I picked up a copy of the June 23rd issue of CityBeat, and on page 10 there is an article about geocaching. Kawikaturn took the reporter to find the Pitcher Plant cache in La Jolla. Aside from the reporter commenting that the beat-up cache container looked like garbage, it's a positive article. It's online at the CityBeat website.

It also reveals the identity of our prizewinning collector of personalized swag... NCad! (I thought the descriptive sheet said he'd only been caching for a year or so?!)

Hey Kite and Hawkeye. If you get a chance, please grab an extra copy of that rag. Kawikaturn has been looking for a hardcopy. Thanks, RM

Skeleton Cache near the San Luis Rey Mission has been archived for a while, though the maintainer put in a replacement cache box. Within it is Calypso Crab which I'd really like to see continue it's journey. If someone feels the urge to go over and pick it up, that would be wonderful. I'm not really going to be in that area for a while, and am trying to avoid making a special trip. (The info that I downloaded didn't have it archived at the time, and the box was brand new when I went there.)

Thanks!

hehehee, sounds like fun.

OCBTracker, geesh, I missed the pow wows. We used to go to all the local ones, my husband Gourd Dances when we do. Haven't been in awhile.

We were actually thinking about going out toward where your bug is, so we might be able to give it a lift on Saturday.

If it wasn't such a late powwow, I'd go pick it up myself this weekend -- we'll be over at Pechanga Casino and Resort for their annual powwow (Friday, Saturday and Sunday.) As vendors, we usually don't get out until nearly eleven each night and have to be open before eleven in the morning, so it doesn't allow us much time to get out to do caching. (sigh)

'course Gourd Dancing starts at 11am, I think.

Howdy Folks -

I'm still here - just been too busy with other stuff to get much caching done lately. Had a question though - I used to receive new cache notifications from someone who had an automated notification system, but it's been many moons since I received them and I've changed computers since then and don't have any record of who had been sending them. Is this still going on and, if so, can someone provide me with the contact to get back on the list? Thanks much - and when are we gonna do another campout?

Peace,

"......., the cache placements follow the letter of the geocaching rules, but not the spirit.

I would like to recommend that we make San Diego County a power caching trail free zone. Let's put a moratorium on extreme cache placements. I'm not talking about 3 caches in 5 miles. I'm talking about 25 caches in three miles. As you may notice, I do a lot of caching. It  gives me a sense of accomplishment to have found the caches I have logged. However, it's a personal goal, not a sense that I'm competing with any of you. Some of you have many cache finds less than me, but many of them may have been much more difficult.

If someone wants to place a dense geocache trail, I can't and won't prevent them, but I'm vowing right here to never do it myself."

Parsa

I tried to get a committee together in order to approach SDRP about their geocaching policy. I suggested that we consider the thought of organizing a "San Diego Geocachers" group. That idea was soundly flogged. Most geocaching participants just want to geocache. Most of us are astounded when we find out that a particular area is declared a non-geocaching area. We have a tiny bit of trouble following established rules. Be still my heart, do we really need to make a pact about the density of cache placements in San Diego County? Participants in geocaching are as different as fingerprints. What works for one doesn't work for another. There are parents and grandparents who might have a peaceful afternoon if there were trails with geocaches every 580 feet. Not everyone is in excellent health or as competitive as some of our "Power Cachers".

Kawikaturn gave me some excellent advice when I was in a flap over SDRP policy. I didn't write down his exact words, but the point he was making is this, "If the cache is there, go for it. If it isn't, go for another one. This is supposed to be a fun activity." It took a few weeks, but the message sunk in. David Hekel, SDRP ranger and also climberx, did an enormous amount of work in getting geocaches allowed within SDRP. Thank you, David. I was about ready to vaporize and help stepped in from the most unlikely source.

Geocaching is a very personal, but public experience. We need to be aware that the quantity of our finds equals experience, competence, and influence. That amounts to responsibility for our own cache placements, logs, and posts.

