  1. hahahaha - we only have some that look like that, but not in size. i suppose i could wing something like that though - looks good now to brainstorm on the material for shaping it - spray foam might work, but i'd have to contain it somhow (that stuff is pretty wild when you spray it!) - great pic lol
  2. Even if a tool is NOT required to find or open the cache? it will only be a couple of inches in the ground - the top half will be sticking out - it will be bigger than an ammo box lol
  3. hey now cacti... interesting..... though we don't have the big cacti that looks like trees :/ We have the small round "mouse ear" style cacti.
  4. Forbidden? I don't remember seeing that anywhere... Not that someone would have to dig to get it out! It would stick out a few inches from the ground.
  5. I have a 5 gallon bucket that i'd like to use to hide a cache sometime soon, but am still thinking of how to camo it. I've painted it green so far, and might put some brown splotches on it to finish the normal camo, but still would be easy to locate. I've thought about gluing or somehow affixing treebark on the outside of it, but am afraid it might stand out as we don't have a lot of trees that big around out here lol. I was also thinking of digging a small hole and sticking it in that, then covering the top of the bucket with something. So, I'm here asking what people have seen, what kind of ideas are out there and things.
  6. I wouldn't even let the log poster see the link, personally, unless you were going to add the replies to the cache page itself. Option 1) Link for anyone to reply to any log entry. Another user may ask a question of the log poster about something they said, for example. Log replies shown either collapsed on the cache page or only on the log entry's full view page. (when clicking the view on separate page link) Option 2) Link for cache owner and log poster to reply. Replies only visible when viewing the log entry on a separate page. (If you click the link on the log itself) Option 3) Link for cache owner ONLY so that they may reply directly to e-mail for the log poster to read what they have to say. Log entry will be auto-quoted, or a checkbox will be present for quote/no-quote. Log replies will NOT be visible on any pages. Now, I'd love for at least Option 3 to exist. Having Option 2 would be nice, but not necessary. Option 1 no one seems to like lol.
  7. I know you found another place, but I wanted to comment on the original idea... Is there parking anywhere near there? I'm sure it is a little used road, but looking at that road, I would, personally, be reluctant to walk 100 yards or more down it to get to the tracks themselves. I love the view though
  8. Did you read my alternative suggestion? Any thoughts on having such a link for the cache owner only? No one would be able to view the replies other than the person you respond to. This clears up any ugliness. Non-owners of the cache would not even know the link is there. Just to change: 1. Highlight Text 2. Right click>Copy/Ctrl-C/Edit>Copy 3. Click on username 4. Click on send message 5. Right click>Paste/Ctrl-V/Edit>Paste Into: 1. Click Reply
  9. Well, it would in a little way - but not overly so. I wouldn't thread them on the cache page itself - just a text note at the bottom next to "view log entry on a separate page" that says "3 replies" or whatever. Then you click through to view the log entry to see the replies. Keep them off of the cache page itself. It would allow me, as a cache owner, to respond to a log entry and ask further questions or whatever I need to do. Maybe only alow the cache owner and that particular log entry owner to reply? That level of ownership sounds good to me. Far too often I am forced to open a second browser window with the message box to the user in question, and then copy over what they said so that I can reply to it. Without being able to quote the user's log entry, many of them do not know what I'm talking about until I explain. It would save cache owners a lot of effort and time. I suppose I could settle for a cache owner visible only link that basically says "send pm to this user" and a check box for "quote log text". It's just a pain to have to copy the text manually every time.
  10. I'd like to see the ability to reply to a log entry. Currently there are only two choices - to write a note in the log for a cache, and hope that the user either comes back and sees it or is subscribed; or two: call up the user's info page and send an inter-site e-mail to them. It would be nice to have a link under each log entry where you can "reply" to the logging user. Doing so would either flag something on their view of the gc.com page - maybe a "You have replies" in the corner or something - or send them an e-mail just as if I had gone to their profile and sent a message that way. I'd be willing to clarify if this description is a little rusty...
  11. Also - there are two types of transparency in PNGs. The better transparency, alpha-channel, is not compatible with Internet Explorer. There would have to be caution taken to ensure that you only use single-color transparency on your PNGs so that both major browsers will support the image. Personally, I'm a Live Journal member, and have been for years. I don't use very much animation in the few icons I do use animation in - I have one with an animal that blinks, for example. I've noticed that a LOT of people have animated GIF icons on there, but due to the way Live Journal handles the GIFs, they don't have many problems either. Most people just have words that sparkle a little bit, or 5 or so images which rotate. Live Journal's servers limit their user icons to 100 pixels by 100 pixels, and a max file size of 100kb. This removes many of the heavy animations that could clog the system or cause distractions. Just a thought, though.
  12. I've only seen one wet log, but it wasn't soaked or anything. It came out of a prescription pill bottle in the hollow of a tree in a cemetery. It was wet enough for the pages to stick, but not bad enough to prevent writing and/or pulling the pages apart. It was before I started carrying my maintenance pack with me, so I didn't fix it - left a maintenance note on the cache page though. But that's not too bad - just one of them had leaked or condensated internally. (I choose the latter idea) Nice rocks!
