+MTH Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 John of Gaunt DING. His geneology is quite impressive: he was a direct decendant of William the Conqueror and a direct ancestor of every monarch since Henry VII in 1485 including the current queen. Quote
+The Patrician Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 Thanks for that. It would have been harder had it not been for the Beeb's recent "Hollow Crown" series! The Swallow Sidecar Company was founded in 1922 and changed to S.S. Cars Ltd in 1934. After the Second World War, due to the unfavourable connotations of the SS initials, the company was renamed...... To become which famous British motor manufacturer? Quote

+mellers Posted August 16, 2012 Posted August 16, 2012 Under SP's "one week" rule, I'll step in to get this going again with a nice easy one. How many GOLD medals did team GB win at the 2012 London Olympic Games? Quote
+mellers Posted August 16, 2012 Posted August 16, 2012 Oops, never saw that Hey - Marty! Fancy having a guess then? Quote
+MartyBartfast Posted August 16, 2012 Posted August 16, 2012 Oops, never saw that Hey - Marty! Fancy having a guess then? Too late, I already googled it. I was in the right ballpark and Mrs MB had the same idea as me, but we were wrong. Quote
+MTH Posted August 16, 2012 Posted August 16, 2012 (edited) Oops - double post Edited August 16, 2012 by MTH Quote
+MTH Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 Sticking to the Olympics, Great Britain has only won more than 29 gold medals once. In which year? Quote
+MTH Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 1908 DING Britain won 56 golds in London that year. Since only 22 nations took part and over 1/3 of the competitors were British it would be a huge surprise if we ever came close to that total again. Quote
+Dogfort Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 (edited) OK my turn. How many roads are there in London? Edited August 18, 2012 by Dogfort Quote
dodgydaved Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 OK my turn. How many roads are there in London? According to an article I read an hour or so ago there is half a road in the City of London - half of Goswell Road (the other half is in Islington) - apparently this could be because all the by-ways in the city were already named when the concept of "Road" as a name was introduced. Quote
+Dogfort Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 heh ummmmm thats a DING! I read this today as well. On the Londonist? Quote
dodgydaved Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 heh ummmmm thats a DING! I read this today as well. On the Londonist? Yup! OK - am off to the test match today soooooo: What was special about the second day of the Lord's Test against the Windies in 2000? Quote
+Pharisee Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 heh ummmmm thats a DING! I read this today as well. On the Londonist? Yup! OK - am off to the test match today soooooo: What was special about the second day of the Lord's Test against the Windies in 2000? It didn't rain? Quote
+MTH Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 I posted an answer this morning but ir's not there??? All 4 innings took part on the same day. Quote
dodgydaved Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 heh ummmmm thats a DING! I read this today as well. On the Londonist? Yup! OK - am off to the test match today soooooo: What was special about the second day of the Lord's Test against the Windies in 2000? It didn't rain? Very droll John, but no!! Quote
dodgydaved Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 I posted an answer this morning but ir's not there??? All 4 innings took part on the same day. That's the answer - DING - and over to you!! Quote
Pajaholic Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 According to the Lords website, it was also the 100th test match played at the ground. Quote
+MTH Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 I'll stick with cricket. The current Lord's test is Andrew Strauss's 100th test and 50th as captain - neither of which is a record. So who has been captain in most test matches? Quote
+Dogfort Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Mike Atherton. It was his era I grew up and fell in love with cricket. Christ knows why when he was captian. Quote
+MTH Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Mike Atherton Nope. I didn't specify English Quote
+MTH Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Graeme SMith DING The current test is Smith's 94th as test captain, breaking Alan Border's record of 93. Not bad considering Smith has "only" played 101 tests. You would have been forgiven for missing the milestone though as all the focus seemed to be on Strauss. Incidentally, Atherton holds the English record at 54 which will get beaten this winter assuming Strauss stays on as captain Quote
+Dogfort Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Change of subject now. Which premier league club is the oldest? Quote
+Dogfort Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Great guess but no. By my reckoning there is a team in the Premier League that is a few years older. Quote
+MartyBartfast Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 I know very little about footie, but purely because I did a multi which involved a visit to the area where they started as a company team I'll guess "West Ham". Quote
+Dogfort Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Nope I dont know how old they are but it isnt them. Quote
+MTH Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 I expect it's going to be a northern club. I'm tempted to go for Newton Heath, but will have a guess at Wigan. Quote
+The Patrician Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Arsenal? I think they were the first club from southern England to join the league, football was obviously a dirty northern habit to begin with! Quote
+TheOldfields Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 I think that there are two other clubs currently prem league that were founder members. Stoke? Quote
+Dogfort Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Going for a nothern team is incorrect Going for a southern team is incorrect too Quote
+Dogfort Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 DING to TheOldfields. Sorry I miss that you had put the correct answer. Quote
+TheOldfields Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 The last of my guesses.... West Brom? Quote
+MartyBartfast Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 The last of my guesses.... West Brom? Err, you were right with Stoke I think Quote
+TheOldfields Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Ah. Confusion reigns. Always good. Anyways... who's the only woman to play Dr Who on the BBC? Quote
+MartyBartfast Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Was it Tracey Ann Oberman, in some sort of crossover storyline? Quote
+Misty and Minou Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Hmm I can't remember the name of the person but was it the comedy episode with Rowan Atkinson as part of Comic Relief? Quote
+TheOldfields Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Not quite worth a ding, but M&M is correct there. Quote
+Simply Paul Posted August 23, 2012 Author Posted August 23, 2012 Remember back to 1999. Doctor Who and the Curse of Fatal Death featured 'JoLum' as the 13th doctor. Quote
+TheOldfields Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Joanna Lumley gets a ding. As well as her and Rowan Atkinson, also featured Richard E Grant, Jim Broadbent and Hugh Grant as various versions of the Doctor, with Jonathan Pryce as the Master and Julia Sawalha as the Dr's other half. Quote
+Simply Paul Posted August 23, 2012 Author Posted August 23, 2012 Mmm, Julia Sawalha. As Emma. I don't remember Hugh Grant in it, but it was a while ago. Sticking with... Jonathan Pryce, in which Terry Gilliam film did he star? Quote
