I have updated Geocaching Intro App today and now I see only 1 near cache ( although yesterday previos version of app showed me 3 caches from the same place ). Is there some distance limit in new searching algorithm, that can explain this behavior ?

Moreover, today I have found my 3rd cache, counter on www.geocaching.com is updated correctly, but iphone app shows only 2 caches found.

What I am doing wrong ? Is there any way to refresh status ?

Like the new UI on the Intro App.

Is there going to be a similar update to the Full paid App??

After using the free intro successfully for several months, yesterday I installed the "upgrade" to the free app. My iphone is now completely useless for geocaching. All caches are locked (not accessible) except 3 or 4 the app chooses. I have found most of the caches within 15 miles of my home, and after trying to use the app off and on all day yesterday, I have been unable to get it to choose anything except (1) caches I have already found, or (2) my own caches. I can find no way for me to choose which cache I want to search for. So unless I go far enough from home to get to an area where I haven't found anything, it is USELESS. If there is any way to go back to the previous version of the app, I would gladly do it. Any help out there?

I have to agree with T89SM, I have recently started Geocaching and was absolutely loving it until the Intro App was changed.

I understand that these things cost money to make but I imagine that alot of future Geocacher's will now be lost because of this. As T89SM states all the Caches are locked so the app really is completely useless.

There seriously needs to be a way to roll back to the previous version of the app. I don't understand why cache's are locked on the app but on the website they are unlocked.

I agree, I use geocaching with my students and not being able to select which geocaches my students shall hunt are very annoying and must now stop geocachingen. As the only teacher I have to control where students may be, traffic and other hazardous environments!

Well... as the title suggests, this is an Intro app.

My suspicion would be that Groundspeak is hoping that folks would ween off the Intro App and purchase the full app.

...at least if'n I were in this business, that is what I would want. It is a business, after all...

As Gitchee-Gummee has indicated, this is an intro app designed for people just learning about the game. If you have been caching for a while, you might be ready to move on to another app (or a GPS).

That said, we are listening to all of the feedback and discussing changes to make to the intro app that make it more fun and useful to those who install it. FYI, you are not being restricted from caches that the previous version of the app used to show you; rather, the new version shows you what you were missing before (they show as locked, however). The three caches you are given are chosen using an algorithm designed to make the hunt most successful and satisfying for new users: larger caches with a relatively high number of Favorite points that have been successfully found recently.

I remember finding 3 geocaches within a mile of my home with the old app and now the closest one to me that's unlocked is 5 miles away but the one's I've found nearest my home are locked. Could that be a glitch of the new app?

It's not really a glitch, per se; the old app showed the three closest that fit the criteria (no "Needs Maintenance" icon, found recently, larger size, etc.), while the new app tries to choose the "best" caches nearby by also factoring in Favorite points.

The team is working on a change that will give you access to all caches you have found or hidden. They are also discussing the possibility of allowing the app to switch between "best" caches and "nearest" caches (which will take more complicated coding, so won't be ready as quickly).

Could the app be changed to force people to actually write something in the log field ? As a CO, the auto-generated "I found this geocache using the Geocaching Intro App. TFTC!" is as bad, or worse than just "TFTC". It's all very well to encourage hordes of new users, but could they be encouraged (if not forced) to do the right thing by the owners of the caches they find ?

I agree. I was at the fire station yesterday evening when two young ladies showed up looking for my cache there. It was only their second cache and they were using the free intro app. I let them search for it themselves (with a couple of hot/cold hints to help out) and then chatted with them a bit after they found it. Then later on when I read their cache log it was the default "I found this geocache using the Geocaching Intro App. TFTC!" I think an experience like actually bumping into the CO at the cache site would deserve some mention in the log, wouldn't you? But they were new so I guess they haven't got the hang of logging etiquette yet. I also noticed when I checked out their profile that they had never visited the site, so their only interaction with Geocaching so far has been through the intro app. I wish if realized that when I was talking to them, I would have tried to give them a little guidance.

My bolding...

That's a big part of the issue I think. There's an increasing number of phone-only cachers who have no interaction with the site and probably never read the email newsletter, so no way of picking up the etiquette. Really, the app should pop up a message box every time the default text isn't changed, suggesting that something more is desirable.

