  1. Great ticket item (I am a Buffalo) This does not violate any of the placement rules that i know of unless the Eagle project was done on private property. A simple story of the boy with his Eagle project would be nice. "This cache was placed by Eagle Scout Johnny B who became Eagle on Fed 24 2015. His project was to make an Olympic sized swimming pool for squirrels"
  2. This is a new hobby for us, I have owned several GPS units but never used them for geocaching, I have used mine for navigating Lake Norman at night when it is pitch black. With my 3 boys in the Boy Scouts we were introduced to Geocaching basics at a weekend camping event. My 3 boys all showed interest so we decided to take it to the next level. Now half the geocaches we have found are not in the most scenic areas or in any areas with significant meaning. I have seen videos posted on geocaching.com where people place these all over the cities in same boring areas. What is so scenic about putting a geocache in a drain? I am sure some simple park and grabs are near historical buildings and such but most are not. As I learn more, explore more and find better areas and ideas I will be changing it up. I do live in a huge neighborhood that has about 6 different parks. I created a 5 mile walk and grab focused on the younger crowd. 1-2 difficulty level. This has worked well for getting my kids off the x-box and asking to go outdoors for some "caching" Thank you everyone for your feedback! Ed
  3. So I am new to this whole geocaching thing but having a blast. Today was my 7th hide and 14 find. I am sure allot of people use google maps to find the perfect spot without having to drive out. So today I found a nice dead end road, no muggles around to bother it. Nice guardrail hide. Google maps shows me this But you get there and see this. LOL. Keep looking I guess!
  4. Hi General, I just purchased the eTrex 30, it is just like the 30x but with a few less newer options. Both the 30 and 30x support geocaching. Depending on what computer you have and the OS installed on it, you might have a few minor problems connecting your computer to your GOS device and have them talk back and forth. I had zero problems connecting it to my wifes Apple, the auto run feature with the installed software on the GPS auto installed all the programs needed to easily download geocaches to my device. My other PC has Windows Vista. I had to update the firmware, but all the instructions were on Garmins website. Just plug in the USB cable and attach it to your device. Visit www.geocaching.com and log in like you normally have, search for caches, once there find the small link "Send To My GPS" once you click it, it will send the whole cache description, hints and logs to your device. Good luck and have fun.
  5. They have a cache on Disneys Castaway Cay Island. Only way there is if you take a Disney Cruise.
  6. Depending on your phone accuracy plays in. My hand held unit can get within 8 feet. Phone about 20-30
  7. For the past 15 years I have owned 2 GPS units that I used for marking fishing spots on the lake. It was not until my 3 boys all got active in the Boy Scouts and were introduced to Geocaching at a BSA event they attended. The next week we decided to try it out. My Garmin GPSmap 76csx did have a geocache option. It did take a while for my computer (using Vista) to update with the latest firmware for the systems to talk back and forth. Last Saturday I told the boys we were going out to look for some caches, it was a little tough to pull them off their xBox after all the games they got for Xmas. So we headed out and we found 7 out of 10 caches. My boys loved it. Sunday my boys came to me and asked to do it again. I was shocked and almost a tear came to my eyes. Going outside vs xBox? We did not pay for an account here. Some cache hiders will only release coordinates to paying members, but others do allow it. These were the ones we found. So it depends on what cache you hunt. Also it takes a little patience setting up the unit to talk to your PC. Don't give up, it is a ton of fun!
