+3Caballeros
There's a really great old Railroad Bridge near my house and I want to place a cache underneth. Is it OK, since definately more than 150' to walk to the tracks even thought the cache would be somewhere under the structure? The railroad is still active, but it's only used for slow frieght. I'm afraid if I move it away from the bridge then I'll be in someone's property. See image: Any ideas? Quote Link to comment
+Davispak
Since it is still active I would have to say no on that. Quote Link to comment
+Renegade Knight
Even though the RR is elevated, the odds are they own the property underneath. RR's are very, very protective of their property rights and the answer from Groundspeak would be "No". The only way to have a cache there would be with permission from the RR. Also this is a bad location for another reason in that the RR would be considered a "High Risk" target and for that reason the answer would be no. 200' away would be a much better location. You still see the bridge and can investigate if you wish. Quote Link to comment
+Sagefox
Hello cabs. Don't do it!!! Scan through this forum and look for the the words "bomb scare" and "cache blown up by bomb squad". When the search feature returns you can find these topics easily. Containers at the base of active railroad bridges, if found by muggles or the rr bridge inspection crew, might just cause more problems than you'd ever want to have . Quote Link to comment
Tahosa and Sons
Neat bridge. But I don't think it would be approved. Rail right of ways are a no trespassing area. And it sounds like the adjoining property is private. Unless you can get permission from the local landowner then you would face a not published. Quote Link to comment
+Renegade Knight
Cool bridge though. That's the kind of thing I like to find while caching. I hope you do get a cache in the vicinity. Quote Link to comment
+JimmyEv
You could do a multi, use something on one of the legs (they might have some kind of numbers on them) or the number of structural components (cross-braces) above the road to redirect to a final cache somewhere close. I like that bridge. Quote Link to comment
+fox-and-the-hound
We just found a similar cache a couple weeks ago, but the cache setter simply went down the road to a scenic overlook type spot and placed there. It's a pretty neat bridge and chances are there will be something similar nearby or along the river/ravine in one direction or another. Keep looking around, you're bound to find something Quote Link to comment
+GRANPA ALEX
It probably would not be 'reviewed in the affirmative' even though you would not ever place it in a dangereous spot there . . . someone MAY search where you did not place the cache and be injured - maybe by climbing or by a train. You & gc.com do not really want or need this risk and pain . . . BUT, great location to bring us near to with a multi-stage or cache nearby. Quote Link to comment
+StarBrand
Cool Bridge - please don't put a cache there - just asking for a world of potential trouble. Place it nearby - you can clearly see the thing for quite a distance. Call it "Bridge View". Quote Link to comment
+Prime Suspect
I'm afraid if I move it away from the bridge then I'll be in someone's property. What makes you think that the area under the bridge isn't already somebody's property? It's either owned or leased by the railroad company. Quote Link to comment
+Glenn
First you should read this article. Its very sensationalized but makes a very good point. Then as others have suggested, you do not need to place the cache directly below the bridge. If I was out caching and saw that bridge in the distance I would definitely go check it out. If you want to make sure they see the bridge set up a multi-cache where the most logical route from cache to cache in the multi takes you under the bridge. Quote Link to comment
+3Caballeros
Thanks for all the well-thought-out feedback, this is an awesome community! I will go back to the area and search for a more suitable location where the GC'r will still benefit from the view. Thanks again! Quote Link to comment

Talk about being a Railfan . Here in SoCal we have a cache located near a Curved Trestle bridge, that is high on my to do list. I think your best bet is to make the cache a multi. +DiskDevil
WOW!! That is a nice bridge, so keep looking for a spot. Quote Link to comment
+fishingdude720
a cache near me was under 150 feet from the RR and got threatened to be blown up and the cacher who owned it to be sued. I wouln't take the chance. Quote Link to comment

+Glenn
WOW!! That is a nice bridge, so keep looking for a spot. Oops, I forgot to add that bridge looks great. I would love to have a change to find the cache you place near, but not too near, the bridge and see that area IRL. Quote Link to comment
+Renegade Knight
First you should read this article. Its very sensationalized but makes a very good point. The article is crap. Hopefully they have a disclaimer saying that they only use the truth as a jumping point for their fiction. Quote Link to comment
+3Caballeros
BTW, I finally finished placing the cache. Viola! Quote Link to comment
+The Leprechauns
1. Thank you for taking into consideration the advice you received. Good job on finding a hiding spot that featured the railroad trestle, but without causing any trespassing or security issues. 2. I play the viola. Violas rock! Not sure what it has to do with your cache, though. Quote Link to comment
johndmann
I know you found another place, but I wanted to comment on the original idea... Is there parking anywhere near there? I'm sure it is a little used road, but looking at that road, I would, personally, be reluctant to walk 100 yards or more down it to get to the tracks themselves. I love the view though Quote Link to comment
+fizzymagic
2. I play the viola. Violas rock! Not sure what it has to do with your cache, though. So do both my sisters. You know how you can tell the difference between a viola and an accordion? The viola burns better. But back on the topic: it's good to see somebody being clever about figuring out how to place a cache that conforms to the guidelines, rather than just complaining about it. Quote Link to comment
+The Leprechauns
... and also to take the advice of sincere forum posters, rather than flaming anyone who disagrees with a preconceived notion. I wish the OP's cache a long life and great logs. How is a viola player like a geocacher? Everyone's happier when he's out playing in the middle of the woods. Quote Link to comment

+gaits
I say go for it! I was in Kentucky with some caching buddies ans we went ot one directly under the train tracks. There was a cool story about the location and we had to walk about 200 feet to the location. Again, I say go for it place your cache Quote Link to comment