Reading the later posts... I would agree that the intro app may well be a (good) candidate for a proverbial "nag screen".

Ya gotta admit that having a new hoard of "invalidated" cachers is not a good thing...

It's good to have new players join the game, but they should be encouraged to follow the conventions and etiquette of "good caching". Since this app is an intro, then I reckon it's a perfect way to introduce some of the polite conventions that make the game more pleasant and rewarding for both other finders and for hiders. So educating them that "[:)], "TFTC", "Found it", "Found with joe_blow" or "I found this geocache using the Geocaching Intro App. TFTC!" are not really useful logs would b great. So would teaching them how to grab/log/drop trackables properly, the fact that the cache should always be hidden properly and that you shouldn't trample vegetation.

These are all things that people acquire as they cache for a while, but they can be taught quicker if the intro app provides tips and hints. As with anything, the more you put into the game, the more you get out and if people are just using the auto-generated text, I am sure that after a while, they will just get bored and drift away.

I am just getting back into geocaching after a couple of years and decided to try out the intro app. I really enjoyed it and it prompted me to upgrade to premium. I assumed (maybe incorrectly??) that this would give me the better version of the app (it was the same price.) but it just enabled me to access all of the caches I see on my screen (none are locked) which is not what I intended to do at all. Why would I pay 9.99 to make the intro app slightly better when I could have paid 9.99 for the actual app?? Is this just a glitch? Should I have the real app?? Someone help!! I am so frustrated!

I'm not sure I'm understanding what you're getting at here....there is no way to make the intro app "slightly better", for 9.99 you get the full app.

$30 per year pays for Premium membership, completely regardless of whether you have the intro app, the paid app, some other app, no app, no smart phone at all. The one has nothing to do with the other.

With Premium membership you get many more features in addition to just access to PMO caches. You also get Pocket Queries (a tremendously useful tool!), instant notifications of new caches, Bookmark lists, and a few other nifty features.

The 9.99 official Groundspeak app is not just a slightly improved version of the intro app, it's a slick, well designed, easy to use complete caching tool. It's a completely different app, it looks and functions nothing like the intro app. The intro app is just that, an introduction, just to give the completely uninitiated a taste of what Geocaching is. Once you decide you actually want to pursue this as a hobby, the full app (or one of the other Geocaching apps available) will be much more functional for real caching.

$10 seems a little steep in a world of free and 99 cent apps, but I think it's the best $10 I ever spent.....although I eventually bought a handheld GPS, I still use the app often and I've had a helluva lot of fun for that 10 bucks 😊

I'm still a little confused....what did you spend 9.99 on? If you paid 10 bucks in the App Store you got the full app. If you paid 10 bucks for Premium membership then you got a 3-month membership, because you can pay $10 for 3 months or $30 for a whole year.

Sounds like you need to swipe a few pages back and see where your phone put the new $10 app. It's there. Exit the old intro app. You're done with that.

If all else fails, check the cloud and re-install. If you paid $10 the app is yours

I am having exactly the same problem. Was using the intro app and decided to upgrade. I did this through the intro app thinking it would upgrade. I now have a premium membership for 3 months but still only have the intro app, just with a couple more caches unlocked. (Yes i have done a search for the full app on my phone and double checked the app store - I don't have access to to full app) When I try to download the full app it is asking me to pay the 3 month membership price again.

Can anyone help me? It seems like I have just thrown away my money.

Thanks.

It's not asking you to pay the three month membership again. The app costs $10. It's completely seperate from the Premium membership. Paying for one does not get you the other.

Basically it's $30 per year for an annual Premium membership, or $10 for three months worth of Premium membership. It sounds like you upgraded your membership through the app but are still using the intro app. The full app is $10 (but it's a one-time purchase).

In addition to access to PMO (Premium Member Only) caches, you also get a host of other Premium features, like Pocket Queries, bookmark lists, instant notifications when new caches are published, and a few others. So don't feel like you've wasted your money, Premium membership is a good investment if you plan to get into this at all. But it doesn't include the app upgrade.