Power trails are there for all sorts of reasons. The spirit and essence of geocaching changes by the minute. I have a mind of my own and go geocaching when and where possible. Sometimes I don't visit caches if I find the cache owner to be irritating. And I have a certain amount of rebel in me that is aching to place those 25 caches in 3 miles. Anyone want to help? Who knows?.......Clyde Crashcup might be logging Power Trails.

Do we really need Gurus and Groupies in Geocaching?

Hi CorysMom!!! I'd help, *wave* But only if you could find the Perfect area for it (like that Palm Springs one!) hehehhehehee, and the hides could be fun and clever camo ones. :D

Corysmom is a very nice lady, and I really like what she says above. It might irk me sometimes, if an area just seems too dense with caches, but c'est la vie. Others will enjoy it, especially some of the little ones. I could care less about numbers, so who cares if someone uses it to up their find count. People posting their find count in logs probably irritates me more than power cache trails. I mean really, what is that all about?

Had a great time up in Bonsall today, just the right amount of hills combined with easier hikes. ;)

Namaste ;)

Hi OCBTracker et.al. I am sorry to say that we went looking for this today, only to come up empty. Pretty sure we were dead on, as we saw a likely pile of sticks and grass (oh so neatly placed) But, there was nothing underneath...

It looks like it might have been mowed, and there evidence of some drinking happening recently.

;)

ps. so sorry for the back to back postings, but I didn't want to mix them together.

I'm taking a middle-ground approach here. I think saturation will work well in parks (Kit Carson, Felicita, Balboa, etc...) which contain numerous points of interest "justifying" a cache.

I think hiking parks (Tecolote, Mission Trails, SDRP, etc...) should remain saturation-free for the reasons Parsa noted.

We will be visiting/caching in the San Diego Area for the next few days. I was looking for some stuff to do while we're there (I know there's plenty...) Wondering if kayaking to the sea caves is as good as the websites make it out to be. Is it worth the trip?

Stuff to do...San Diego has plenty 'o that. Here's a Markwell on a previous request. I can't speak about kayaking in the caves but they are pretty cool to explore on foot and I hear you can paddle into them if the tides are right.

SD things to do? Sea World is over rated in my book but there's no beating the SD Zoo. Other to do's include Econdido's Wild Animal Park (breeding grounds for the zoo), Balboa Park, the Gas Lamp quarter downtown, La Jolla tidepools and the Scrips Aquarium. These are place we try and take outta-towners to.

Enjoy your visit and spend lots of money. We depend on the tourist dollars. :P

Sea World is fun to see, if you haven't seen something like that yet. I don't know what they have in NJ. There is the Old Town Trolley (bus) that some friends said was well worth the money. Very informative & fun. I'm not sure, but I think the Grey Lines Co. operates them. (The company that has the tour buses in all major cities, like NY, only better out here.) La Jolla Shores is a nice beach area. Then there is Black's Beach (clothing optional). Above it is the glider port in Torrey Pines. We have horse races in Del Mar that starts soon. You just missed our Fair. Lets not forget The Del - Del Coronado Hotel. We also have the Missions, built by the Padres (church, not baseball). We have a Maritime museum that has several ships open for tour, including two sail ships and the USS Midway aircraft carrier. The Navy quite often has a ship or two close by on weekends for tour. Then you can zip across the border into Mexico to see the sights there. Just watch what you drink and your wallet. Don't want to get a visit from Montezuma. :(

Hope you have fun while you are here.

Does anyone know Sculture? (S)he placed the GC32E9 San Pascual Overlook out past the Wild Animal Park. Since the cache is inside the SDRP, the ranger has removed it till it goes through the proper approval process, which is pretty painless. Sculture hasn't responded to an email or the note in the cache log.

I'd love to see this cache back up and running. I really don't want to see it archived so I suppose I could try and adopt it.

Anyone?

Two consecutive posts! Am I breaking a rule here?

Last call for the 3rd Annual SoCal Crush Picnic in Arcadia. Yeah, its a drive but there will be Geocaching and food! It looks like San Diego will be represented by myself, Team Reid, Padre Girl and Vagabond.

