+PassingWind
For those you who are really into stats/numbers I ran across this cool little program http://www.fizzymagic.net/Geocaching/FindStats/index.html Quote: "FindStats is a utility that performs some simple statistical analysis of geocaches in a GPX file. It was originally meant for analysis of the "My Finds" Pocket Query, but it works on any GPX file. FindStats calculates the average difficulty, terrain, and "challenge" ratings for caches in a file, along with determining the number of countries and US states represented by the caches in the file." This is what is spit out for me: Analysis of file 354200.gpx 600 unique caches. 600 finds logged. 3 DNF logs (on found caches only). Avg. Difficulty = 1.64 Avg. Terrain = 1.76 Avg. Challenge = 1.98 118 hard caches (20%) 5 countries 3 US states 0 multiple finds (0%) 32 (5.3%) archived First log: 05/7/2005 Last log: 01/10/2006 Most finds: 40 on 12/22/2005 Oldest cache: #459 (GC1CB) Newest cache: #326078 (GCRQ3J) Difficulty: 1.0: 229 (38.2%) 1.5: 178 (29.7%) 2.0: 109 (18.2%) 2.5: 30 ( 5.0%) 3.0: 26 ( 4.3%) 3.5: 8 ( 1.3%) 4.0: 11 ( 1.8%) 4.5: 5 ( 0.8%) 5.0: 4 ( 0.7%) Terrain: 1.0: 242 (40.3%) 1.5: 132 (22.0%) 2.0: 93 (15.5%) 2.5: 44 ( 7.3%) 3.0: 33 ( 5.5%) 3.5: 22 ( 3.7%) 4.0: 22 ( 3.7%) 4.5: 4 ( 0.7%) 5.0: 8 ( 1.3%) Cache types: 2 ( 0.3%) Cache In Trash Out Event 2 ( 0.3%) Earthcache 6 ( 1.0%) Event Cache 1 ( 0.2%) Letterbox Hybrid 16 ( 2.7%) Locationless (Reverse) Cache 16 ( 2.7%) Multi-cache 497 (82.8%) Traditional Cache 25 ( 4.2%) Unknown Cache 31 ( 5.2%) Virtual Cache 4 ( 0.7%) Webcam Cache Containers: 5 ( 0.8%) Large 157 (26.2%) Micro 37 ( 6.2%) Not chosen 18 ( 3.0%) Other 204 (34.0%) Regular 137 (22.8%) Small 42 ( 7.0%) Virtual Countries: 2 in Germany 8 in Mexico 1 in Netherlands 1 in Sweden 572 in United States US States: 545 in California 1 in Maine 26 in Nevada Multiple Finds: Enjoy! Of course I cannot confirm that the following information pertains to Bikedog and so please know that the following comments are mere speculation. The reason I was at Scripps Memorial hospital was that my sweet bride and I took my ninety-two year old dad into the emergency/trauma unit this morning. We arrived at about 9:00 p.m. and stayed until my dad was taken to a room upstairs at about 7:00 p.m. We spent the entire day in the emergeny unit because, in part, the Scripps staff were preoccupied with an injured man that was brought in by helicopter. We sat in the emergency-unit waiting room beside a group of concerned family members and saw more of them arrive in a state of extreme anguish. We also saw the Scripps helicopter arrive with a man that they took straight-away into the trauma unit. We saw that some of the patient's clothing was torn away. As time went on we overheard a remark that the attending neurosurgeons didn't expect the patient to live and of course heard reactions from disdraught family members. It was a very sad and emotional scene. The Scripps staff were working diligently to pull him through. Harmon Edited January 13, 2006 by SD Rowdies Quote Link to comment

Harmon Harmon, you are correct. He was life flighted to Scripps La Jolla and was in the ER/Trauma room most of the day. He never regained consciousness. Between friends and family he had a throng of supporters by his bedside, in the lobby, and the ICU visitors lounge. The only good in this is that it was over in a blink of the eye, no pain, and he went out doing one of things he loved doing the most. Doug Dittrich (aka Howling Wolf) Quote Link to comment

