rockbuilder
How do I ask a reviewer a question? I am working on getting my BSA Woodbadge. One of the "ticket" items or projects that I voluteered for was to place some geocaches at local eagle scout projects. The idea was to promote awareness of some of the great outdoor projects eagle scouts have done for the local community. Now after doing a lot more research about geocaching I am worried the reviewers will reject these caches after I place them as "promotional". Can anyone give me an opinion or some insight about this??? Quote Link to comment

+Shop99er
There are a lot of Eagle Scout Project Caches out there. I can't imagine a Reviewer not publishing one if the regular guidelines are met. Quote Link to comment

While it's easy to think "commercial" when you hear "promotion", eagle scout projects are almost never commercial. Quote Link to comment
+TeamRabbitRun
I don't think the OP's asking about Eagle Scout projects; I think he's worried that he's committed to placing caches that say something like: "Come to this cache! See the bench it's under? This bench was put here by a prospective Eagle Scout doing his required Community Service project! Have a seat and recognize/celebrate the contribution of this fine young man and his service to the community!" ...and he's worried that this could be perceived as 'promoting an agenda', namely, the Boy Scouts of America, an outside organization. Does that sum it up, rockbuilder? ---------------------- Work with your local Reviewer in advance of doing anything; that's my best advice. Quote Link to comment
+GC Parrotheads
Take a look at any geocache near you. Scroll down to the bottom of the list of logs. The one on the bottom will be from a reviewer. Click their name, send them a message and start a dialog directly with one of your local reviewers. I think the direct approach will work wonders here. Quote Link to comment
+speakers-corner
Also have a look at this site, it might be of help to you. http://geoscouting.com/cache2eagle.html Quote Link to comment
+Isonzo Karst
A note that the site that speakers-corner links is NOT a BSA site, it's a private commercial site that sprang up at the time of the 100 Years anniversary with its Geocaching tie-in (Get in the Game! and BSA themed geocaches) to sell BSA related stuff. The "guidelines" there are not from BSA, and are not from Geocaching.com either. I recommend NOT following too long the naming convention. Quote Link to comment
JASTA 11
In our area, one can place a cache with 'Boy Scouts' or 'Girl Scouts' or 'Cache to Eagle' in the name without issue. Mention 'Honoring Veterans' however, then there's an agenda issue. Quote Link to comment
+edscott
I don't see how placing a geocache near an Eagle project promotes BSA any more than placing a cache in a Walmart parking lot promotes Walmart. Just be careful to keep the text free of any promotion. Edited April 2, 2016 by edscott Quote Link to comment
+5Campbells
Great ticket item (I am a Buffalo) This does not violate any of the placement rules that i know of unless the Eagle project was done on private property. A simple story of the boy with his Eagle project would be nice. "This cache was placed by Eagle Scout Johnny B who became Eagle on Fed 24 2015. His project was to make an Olympic sized swimming pool for squirrels" Quote Link to comment

+bflentje
I believe that ANY Eagle project related to geocaching is lame. I'd prefer young scouts use their efforts doing some good for those that need it rather than on a game that is predominantly white middle class. Quote Link to comment

It is a geocache to highlight an Eagle project already completed. At the best, this cache will help a scout work towards their Geocaching Merit Badge. Quote Link to comment

My comment arose from a small handful of scouts in my local area that thought geocaching was more important than actually helping the community. There were several that managed to get their Eagle Projects as 100% geocaching related. Quote Link to comment
+Manville Possum
I believe that ANY Eagle project related to geocaching is lame. I've played around here and on the other geocaching sites enough to think Scout caches are beyond lame and lazy. Constantly the "we need an app for that" is an issue. Really, hide a geocache as an Eagle Scout project? That's nuts. Quote Link to comment

But, what about a project to create a GeoTour for a city tourism bureau? That could show the leadership qualities that an Eagle Scout is supposed to demonstrate with their project. Personally, I don't believe that my example above should qualify as an Eagle Scout project, I'm just playing devil's advocate. To me, an Eagle Scout project should also have a permanence to it, and geocaches are anything but permanent. Quote Link to comment

I had the understanding that the Eagle project should have some permanence to it, geocaching doesn't offer true permanence. Besides, my opinion is that people in true need should be helped. Tourism would not fit that bill. But that's just my opinion so please don't report me if you disagree with it. Quote Link to comment

+Manville Possum
Some of the Eagle Scout Projects on the Waymarking site are interesting. But going out and hiding geocaches and calling it a Scout project is just silly. Quote Link to comment
