Limit the amount of travel bugs?

Recommended Posts

I want to throw this out to see what you guys think. I have noticed a lot of new travel bugs being put out in my area. In fact, my area is saturated with them.

I look at a travel bug as an "Elite" sort of item. Its something that a lot of people look for. It's something special and with a purpose.

My question is, are there too many? Within the last month I could have gone to almost any of the caches within 20 miles of my home (There are 18 of them) and picked up a travel bug or two.

I would like to see the travel bugs gain an actual "Elite" status. This wouldn't be too difficult to do. There could be a ratio of caches to bugs put in place. Say a 30:1 ratio. Whenever 30 new caches are registered the powers that be could make available 1 TB tag. This would liimit the availability of travel bugs and make finding them more special.

For those that say "There are enough rules," this isn't a rule of what can be put in a cache, it's just a limitation on travel bugs.

Just a thought. Let me know what you think.

Okay, you only have 7 finds, so in my sleep deprived haze, I'll try very hard not to sound mean. It's good you are asking questions.

We don't like your suggestion.

Maybe you feel you have a saturation of TB's, but we don't. Or maybe we just have so many cachers that I just can't get any of them. It's still a big deal to us if we find one.

You can certainly get creative in trying to limit TB's. Perhaps TB's should be limited to certain areas only. Or limited by how many cachers are in the area. But then how would you enforce that? And if there's too many TB's in an area, who would be the TB police?

If you don't like how common they are in your area, then don't get them. Leave the travel bugs for those who enjoy them. Look for real treasures such as a geocoin or signature items.

Now these are elite items. We only have one of each.

I hope you aren't offended by what I said or how I said it. I am really sleep deprived and not phrasing sentences too well.

I found it the source of an exquisite pleasure.

If someone spent the $$ to have a travel bug and placed it in an area, that's their right to do so.

If you have too many, you can send them out this way. We don't have a whole lot of them and I enjoy finding them as much as grabbing up signature items that I don't already have.

Sorry, wrong choice of words. How about "rare"

If you don't like TBs, ignore them.

In an area where you've been to all the caches, a TB gives you a reason to revisit a few of them.

I never said I don't like travel bugs. They are just very common in my area.

Let me correct you. I only have 7 logged finds.

Now that you brought that up, I'll give you an example of what I mean. Of those 7 that I have logged, there was a bug(s) in 5 of them. I would consider that quite a few bugs. I did not target those 5 specifically for the bugs. I have moved a couple of those bugs and left some for others to move.

You are taking my idea a little further than I anticipated. You talk of limiting a TBs ability to move. I am not talking about limiting their movements, just their numbers.

I have an issue with new rules being proposed because of one persons opinion, and a very localized condition.

Imposing a limitation on everyone in the world due to TB over saturation in one area is very unreasonable.

I think you should take some initiative and contact all the cachers in your area. Request that no more TBs be activated until they meet your expected ratio. However I doubt you will receive positive responses.

I am not proposing anything. I just threw out an idea to get peoples thoughts.

If you have an issue with rules being made from one individuals ideas you must have an issue with a lot of the laws we must follow.

There may be a saturation of travel bugs in my area. That is why I asked for others input, to see if it was something specific to my area. Hopefully some of the travel bugs in my area will move on to other parts of the world and you guys will be able to find them.

Yes there are many laws proposed by Socialist-liberal-NeoCommies that I disagree with. Our country goes down the crapper the more these rules and laws are passed.

I have a well worn soap box.

So you want to tell my 8 year old daughter that she can't send out a new TB "sully", (sorry too late,he left yesterday), after she has hiked to all but five of my logs, sat in the back seat on the drive to the areas, as me and Limpy sort through the cache, and then walk all the way back to the car?

Now she is tracking the bug on line and haveing fun with it, which to her is the funnest part of the whole deal.

She has also made a school project out of tracking the bug across country. Which in turn gets other kids and parents interested in the sport. What more could you ask for? Sounds like good advertisement for the sport to me and it gets her out doing things other than sitting infront of the television being a couch potato!

If you would like to make some soft of an elite bug, item, whatnot, I think that would be a novel idea. Maybe you could limit how far he could travel in a week, how many caches he could visit in a given time-frame, you get the idea.

But as for limiting how many travel bugs can be placed in one area, I think that is a bit unrealistic and unfair to those that have paid the money for the TB's.

My particular neighborhood is saturated with Volkswagon Bugs at the moment. I don't particularly care for them, but I don't think my neighborhood would accept a limitation on what kind of car they could buy or drive. It's just unrealistic.

My street has been saturated by people with rocks in their yards (something called xeriscaping). There should be a limit on the number of rocks you can collect around your house. How about only 1 rock (of any size) per tree?

I just checked the closest 100 caches to your most recent find (a 40-mile radius). Only 8 of those have TB's in them. That sure doesn't look like saturation to me!

I'd say there are actually too few. If you have lots in your area, you must just be lucky icon_wink.gif. If you don't like moving them, or whatever, then either don't visit the (easy?) caches where they are or just ignore them. Some areas have lots of virutals, or micros or [insert too many whatevers here], and people (that don't like them) in those areas just ignore them... right?

If you don't like having so many TB's in your area then how about grabbing some of them and sending them to me. I'll gladly spread them around my area. Part of the joy of geocaching for me is hunting down TB's and moving them along. I love to track their journey. I also love to see the theme of the bugs and why their owner released them and where they want them to go.

sorry dude, the sympathy is just not out here. In my neck of the woods, I consider it a rare occurrence to catch a travel bug. Its not unrealistic to make a special trip to a cache to get one, and its gone already. Someone else beat ya by 2 hours. I have to echo the others, ignore them or send them along this way.

Two roads diverged in the woods and I,

I took the one less traveled,

and that is how I found the cache.

ToddJ,

Do you ever get the feeling that you're all alone out there? That it seems like everyone thinks you're wrong? This looks like one of those times!

I don't know where you got the idea that travel bugs should be rare/elite/whatever, it's just something else to do while geocaching. It's fun and interesting to see where bugs have been, and to watch your bug travel across country. While individual bugs are unique, bugs as a whole aren't. And they shouldn't be.

Add me to the list of geocachers that you can send travel bugs to if there are too many in your area. I have lots of fun with them. Check the logs on the bugs I have found.

Someone doesn't like locationless, so they should be banned.

Someone doesn't like virtuals, so they should be banned.

Someone doesn't like travel bugs, so they should be limited.

If you don't like part of the game, don't play that part! But please leave it for those who do!

Can't we all just get along???
