+ADKSherpa Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 I've been working at getting my 100th cache since July 2006. I was wondering what the average amount of time it takes people to get that milestone. If you know me, I am still in Middle School and do a lot of extracurrecular stuff. Whats it take others like me? I've been really working at it though. Quote
+Bunganator Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 I started caching in high school, so i know what its like with homework and stuff. It took me 5 months to get to 100, but I was a senior in HS and could drive. For a middle school kid, keep going. I know its hard to find time and transportation. Maybe find some buddys to spend a day with your family and go find a few. You shouldn't be too worried about hitting an average. In fact, many cachers quit before they get there. Just keep having fun. Quote
+StarBrand Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Took me about 2.5 years after I got started. My record for finding 100 is 32 days. I generally get around 200 per year the past 2 years. Quote
+egami Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 I am averaging maybe slightly more than 1/month. Quote
+joranda Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 I hit my first 100 in about 3 weeks. But I did go pretty much every day. Quote
Clown Knife Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 I started hunting geocaches in October of 2002. I bagged my 100th find in October of 2004. Today I logged my 146th find. As much as I enjoy hunting caches, I am not obsessed with it. Some folks don't go to the bathroom in their own housees without their GPSRs in their hands. I live in the heart of the California Silicon Valley were there are thousands of cute little MICRO CACHES hidden in high traffice areas in devious ways. I've almost stopped hunting those silly hides. I find it to be a waste of time. I cut my teeth hunting real geocaches in ammo cans that had lots of goodies in them. It seems the sport has migrated to the silly thoughtless micros in my area today. What a pity. Quote
+briansnat Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 My first 100 took me nearly a year and a half. Some people do 100 in a day. Many never reach 100. Quote

Say there pardner, just how many more years do you think that it is going to take you to make it out of middle school? Quote
+BlueDeuce Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 I am averaging maybe slightly more than 1/month. Well, living in the cache-rich side of Iowa it's no wonder, braggart. Quote
+egami Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 lol, yeah, you'd think I'd have more finds working in W DSM. I should start finding some over lunch on occasion. Quote
+Difranco Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 I hit 100 just over 2 months. I cache everywhere I go... so I've pretty much got every cache on all my regular travel routes. So I've slowed down quite a bit. Quote
+Rattlebars Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 1st find 2/05/05 with #100 on 4/19/05. Dead of winter..... Quote
k1w1t1m Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 My wife and I bought each other GPSs for Christmas. We found about 150 caches the first year and about 50 the second year. We met the goal we set of 200 in two years with a couple of extras for this year. We cache when we want to. Quote
+The Leprechauns Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 It took me 113 days to find my first 100 caches back in 2002 when they were further apart. The fastest I ever found 100 caches was about nine hours, in 2004 -- that was a fun day. The longest was 261 days, from summer 2005 to spring 2006 -- I wasn't enjoying geocaching so much then. My average lately is 100 caches every five or six weeks. It all depends on how much fun I'm having. If I'm in a good mood I will find more; if I am not having fun I don't go out as often. During winter weather, my find rate tends to drop off a bit. By May it is back in full swing. So, as long as you are having fun, it doesn't matter whether you find 100 caches in 100 days or 1000 days. It is not a race and there are no losers. Everyone who's enjoying themselves is a winner. Quote
+Ambrosia Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Everyone's different. It depends on how many caches are close to your home, how much you travel, which kind of cache hides you like, how busy you are, how obsessed you are with caching, etc. As Lep said, as long as you're having fun, that's all that matters. +CYBret Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 It took me exactly one year to find my first 100 caches....and that was pushing myself pretty hard! My 200th was found six months after that and my 300th in the next three months. That pretty much reflects the growth of geocaching in our area. At this point I'm pushing myself to find my 3000th on February 12th which will be the 6th anniversary of my first find (difficult to do considering the weather and schedules). That's 500 finds a year...of course it took me 2 and a half years to find my first 500! I like the pace I'm moving at just fine. Quote
+geomann1 Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Took me about 5 or so to find first 200, but pace has slacked off considerably. Hit most of the nearby caches that are worth looking for, now I pick up a couple or so when traveling or when a new one is posted in my area. I've also become much more selective; I won't get out of the car for a LPC. I focus on the ones I enjoy which are in natural areas and involve some hiking. Quote
Scamp Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Joined in '02-- have found 51 caches. So I figure I'm on pace to find number 100 in about 2014. =P I don't call it slow-- it's *leisurely*. Quote

+sbell111 Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 I found my first cache on 6/4/01. I found my 100th cache 271 days later on 3/2/02. Quote

Unfortunately, for many of us, there is no way to get that data since the posts in the old forums aren't tied to our account. Edited January 15, 2008 by sbell111 Quote

I agree. I only have a four year old, and while he might tolerate looking for 1 or 2 caches at a stretch he would rather do something else pretty quickly. I read a post awhile back about some woman that got 1000 in her first year. I've got 262 after just over a year . Now that I have found all but three within 10 miles from home it's getting more difficult to get large bunches unless I some time off of work. Despite a stead snow most of the day yesterday I took the day off (it was my birthday) and grabbed 10 caches. I also had 5 DNFs, two due to muggle activity (one involving a firetruck), two because they were inaccessible due to snow conditions, and one that I just couldn't find. Quote

I work hard at fostering my snarky, antisocial image. You're going to ruin it. (It was good to meet you and visit with everyone.) Quote