I've also hidden a signature Dan-oh cache in the park that will be released tomorrow morning. Come and get it!

Anyone else?

Beller?

Anyone?

Hi Dan-oh,

Adopting the 'San Pasqual Overlook' cache sounds like a great idea. I visited the Ranger's Headquarters several months ago and took inventory of all the caches that had been removed. Jason, the Head Ranger, was adamant about not releasing any caches to anyone but the owners. He didn't want to fine anyone or worse, arrest anyone. He wanted to be able to explain why, at that time, geocaching was not permitted. There may be a few more caches that could also be subject to adoption by an active geocacher. This should be a positive interaction with those guys. You might want to call or e-mail before you visit.....when I was there they were planning on putting all the cache containers up in the attic sometime during the month of May.

The hike to 'San Pasqual Overlook' is fun and so many interesting things to look at. Hikes to geocaches have become shorter. That's fine with me. But doing these longer ones that gain some altitude and show off great views are morale boosters.

Get those adoption papers ready. At the worst, you'll just have to rename it. Then we will all have an excuse to climb up there again.

Hey everyone!

We haven't been geocaching or posting for a while. We both got promotions at work, and have been working many many many hours. So HELLO AGAIN!! We're back! (Don't be scared! :D ) Anyhow, we made it out to the San Diego Fair last week and saw the geocaching hobby show entry that won first place!!! Great Job! Who made the display anyhow? We are hoping to get back out there a lot this summer. I am happy that there are 2 caches since our hiatus within 1 mile of us! Geocaches here we come!

Another shameless plug from Dan-oh for a new cache. Bump GCJXND has been approved and is the most recent cache inside the SDRP. Its a short multi overlooking the San Pascual Valley and is great for a sunset walk. Have fun!

Saturday had me up in Arcadia for the SoCal Geocachers picnic. I got a chance to meet SoCal Admin, WestCoast Admin, FishPoet, BarbiQ62 and so many other great cachers. We hit 5 or 6 caches released for the event, including my 'Marco Polo' cache. I think I did a good job of spreading the non-lame micro gospel to Los Angeles county. Be sure to read a few of the logs and get their take on it.

Okay, newbie question. (Just how many finds do you have to have to not qualify as a newbie?) We've been geocaching for about a month now (and have over 50 finds) and we have never met any of you out there on the road. We've followed quite a few of you judging from the log book entries, but never have actually met anyone.

And how does one meet or join the San Diego group? I've clicked on the San Diego Geocachers web site (from someone's cache site) and got an error message.

We live in Jamul and are moving to the Temecula area so I guess we really wouldn't qualify as San Dieagn's anymore but we've been in SD for seven years so will anyways.

And has anyone ever really met TucsonThompson? Or do you, like us, have a masochist tendency?

Nuf ??? for now, oh and hello!

That link may have been from one of my cache pages. That link used to take you here, so you found it anyway. I have been ultra lazy and haven't gotten around to fixing those links yet. They have only been broken for about 6 months, sheesh!!!!!! But...This is us. This thread is about as good as it gets besides the get togethers that seems to happen every 6 months or so. Keep your eyes here, to find out more, I think one is in the works...Devhead? Dillons?

In the meantime, the best way to run into sombody on the trail is to hit the newest caches out there.

As far as being a newbie: You will no longer be a newbie when you no longer feel like one. Sometimes I find myself wandering around looking for a trailhead or a cache and wonder when I will ever get the hang of this stuff.

ARE we having an event next weekend? I remember the 18th was mentioned awhile ago. Anyone? FERRIS??

And has anyone ever really met TucsonThompsen?

Yes....I exist. In no particular order, I have met on the trail:

HelBobDuo (twice), The Senior Sleuths

bd_chris....(helped patch up his kid yesterday after the boy took a rock to the head from his brother.)

FlagMan, padregirl, TeamTaskmaster, ClimberX & norbu, Miles678, The4Deez

Duscwe! ,John & Jess... and probably a few others who I am forgetting.

It's always a pleasure to meet people on the trail and chat for a bit.

