had to google Poncherello to see who you meant, but I still don't have the name.

Ok... Well... It's been a while since I asked the question.

World speedway champion, defended his title on home soil, retired from the sport to make CHiPs. Who is he?

Extra help: I was a cadet in CHiPs, and my character's first name was was the same as mine. In the UK, I rode for Cradley Heath Heathens, becoming the first of 3 world champions from that team in a 10 year period.

It's been a few days....is anybody really going to get this now without Googling??

Rule 1 - No googling!

Rule 2 - Try and keep your question at the level someone in a pub quiz might be able to answer.

.....I used to watch speedway a lot when I was younger...but that was when Ole Olsen was riding and Michael Lee was a teenager... :o

Ole was still riding, finishing second to this man in the first of the two championships, at Wembley.. Michael Lee was world champion in 1980 (I think)... The person in question won it in 1981 and 1982.

Yeah... I'd have thought that somebody out there knows this... And it's a lot less obscure than my Janhangir Kahn one, which was answered. At one point Speedway was the country's second biggest spectator sport, and CHiPs was pretty well watched by those of a certain age... I'd wager a few out there have a copy of the 1999 film, which this guy is also in.

Now off to Google!

I had to google (so I won't post the answer!). It's not a name I really recognise as I didn't go much after 1980...boy to I feel old now!!

It led to me asking Mr F who 'that actor' was who looked like Poncherello, 'you know his name sounded like Chichi or coco..one of the foremost celebrities with just one word for a name!' Mr F just replied dryly 'Socrates?'

The latest version of Rules and Regulations for the prevention of Fire Risks Arising from Electric Lighting, first published in 1882, is now known as what, exactly?

Ok a strange one, not your general knowledge...more a riddle.

"How many beans make 5?"

Well my ol' dad (bless him) always used to tell me it was "One bean, two beans, a bean and a half, and half a bean". To be honest, I still have absolutely no idea what he was on about.

@ Pharisee "Ding" close enough!

My dad would tell me it was "bean, bean, bean and a half, half a bean and a bean"..which is something I've passed on to my son! :)

Allegedly, this is/was something from which you could tell which class a person came from. So the theory goes, upper and middle class people would have learned from their nannies that it was 'A bean, two beans, a bean and a half and half a bean', while the hoi polloi would not be privvy to this. Hence the rather derogatory expression, "He doesn't know how many beans make 5" to imply that the subject is someone of lower status.

As it's the British Grand Prix at my local racing circuit this weekend, a related question would seem to be in order.

The first ever "Formula One" Grand Prix was held at Silverstone in 1950. It was won by Giuseppe 'Nino' Farina but what make of car was he driving?

Does looking in Juan Manuel Fangio's biography count as googling?

Farina was one of three of Fangio's stable mates, i.e. they all drove for the same team. Fangio retired from the race leaving his stablemates (Farina, Fagioli, and Parnell) to take all three podium places. If my use of Fangio's biography doesn't count as googling, I can tell you the make of car they drove; if it does, then I've just dropped an enormous clue or three!

Clever question as I think there were 4 or 5 grand prix races before this one... The 1950 formula one winner was driving an alfa romeo though I believe.

No, that's fine. Many people have used books & atlases etc in the past.

In which case, I suppose that the best I can now do is confirm that NattyBooshka is correct as Farina, Fangio, Fagioli, and Parnell all drove Alfa-Romeo 158s. It was the last year of the 158s as Alfa fielded the almost identical 159s in 1951. Alfa pretty much dominated GP racing during that era, so their taking all podium places was not unusual.

He was indeed driving an Alfa Romeo... DING!

Ok... Same topic for formula one buffs.

The first two British Grand Prix races, which were not part of the formula one competition, were held at which circuit?

I'll hazard a guess that the first two British GP races ever were held at Brooklands.

Ascari? I know he has the one season record

Ascari? I know he has the one season record

Unfortunately not, although Alberto Ascari probably would have had the career percentage record but for his tragic death in 1955. His one season record was for 1952. In those days there weren't so many races each season and he won 6 of the 8 races he entered that year - an incredible 75%.