Some people complain that it's not fair, that you should get one when you purchase the other, but not everyone needs both. Some folks are satisfied with Basic membership and use the app for all their caching needs, and some folks like the benefits of Premium membership but don't even own a smartphone so have no need for the app.

If I were you, and if $10 is affordable to you, I'd go ahead and purchase the app. It really is nothing like the free app, which is really just an introduction to Geocaching. The full app will give you access to all the hints, pictures, recent logs, trackables, and other cache info you may need in the field (and not limited to just showing you the three closest cavhes) . It's really everything you need. I think you'll be impressed with how functional it is, the experience is nothing like using the free app.

I think that you (as well as the previous poster) confused upgrading your MEMBERSHIP with upgrading the APP.

I think this need to be very clear for people upgrading via the intro app as the price for the 2 are exactly the same, hence the confusion. As an app only user (and I am sure there are lots of new geocaching app only members), when you see a 3 month premium geocaching option you assume that you will get the app upgrade as well - as that is what happens in 99% of cases. If I had purchased a membership via the website, I wouldn't have expected the app upgrade. Personally I didn't need the ability to have a premium membership but wanted the ability to search for caches, access to hints, etc as the full app does. Therefore I feel like I have wasted my money as I didn't get what I expected. I am not a regular geocacher, it's something fun that I do with my kids on holidays and this experience has really put me off.

I haven't used the intro app since I first started over three years ago, so I don't know what it looks like these days. However, it does sound like they don't make it very clear what you're upgrading, your membership or the app. I can see where it would be confusing. And as you said, the fact that a 3-month membership and the app both cost $10 adds to the confusion.

Hi!

I started geocaching in 2011 and got an app (c:geo??) for my phone. It worked just fine. well, now I thought I would try taking this up again and introducing my students to caching as a way to learn about maps and gps systems e.g. Since 2011 i have bought an iPhone and searched for a free app (because that's what i had in 2011) but now I'm thinking that I probably shouldn´t introduce my students to this. 75 SEK (ten bucks)is a lot of money for students for only three months use! Why is the price so high? (from 0 to 75 SEK in two years)

Hi Aigee,

Ten bucks for three Months isn't the app, it's for premium membership.

Maybe this is what's confusing people?...

What's New in this Version If we listed every single thing we upgraded in the newest version of the Geocaching App, you’d be reading for days. We’ve improved pretty much every aspect to make geocaching easier, more fun and did we mention more fun and easier. That being said, here are a few of the highlights:

・ Create an account and log your finds!

・ Upgraded compass and map modes

・ New, easy-to-use geocaching experience

・ Vastly improved algorithm to find the three best geocaches near you

・ More tips and hints for beginners

・ You can upgrade to Geocaching Premium from within the app

・ Bug fixes and more!

- Nothing about purchasing/upgrading to the full app, (seems to me like) it's stating an upgrade towards premium membership.

A new person probably wouldn't know the difference.

They believe they're upgrading the app that they wanted, instead they now have a three-Month PM.

So after that, not only do they have a 3mth Premium Membership that they probably didn't want, and probably didn't intend to buy, but they still don't actually have the app that they did want and did intend to buy. Misleading at best.

No wonder they get frustrated and probably lost to the game.

There was another thread recently about requiring new Geocachers to pass some kind of test to prove that they are really committed to the game. Maybe this is it 😳

Don't buy the premium app. The PQ's don't work and your gonna need these when your out caching. You'll be ok if you can continually access the site but I often find when I'm in the middle of nowhere, I've no signal. This is where PQ's are needed.

PQs work in the full app, but large ones will hit a throttle when it comes to saving them for offline use due to an API issue that will be fixed in the next API update. Until then, you can work around the issue by splitting your large PQs into smaller ones (~250 caches).

Maybe you're right.

Hopefully, the folks who posted contacted Groundspeak and got everything straight, but the wording hasn't changed from the original post.

If I was a new person using the intro app (using a phone...), my first thought would be I'd want to "upgrade" to the full app.

Premium membership would be secondary.

