laughin at u all Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 I havent gone out to find a cache yet,im enjoying reading these forums...i have to say,you are all mad. 60 year old potter fans, argueing over names from the books and geeks admitting to being geeks commenting on how they've read every book...people complaining about 'how someone actually went out to BUY a cache'....do you not think its a waste of life? Writing on a piece of paper and putting it into a rock?

For the record, I'm 35, not a Potter fan, and have always been more of a dork than a geek. Oh, and IBTL.

+The Blorenges Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 "Geek"? Did he imply I'm a geek? Wow. I've never been called a geek before. That's a step up the geocaching ladder, for sure! This is a bit unfair, laughin (Did you mislay your g somewhere? We could help you find that...), you get to laugh at us and our strange ways but we don't get to poke fun at you and your hobbies. Do you have any? (Apart from wandering around these forums sniggering from time to time.) MrsB

+the4dirtydogs Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 (edited) I really think you're right. I have sat back and watched geocachers in action looking for a cache and I swear it's one of the funniest things I have seen. Wandering around in circle, searching in bushes looking like an ostrich with it's head in the sand , trying to be sneaky in a busy muggle area. How about a power trail, now that's funny watching someone jump in and out of the car for miles and mile every 528ft. But I tell you what... I have a blast doing all the above and this is what keeps me from going mad. Not to mention I've met some real good people playing the crazy game and I will probably be friends with them for the rest of my life. So yeah we might be barking mad but there sure is a bunch of us. gplee13 Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 I am 22 years old and I just started geocaching... I absolutely love it. Me and many of my longtime friends from middle school geocache all around my area and it is just a blast. So don't knock it before you try it. Also, do you really care and think it matters that much how "dorky" people are on the forums? I am 22 and I really enjoy Harry Potter as well as Lord of the Rings. Are you also gonna call me a dork because I love the Toy Story movies? It's something I somewhat grew up with. So in that sense I don't see anything wrong with people reading and enjoying certain books or the like. I am a pretty average college student. Currently working an internship in Chicago, I go to NIU which is a pretty big university in Illinois. I was in a fraternity. I am a pretty sociable person. I am not saying am hot stuff, or the most popular, but people from all walks of life can certainly enjoy this hobby. It is a hobby like anything else. I think this is an extremely beneficial hobby not only to Geocachers themselves, but to society. It encourages going out and being active. It is a fun, different, safe (usually) activity. Not to mention things like the friendships you make, the places you explore and experience, and even things such as the CITO campaign. I might not be the most experienced in this hobby, but I really enjoy it already, and i see the comradery of the community even here on the forums. My advice would be, just don't worry about how "crazy" or "dorky" or "weird" people seem on the forums. Just worry about yourself, and as long as no one is getting hurt, then there is no harm.

Mr.Yuck Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 I didn't call anyone a geek. ... Actualy, you did. Well isn't this interesting. Read the OP, and then read my post quoted below from about 5 days ago. I think I may indeed be the geek in question. However, I'm not 60. I'm not even 50, although pretty close. Obviously a kid, or kids, I wouldn't read too much into the Nazi stuff, and say that he needs help or anything. Now if he's doing that when he's like 20 years old or something, yeah, get some help. Muggles by the way, not Mugglers. I'll bet half the Geocaching community doesn't know the whole Harry Potter connection. I of course am a geek who has read every book, and seen every movie. A fact I don't usually admit publicly, so there you go.
AZcachemeister Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Heh, Yeah. It's like calling in to a radio talk show, and complaining to the host that everyone listening is somehow deficient. We live in our own little world, but it's nice 'cause everyone knows us here.

Writing on a piece of paper and putting it into a rock? Please don't lump me with those 60 year olds. I've worked hard to get the years I got and I intend to enjoy them. I happen to enjoy walking in the woods and enjoying what little sunshine we get up here in the north wet, and I happen to enjoy finding an odd ammo can or lock n lock in the woods. Much better than what the alternative can be, and I have seen the alternative. Sorry I can't chat more, but I need to go read a couple more Potter chapters. Hmmm, maybe I'll do LOTR tonight. Then I have some time to be geeky with my computer before I have that glass of warm milk.
