A rarely found cache

GCKZTW has been on my "to do" list for awhile now. I tried it in January 09 but deep snow prevented us from getting close to it and I haven't had a chance for another try until today. It was published on November 4th 2004 and including my find today it has only been logged 32 times. until today it's last log was July 2008. it is not a difficult cache but it is in an unusual area. I found it rather enjoyable.

That's an interesting cache description: I like it when someone puts a bit of personal history to explain what makes the spot special to them. The old photograph from the 60s in the Gallery is a nice touch too.

Cool looking cache. It seems like a lot of people are missing out.

Like Mr. Dolphin above I have several that have fewer finds over a similar amount of time. The few people who attempt them really seem to enjoy them so that's all I care about.

GCYPMZ has only been out 3 years but it isn't found very often. It is still my favorite find. The description is a little deceiving where it says "Depending on the time of year, getting to this falls may require some bushwhacking since there are no marked trails to find it". The brush is so thick and the ground is so soft that it took us an hour to walk .6 of a mile to the cache. I'd call that a little more than "some bushshacking". When you get near GZ it becomes apparent that the cache is on the face of a very large rock so be prepared to do some rock climbing for this one.

We are going to return to Michigan's Upper Peninsula next summer to look for more of these waterfall caches. There are nearly 200 waterfalls in the U.P. and most have a cache near them.

We logged Moreau Peak GC2859 this year. It was placed 11/10/01 and has been found 12 times. We found it July 15, 2009. It had been over 2 years since it had been found previously. The last time it had been found prior to us was June 6, 2007. So far we're the only people to have visited this cache this year.

On 06/07/03 we found Wild Bunch Cache GC8385. It was placed 08/04/02 and was found 8 times with the last being in 2005.

Neither were particularly difficult in dry weather and could be reached in a 2 wheel drive vehicle provided it didn't have low clearance. Both in out of the way places. You had to intend to go there. They definitely weren't drive bys.

One of my all time favorites is GCA78B-Concrete Ghost of The War placed in November of 2002 with only 10 finds to date. When I found it it only had 6 finds on it and had not been found in over three years. I rented a kayak and found the cache at 11pm, still light out and was followed back to the rental place by a seal that was sure I had some fish with me. A great adventure that I will cherish for a long time.

Reading the logs for this cache sounds like a fun one to do. However, I did note that one log mentioned No Trespassing signs.

If I was going to attempt a cache and saw those signs, I might skip it until I had some assurance the cache was OK. That may, or may not have something to do with the low numbers of finders.

I suspect it has more to do with the cache being a little out of the way thou.

The signs are a little confusing if you don't know the area or do the research before going there. living near and doing a lot of geocaching close to the borders of an Indian reservation we have to consult our maps and be sure of where we are. I suppose that would be best for any areas that border private property.

I placed one in 4/2005, and has only been found 16 times, with the last find 18 months ago.

It is a 20 miles hike, so that might be the reason. Like briansnat said,

"The few people who attempt them really seem to enjoy them so that's all I care about."

My Geo-boyfriend has one cache that has been found 35 times since 2002. GC722E

He has two caches up on that mountain, which is one of his favorites.

He takes a lot of pleasure in doing many hikes a year up there to "do cache maintence."

If his cache was in a city it probably would not get so much maintence.

Here in WA state there is a challenge cache that you have to find, I think, ten caches that have under ten finds on them in the first year of their existence, that you have to be one of those ten.

Yikes. I would imagine the people who have gotten that one are avid hikers.

Although the boating caches don't get a lot of attention either.

One not far from here has 22 finds since 2007.

Another water cache nearby has 28 since 2004.

And these two are in a busy city.

GCJ825 Rivas Ridge is 5-1/2 years old and has 15 finds. (One of the logged finds is almost certainly erroneous.) And it's not out in the middle of Wyoming -- it's barely a mile, as the crow flies, from densely populated neighborhoods on the edge of Los Angeles.

GCAE57 Buddah's [sic] Belly is almost 7 years old and has 35 finds. It's just off popular hiking trails near Thousand Oaks CA -- still a couple million people within a one-hour drive.

Both require some skills navigating off maintained trails, and a good bit more strenuous hike than the cache in the OP (which seems to be rated assuming you'll have to stop driving some ways back). But both have been continuously available since placement.

GCQ1WJ 1999 is 4 years old and has 12 finds. The nearby GCJNQN Gordon's Power Workout has 19 finds in 5 years. Both, again, are very near densely populated areas.

GCHBWA 4x4 Adventure has 19 finds in almost 6 years. Suffers from a misleading name (4x4s no longer allowed in the area).

GCZAEP Breadcrumbs has 10 finds in 3 years. For a mystery cache, it's pretty easy. Again, dense population within a couple of miles.

You can find lonely caches anywhere.

well here is another related statistic but on a sadder note. I got an email today telling me that one of my TB's went missing. It made just one leg of it's journey from my cache where it stepped out into the cruel world to it's first stop where the entire TB hotel and all the contents, including my poor little guy, went missing. A cruel, cruel world it is!

Sounds like a very cool place. I'm surprised it hasn't been visited more.

We lived in western MA in the early 90's and had season ski passes at Mt. Tom. It's out of business, and I imagine will look much like this in time. I was hiking out there last fall and the decay is already starting.

NC has a lonely cache challenge. You need to find one that hasn't been found in a year. We appreciate all the suggestions made in this thread for caches that will allow us to complete the challenge.

one of my TB's ... made just one leg of it's journey ... went missing

I placed one in SoCal. The cacher who picked it up (someone I know) took it to Hawaii. Someone else picked it up a few days later and took it to Vancouver. And it disappeared from the cache there. Yet it's still the highest milage TB I have due to that trip to Hawaii and back.

I have several hidden that I expect will not be found more than 10 times in the next 3 years.

During the challenge cache that I did in 2006, one of the most memorable was Cougar Rock (GCP4B4).

I found it on September 16, 2006. It was found yesterday by a cacher with less than 20 finds.

This cache has now been found 14 times since 5/30/05.

If I'm heading into a new area for caching, I look at the listings for caches that have not been found in years.