+Cornerstone4
Jerry will alway's be in our minds and hearts..... Thursday, January 12, 2006 Last modified Thursday, January 12, 2006 11:29 PM PST Escondido man killed in crash By: Associated Press I noticed the article listed he is survived by his wife. In his profile, I saw some pictures of children. Does anyone know if Jerry had kids? The reason I am asking is I was contacted yesterday by one of the coin manufacturers. They are sending me 2 samples of their new coin, that are not numbered, and limited to 5 or 6 made. They asked me to auction 1 of them to a charity of my choice, and keep the other. I have found a Bikedog smashed penny, and I know he competed in the coin quest. I want to auction off the coin to benefit his family, but I just wanted to get some more info for the listing. His friends and family will continue to be in our prayers. Dave Quote Link to comment

+Cornerstone4
Doug just informed me that Jerry also left behind a 13-year-old daughter. That breaks my heart. I will be auctioning off that limited coin when it arrives next week to help with a trust fund for his daughter. Quote Link to comment

This is such a tragic loss. Our hearts go out to those that Jerry left behind. I was about ready to place my first cache here in Colorado and I have decided to make it a memorial cache for our geocaching friend Bikedog. I will post a link once it is online so when you SD folks come to visit here, you can do the cache. RM Quote Link to comment

+Silver Horde
I am so sad at reading this. Bikedog (and Howling Wolf) were some of the first cachers Simon and I met while out caching when we first started. He always had time to stop and have chat at campouts and other events. We will miss him. Jane Quote Link to comment
+Team Geogeeks
I don't think we ever met Bikedog, but we have read his posts and seen his name in geocache logs that we've visited. Just reading these posts and seeing the pictures breaks my heart. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Quote Link to comment
+$kimmer
Sad news indeed. Perhaps we can learn something from this tragedy. The gentleman who hit Bikedog was going slowly, looking for an address, turned in from of him. Does this sound familiar? Can't tell you the number of times I have been distracted by the GPSr, looking for the access to a cache. Lets all be more careful while on the hunt,,,,in memory of Bikedog. Quote Link to comment

+PassingWind
Some of you may or may not have seen bikedog's smashed pennies that he began placing into caches. Based on my communications with him he was very passionate about it and couldn't wait to begin placing them into caches. Below is a link to a video compilation that Jerry sent me awhile back showing his true passion for geocaching and creating one of his signature items. Jerry said: "This is a day in the life of an elongated coin. Sure, I know, not as flashy as a geocoin. Not as heavy, nor expensive, either. It's small enough that even those dadgum urban micro's still get a donation. I've stamped a unique tracking number into the first batch. Follow its travels with Google Earth maps." +Let's Look Over Thayer
I'm just finishing up a series of 6 Bikedog Memorial Cards. Such a tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.... So often in our logs, we will write something like "If it weren't for this cache, I never would have known about this place...". This morning, as I read the sad news, I realized that geocaching had brought me to a very unexpected place. I found myself caring, on a deeply personal level, for someone whom I have never met, except through the media of a plastic jar left under a bush, a smashed penny and words in a log. It's rather funny how such small things can create such a connection. Our deepest sympathies go to Bikedog's family and friends. Quote Link to comment

As a long time rider I can't count the number times I've had people turn in front of me, pull out in front of me, or try and move into my lane of traffic, I was even rear ended one time on Ingraham st which isn't any fun at 35 miles an hour. for some reason bikes whether they be pedal or motor people just don't see us. They will look right at us and you wonder if they even see you. So PLEASE PLEASE see us Quote Link to comment

+Team PodCacher
Bikedog down. I am extremely sad to report that Bikedog was critically injured in a motorcycle accident today and will not live through the night. For all of you who had the opportunity to know him, then your life is better for it. I personally had the chance to share many a weekend adventure with him and I will always remember him for the fun we had and the challenges we overcame. I will repost once the details of a memorial service are assembled. Howling Wolf We are so sorry to hear this. It's always difficult when one of our own goes down.