I am also new to geocaching. I used the intro app and then decided to upgrade. The app is very misleading and when you select the upgrade option it directs you to buy a premium membership. I, of course assumed it meant upgrading the app, especially as the price is the same. I can tell you I was pretty pissed off when I worked out what was happening, only by reading these posts. I only realised something was wrong when the app was still only showing the closest three caches. I feel like I have been deliberately mislead into purchasing something I didn't require. I realise it's not a lot of money in the long run for a great time but I really feel ripped off. It's left a bad taste in my mouth and it needs to be rectified.

Maybe if someone directs them to this thread, they'll get an idea of the problem.

- And you guys are just a few grumbling here on the forums.

How many unaware of the forums just gave up and quit?

There's been QUITE a bit of grumbling in the forum about this topic. I'm not sure how they have the upgrade option presented in the intro app but they obviously need to make it a lot more clear.....a lot of new cachers are being misled (not intentionally, I'm sure, but misled nonetheless) and feel ripped off. Seems like something they can address pretty easily and avoid the negative PR.

Hey guys,

Sorry about all the confusion happening with the upgrade through the app. The team that is handling this is aware of the tangle and is working on making things more clear for everyone. :)

As a CO I don't really mind if they don't write anything in the log field; sure, a well written log is nice, but it isn't really necessary. What really bugs me is the Not Validated Members who have never visited the web site, because there is no way of contacting these people to let them know not to write spoiler logs or post spoiler pictures. Surely it would be possible to prevent the posting of logs without email validation. I had to delete 2 spoiler logs from one Intro App user, and they probably don't even know it because they've never even visited the web site.

4 months later and it is still a problem. Very frustrating. This thread is the only thing that explained the problem. Come on people! Maybe the intro app should offer the PM upgrade AND the full version app to help clarify.

Maybe PM shouldn't be an 'in-app' purchase. I realize GS will never turn down the opportunity for money (and why would they if they are receiving great rewards from this mistake?)

But honestly. An intro app user does not need to upgrade to PM. They need to be directed to the main site for this.

Maybe....when they click to upgrade to PM...just maybe it can jump out of the app and over to the website? Then they can decide there if that's what they want.

In app purchases should be just that...an upgrade to the app.

I agree. If they were directed to the main site, they might actually visit the site. Then they might realize that geocaching is more than just a smart phone app. They might even validate their email and become contactable by other cachers and they might learn that there is a whole community involved in this activity.

I was just reading through this thread again and was struck by the comments I bolded above. Maybe since they were so new they didn't realize that it is unusual to bump into the CO at the cache site--maybe they just took it for granted that you were always there.

If I had a nickel for every time I ran into someone identifying themselves as "Chief301" at a cache, I'd be a millionaire!

One thing new cachers should learn is, you can edit the text of cache logs. My first cache find logs were all "TFTC", since that's what I saw on cache logs. I later changed them all, to a better story of each cache. Your iPhone phrase is not set in stone. Text can be added to the log.

 The Intro App is what got me interested again. I've been a member since 2009 but got side tracked with my kids and work. I am back again since a good friend of mine is doing this. As with everyone of my hobbies, they all cost money. I like the app and plan on purchasing the full app next month. The app does limit the # of caches in your area, but I am fine with that until I get fully spooled up on this again. Free is just that, free. You get what you pay for.

Anyway, I am a happy camper and my iPhone is happy too.

Hi All,

I have an iPhone, and have been using the FREE geocaching App with great success.

I'll no doubt buy the full version soon, but was wondering if it lets you enter your own co-ordinates for things like "Unknown" type caches that usually require you to solve a puzzle before getting the cache's actual co-ordinates. By this I mean solve the puzzle/code/cipher etc, and then store the cache's solved co-ordinates in the App for later retrieval.

It would be great to be able to see Traditional, Multi, and also Unknown cache types all on the same map so you can grab them while you're in the area.

With Unknown puzzle type caches, sometimes you solve them weeks/months before you can go looking for them, and by then you've forgotten the area they were in.

If the geocaching App doesn't do this, does anyone know an App that does?

Cheers!

Yep, the full app will do all this. Just make sure when you do upgrade, that you're buying the full app, not upgrading to Premium Membership, which does nothing to the app.

Edit: As for other apps, they are out there, but can't be mentioned here.
