+TrailGators
P.S. Who is Phil Vassar? He's CoUnTrY! Are you a country illiterate? Hint: Try Google. Dave I was just asking. If I was asking what Cheyenne Wyoming looked like you wouldn't tell me to go Google and find out. Anyhow, I asked Alyssa who he was and she said he was a country singer that has one really good song called "The Last Day of My Life." I've never heard it so I guess I'm "country illiterate." Who knows I may even like the song if I heard it....Anyhow she didn't tell me to go Google and find out the answer. I think we do too much of that these days. What ever happened to having conversations? Anyhow, back when I lived in Illinois I used to go to the VFW down the street from my house almost every week. They used to play a song on the jukebox called "The Dance" by Garth Brooks. I really liked the lyrics to that song.... And now I'm glad I didn't know The way it all would end the way it all would go Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain But I'd of had to miss the dance Edited July 29, 2006 by TrailGators Quote Link to comment

+Miragee
Monday and Tuesday fisnjack and I made some forays into the "Horse" fire burn area. Three of the four caches in the area closest to the Barrett Honor Camp survived. SMOKEY's "cAMMO Can" lost its cammo and was out in the open. Surprisingly, the contents of the can survived. Although we were told the area was closed, fisnjack and I "snuck" into Horsethief Canyon yesterday to check on the caches there. Night Hunter's "That Man Stole My Horse," which was hidden in an amazing hollow log, succumbed to the flames . . . It was less than 100 feet away from an area that did not burn. And, now it is time for some mourning for one of the most amazing caches I've ever found. This is "Latitude 32's Treasure Trove" cache in its hiding place when I found it last March. And, this is the cache and its treasure. And this is what fisnjack and I found yesterday after a long search through many inches of ash. :D Quote Link to comment

The lake was very cold and we didn't even think about taking a dip. We particularly didn't want to negotiate that tough trail out of there at night. There were some pretty good mud puddles that we had to cross and I didn't have the Jeep with a winch to pull us out. Quote Link to comment

It is SO remote the only way you get down there is by raft....and they only let 100 people a day down the river by raft. And that is done now by a lottery system....it used to be a 10 year wait list from what I understand. There are a couple of virtual caches further north up the river, however, it requires either getting there by raft or an 80 mile trek in on a dirt road. We were brought down to the bottom by Helicopter...started at Whitmore rapids and ended up on Lake Mead. While we were out there, we only saw one other raft with just two folks......It was great! Here are some photos: Our helpcopter down to the bottom: Our raft with our river guide Our sleeping arrangements Taking it easy cruising down the Colorado River inbetween Rapids I highly recommend this trip. +Let's Look Over Thayer
We had some real excitement August 4th on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It was raining buckets and we were sitting in our car hoping that the rain would stop long enough to fix breakfast. Suddenly there was a brilliant flash of light and a huge BOOOOM! About 100 yards away, there was a huge shower of sparks and then 30 feet of flame. Just as we were thinking that this is how forest fires start, the flames went out. After the rain stopped, we went to check it out. We found a tree with huge chunks taken out of it. Some of the pieces were thrown 100ft away. One chunk ripped big hole in the side of someone's tent (they had already gone for the day so they missed the action!) We peeked inside the tent and found a peice of wood about two feet long. A family was in another tent very close to the strike and they were pretty freaked out. They packed up all their gear and left within the hour. Later the Park Service came and decided that the tree had to be taken out. Much of its heartwood was gone and they were afraid that it might fall (with even worse effects...) so they cut it down. +RocketMan
Just as we were thinking that this is how forest fires start, the flames went out.................. WOW - That is an amazing story. Good thing no one was hurt. Too bad you didn't have the video camera running. Quote Link to comment
