5th International Math Trade

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

It is time for another math trade!

I've created a Google spreadsheet similar to the one used last year.

Just send an email to:

mathtrade5@gmail.com

with the following info:

- Caching Name

- Mailing Address

- email

I will give you access to the spreadsheet and you can start adding coins!

The trade will be divided into four phases:

1. Coin submission - entering your trade offers into the spreadsheet (ends Jan 21st, 9pm EST)

2. Regroup - reorganize your coin submissions to create groups (ends Jan 28th, 9pm EST or earlier)

3. Want list submission - create your wish lists! (ends Feb 7th, 9pm EST or earlier)

4. Trading! - trade list generated and emailed to you (starts Feb 8th if all goes well!)

Please respect the following rules:

1. This is an international trade - only take part in it if you are willing to pay for a possible overseas shipment of your coins! Remember that in theory each coin that you trade away may have to be sent to a different destination, within or outside of your own country.

2. You can list both trackable and non-trackable coins. If nothing is mentioned in the Remarks column, the coin will be assumed to be trackable and unactivated. In all other cases the status of the coin needs to be specified in the Remarks column. Activated coins are only allowed if they will be offered up for adoption.

3. Participants may only submit one coin of any one edition (same coin with same finish/colour/etc) to trade. Duplicates are not allowed.

4. Please make sure you adhere to the deadlines shown above! Any edit after a deadline will be ignored!

5. Please keep your list to 50 coins or less!

Keep an eye on this thread - I will use it to post additional information/clarifications whenever needed!

Of course you can also use it to post any questions or remarks.

A More Detailed Explanation:

Q. What is a geocoin math trade? What makes it different from a 'normal' trade?

A. In a ' normal' trade, person A gives coin X to person B and person B give coin Y to person A. Sometimes person A wants a coin that person B has, but has nothing that interests person B to give in return. In that case person A could go looking for a person C to arrange a trade to get a coin from person's B want list. In a math trade you don't have to hunt for a 'person C' -- the software will do this for you! The math trade software will find optimal 'trade chains', some of which may involve just the regular 2 coins, while other 'trade chains' that are part of the same math trade may involve 3, 4, 5 or even more coins.

Q. I feel uncomfortable listing coin offers without knowing what I'll receive in return for them. Why would I do this?

A. You will be the one to decide what you'll get in return. After everyone has listed their coin offers, you can go through the total list of offers and make a want list for every coin you have offered. If you are not interested in trading one of your coins for any of the listed offers, you will simply use an empty want list for it, so that your coin won't be traded at all.

Q. What if someone offers a coin that I REALLY want? Is there a way that I can maybe offer 2 of my coins in exchange for this coveted coin?

A. Yes, there is. After Phase 1 (entering coin offers), we will enter Phase 2 (regrouping). During this phase you have a chance to look closely at the coins that are being offered, and if there are coins you would really want to get, you could try and create a more interesting offer by grouping two or more of your coins into one offer. If you group coin X and Y together, then these will not be traded separately, but as one single unit, for which you can decide (during the want list submission phase) what you want to trade them for.

(Detailed instructions for this regrouping will follow once we hit that phase (but don't worry, it's actually quite simple).

Q. Two or more people have listed one specific coin that I like. But if I include both in my want lists for, say, two of my coins, I risk ending up with 2 copies of the same coin. Is there a way to prevent this?

A. Yes, there is (more verbose answer to follow soon).

I'm in too!

As for how complicated it is: Don't think about it too much. Just go with it. Somehow it all works out. It's a mystery!

Looks like there is an extra step for people who don't have gmail accounts.

If you are signing up with an email account that is not with gmail, you will have to create a Google account. This is NOT an email account. Just an account that lets you access the secure Google areas.

Just enter the email address you used to enter the Math Trade and set a password. You should then be able to use the link to the Math Trade document. If you still encounter difficulties, please let me know.

What about those of us who have a gmail account but simply don't want to use it as our email account? I sent you an email on this.

I just don't want email at gmail because I won't see it.

You could make another gmail-account and have all the mail forwarded. Or you could use it as a POP3 account and get all the mail in your e-mailclient.

You aren't required to have a gmail account. You just need to have a Google website account. The email you provide when you ask to be added to the document will be the email I use for all communications.

so if person (A) has a coin, person (x) and person (y) want,, how is it decided who gets the coin?

The software picks the pattern which allows the most trades to be made. If picking person X allows for more trades overall to be completed than picking person Y, then person X gets it.

Bumping back to the main page

Can you please remind people to mention if the coin is indeed activated.

I got a few trades last time that were supposed to be unactivated coins and they were not.

I'm in, and have just clarified my listings to specify trackable and unactivated. All of mine fall into this category except one, and that one is listed as "nontrackable" as well. I'm so looking forward to participating these year - keep the coins coming, people!

I'm trying to get another coin, should order it on Monday. But that'll only be my 4th coin in the trade.

Anyway, I do see some coins I know that I'd love to make on my list, but does anyone know a good site that I can see pictures of the coins that I am not familiar with?

SO I HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION,,

is it possible for say 10 coins traded away but only 5 coming in? or is it coin for coin, with out the grouping concept.

It is coin for coin without the grouping concept.

Questions:

-Are we allowed to list all the different versions of a same coin, like If I want to list my 4 versions of my Turlutortue geocoin or the 6 versions of the compass rose 2009???

- I will have my Turlutortue coins in time for the trade (so I've been told), can I list them on the first phase?? :P

Thanks

Oh, man...I forgot about rule #3 and multiple versions of the same coin.

My duplicates FOR SURE will be deleted now.

And I guess the Mimbres coins will have to go as well? I'm referring to the 3.0 coins...

Chuck hasn't answered, so I'll go with two things. First, I read rule #3 to mean nothing can be identical, down to the finish. And second, we've always been able to list full sets of stuff, i.e. (8) Mimbres V3 and (6) Compass Rose 2009 coins. As long as it's one of each. So don't worry :)

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to drop out of the mission. :) I just bought a new cachemobile but, now have to come up with $600 to pay sales tax. By the 29th of tis month. :) I'm going to have to sell all my coins I had for trades and missions on that yucky E place so I can try to raise a chunk of the money needed. :)

Hi everyone! It has been a busy weekend; sorry for not responding earlier. TMA has it right though, and thanks for answering. You can enter multiple versions of the same geocoin, as long as each one is different somehow (different finish, colour combination, personalization, etc). Don't try to use the argument that the tracking numbers are different though! :D