Tucson Thompsen does exist.

He was created in a lab by demented scientists. His caching and puzzling cruelty is matched only by his sheer determination and diabolical fiendishness. His chief weapons are fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope. (No, wait ... that's the Spanish Inquisition. No one expects them.)

In reality, TucsonThompsen was created by my parents, so I shouldn't be that hard on him, except to say that he has way too much free time on his hands and a flexible schedule (which I envy) which allows him odd times to geocache and get first finds.

Dan-oh, on the other hand, probably exists, but can never be seen by cachers due to his excellent camouflage.

Oh really? I don't know many people who would travel from Pima AZ to SD to be the FTF a cache. Even if it did belong to a sibling. That would never happen in my DHs family of 11 sibs.

Granted, I am a newbie here and probably do not fully understand what drives every cacher (although I'm beginning to understand as we borrowed a neighbors ladder to find Sandy Creek Cowboy Cache No. 3 yesterday).

Well good! I was hoping that was the case. We did the Lawson Valley (1,2,3 & 4) a couple of weeks ago and on our way down another couple was going up. We said hello (assuming they were geocachers) and the guy said Geo what? The girl never said a word. I was going to be sad if all the hikers we met behaved like that. ;)

We shouldn't be that hard to spot though. We really do drive a blue suburban (although somewhat newer than the one on out user page). It's the one with all the bumper stickers on the rear window. And we (or sometimes just me) will always be accompanied by our kids. And the big dog of course.

My DH tells me we need to watch for the new caches to meet any of you so we'll hope to see you on the trail! B)

Jeez, even I wouldn't travel 400+ miles solely for a first find. (50 miles, maybe ^_^ )

But I do vastly prefer San Diego to Tucson for 4th of July, which is why I planned the trip in the first place. The possibility of an FTF was nice. Didn't happen. C'est la vie.

I signed on to remind everyone what a gorgeous city/county we live in and what a great geocaching community we have. This has been highlighted for me by our current trip to New York City. Geocaching is, to use a gentle term, undeveloped here. It's mostly 1/1 kind of stuff, and a lot of those turn up as DNF on a regular basis, but that's no surprise. In general, though, the caches are uninspired.

While we are not cache makers ourselves, we truly appreciate all the willing and clever souls who design, plant, and maintain the bounty of geocaching opportunities in the SD area. I don't know if TT, Dan-oh, and The Cow Spots are three different people or not , but I have a great respect for their work, and I encourage them to keep it coming. Bottom line: I'd rather do a 1/1 in the SDRP than Times Square any day of the week.

Looking forward to returning....

Well, I'm still alive... though my ribs *still* hurt. I went out with dhsundance a couple times, and one day I got over 25 caches, mostly by driving to them. Hehe. Some of those Cowboy caches near the I-8 are classic, especially that Altoids one. I just about laughed my self to death on that one. I've had some up and down days, and one "give me the Motrin again" day.

I'm not trying to make anyone mad about the power caching thing BTW, it's just if someone placed a zillion caches on a trail, that pretty much screws it for anyone else who would like to place one there too...

I hope I can make it to the picnic and see everyone again.

Gee, Parsa, does it really matter if someone else wants to put out a cache? You did a good job of bashing my new cache that you visited with dhsundance. Your rating sytem gave me a zero. We had e-mail correspondence. I went to the dump. You changed your log. I'm not taking it so personally now because I read your logs for the other caches. What was it? Something about visiting "four placed-just-for-the-hell-of-it caches". Another left you wondering why anyone would put a cache "there".

There are a lot of new geocachers who read your cache-bashing logs. You have a ton of caches under your belt. Some people may count you as some sort of authority. Your logs suggest that everyone who places a cache should maintain a certain criteria.

Maybe there doesn't have to be a view, an historical site, or interesting drive in order for a cache to have a few redeeming qualities. Maybe someone put a cache out because they simply wanted to place a cache. Gosh, what an unusual idea.

The next cache I place will have a cache page that includes the following:

ATTENTION, Parsa. This cache may not be up to your standards.