  13. He fixed it so it now takes you to the GC.com profile. Yes that is all well and good but it wont update your card in the forums, how do we get information on there Because it has been fixed, that "card" no longer exists It is replaced by your GC.com "card"
  14. I document my finds and hides on my personal website. I don't see the harm in them doing that at all. BUT, I don't think they should post the link in their Found Logs... Maybe a link in their profile, sure. The point of having the pictures of your finds/hides is not to share them with everyone else - it's for your own personal use/enjoyment/memory lane. If someone wanted to check out their site, then they should be allowed to by going to their profile and clicking on it there. I make sure to only include log photos that do not show the area surrounding the hide. But that's just me. I don't want to spoil the game for anyone else. I took the time to find it, they can too lol. Speaking of which... I need to update my personal site's logbook! lol I got lazy over the last few days.
  15. I think that hiding micros is more challenging to a lot of people, as long as it is done cleverly. Of my past 30 or so caches, about 10 of them were 35mm film canisters Half of those were imprinted with the GC.com/Groundspeak logos. That's what made me think that they were the proper container for micros.
  16. I try to setup a cache before I place it. Doing this (just don't check the active button when setting up the cache) will give you a GC#### number to use. I do like the idea of the GC#### number, but it does take extra work for the cache placer.
  17. I always log a DNF, but explain in the log that I am or am not going back to look again, and why I said DNF. Usually it is something about me running out of time, or just couldn't figure it out. All of them I will keep trying until I find them. Multiple DNF's I disagree with. I just go back and edit my log. I leave the same information from the first DNF trip I made, but insert the second DNF information above it When I find the cache, I simply edit the log, and chage the log type. You just flip it from DNF to Found It, and type in your report on top of your last DNF log entry. This way, you have a single log for that cache which contains all of your previous information about your attempts. It just makes more sense to me that way I like things nice and tidy.
  18. I guess I'm just too paranoid I always get the feeling that if I ask, they'll want to charge me $5 a piece, or they might call in the Wally World Secret Service because I asked. Cashiers sneer at me if I pay with a $20 bill, and I get the feeling it is because I do not seem trustworthy or something. Maybe I just exude uncertainty? lol I still haven't gotten over there to ask, but I will eventually. I ended up buying the matchstick containers.
  19. So you would only use a cd that contained nothing but image files, and only after scanning those for viruses. This cuts out the choice of putting in a disc that is burned through a photo program, such as Picasa? That is how I share my pictures with friends, most of whom don't even know how to open files. It contains an auto-running picture slideshow/browser thing. Now, you can scan the disc for viruses, of course. I don't know anyone who still has auto-run enabled these days lol! I've not had a virus or spyware/malware on my system for many years due to being smart about what I download. If you're going to take the time to pick up a cd, then scan it - doesn't take too long anyhow... The point of the thread was not "is it safe to take a picture cd home", but assuming the cd was clean of all bad things, "would it be a good trade item"? In my opinion, it would be a great trade item, and I'd love to see more of them around. I'd still scan it when I got home, no matter who it came from, but I would still view everything on it
  20. The very first cache I went on, I went without GPS lol - Just knew where it would be from the description of the cache, and it was in the town I live, which is rather small. Had a lot of fun though I'm looking at upgrading to the 60cs/x (dunno abou the x yet hehe), and saving every penny until I can afford it. I'm currently using an explorist 100. I like Magellan's entry level models MUCH better than Garmin's, but Garmin has better high level models by far.
  21. I always save POIs on my GPS unit with the same GCXXXX that the website gives. This makes it easy to search by waypoint In your situation, I would try to remember the name of the cache, or why not just search from your profile's "Search for nearest caches from your home coordinates", and go through the list - how far away from you was it? Hopefully you remember something about it...
  22. Why not just recolor the background of your forum icon with the forum's background color
  23. So in order to upload an image that is not connected in any way to a cache, you have to upload it as your user picture, but just not select it for use as your user pic? Is that right? I'd like them to appear in my gallery, but not appear as my user pic and not on anyone's cache page I think what I just mentioned might work that way after reading this last big post... And about the file size - I haven't had any problems uploading images straight off my digital camera. My camera is a 4.1mp, and I always keep it on the best quality - this means I get images that are about 1.5 megs in file size and 2048xsomething (I think, maybe bigger!) in resolution. When I upload them to GC.com, the server just resizes it for me, so I don't have to bother. I don't like resizing the images on my own computer because I like my images very large - for printing, etc. I keep the original size images on my personal website anyhow . I just would like to add a few select images to my personal profile's gallery is all Thanks for the tips, and I think I know what to do now...
  24. Well, it's a 4.5/4.5 - I wouldn't expect many people to make it or attempt it. I'd love to try if I were in the area No one has ever found my caches.... But, of course, they are less than a week old
  25. If they were REALLY good pictures, I'd grab one Of course, I wouldn't know until I got to a computer... Sounds good to me, but I'd want it to be chock full of 1,000 pictures or something nuts
