Great idea Rocket Man. On the other hand this is the second time I've been ejected from the SD Thread. Wonder why? Great photo you posted to get things rolling. Looks like Jackie is ready for action at first hint of trouble.

There's about twenty San Diego Geocachers headed for a week or two off-roading near Moab, Utah. Kathy, Marty, Janie, and Robyn couldn't pass up a Las Vegas webcam along the way, GC53E1. Well, maybe it was the cocktails they couldn't pass up.

 

They didn't invite me. Guess why.

FYI - I picked up Trailgators yesterday at DIA and we drove to Grand Junction. Today we cached around Grand Junction and then drove to Moab arriving late in the day.

 

A funny thing yesterday was that we tried to do a cache in Eagle Colorado and couldn't find it. We looked in the recent logs on the PDA and the Dillon Gang had logged the cache this summer. We called Steve for a lifeline and with his help we bagged the cache. No that's what I call a long distance lifeline.

Awesome! and I spent half of my day on that little-bitty bump called south Fortuna Mountain. I'm so embarrased that I can't hide it.

 

I'm impressed that Steve Dillon can remember things what with the sort of work he does. ... and all that beer.

 

Looking forward to more pix from the Moab adventure. Don't forget a goup shot and don't you dare line up the group shot like a bunch of tourists. Arrange them in odd ways on an interesting formation and pay attention to the lighting.

 

For cryin' out loud.

 

Of course you'll have to help the really old and feeble ones if climbing or stretching is involved. I can provide names if need be.

Another case for a levels adjustment. That bright sky forced the camera to produce a landscape silhouette. A fundamental thing to do in these high-contrast situations is to lock exposure on the landscape features and then reframe to complete the shot. Of course that will result in a skyline burnout that will need correction anyway. Six of one, half-dozen of the other.

 

Photoshop of course, select everything but the sky. Easy way is to use the Magic Wand on the sky and then invert the selection. Either way the boundary line will need some fine tuning using the Paintbrush tool in the "Quick Mask" editing mode.

 

A useful trick to eliminate orphaned boundary-line pixels is to use "Free Transform" to ever-so slightly increase the size of the selection so that it overlaps and so covers up any orphaned pixels missed by the fine tuning. Of course the selection must be in the right stacking order for this to work.

 

Once you have the selection in hand then select "Layer/New/Layer via Copy" and then select "Image/Adjustments/Levels" for the new layer. Either fiddle with the levels sliders or just click the "Auto" button. Finish up with some 1-pixel layer masking before flattening the image for a jpg copy. Tada!

 

Sure would love to be there with my camera but your doing a great job with yours. Thanks for sharing.

Love those sunset shots. This ball of molten iron we live on sure knows how to put on a show doesn't it?

 

The other amazing thing about such a shot is that a camera captures an unexpected amount of detail in the dark areas. In this case the blue channel reveals a lot about the foreground after a bit of fiddling with levels.

This just in! (well sort of - it was 2 days ago)

Ruscal, Eagle Eye Rye, Artie and Bunny from San Antonio, Rocket Man, Fkrexcal and I did the 5th most difficult trail in Moab called "Hell's Revenge".

Trust me, the pictures don't do this terrorizing trail justice but here are a few:

Eagle Eye Rye on an adjacent cliff to "Lion's Back," the most dangerous hill in Moab or maybe anywhere...

This is an optional hill at the start of the trail and it costs $25 to try this insane stunt.

Fortunately for us, we couldn't seem to find any money!

Those that are crazy enough to attempt this challenge have to climb up the height of a ten story building on a slab barely wider than a Jeep.

But the worst part is that they have to turn around on extremely narrow top part and go back down!

The cross shown on the right was at the bottom from a poor soul that failed in his attempt to turn around at the top.

After pondering all that we began our adventure.....

This trail reminded me of a roller coaster without the rails that hold you safely to the track.

Remember what Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid said when thery jumped off that cliff?

Note the shadow angle behind Russ! This image was not Photoshopped!

Fkrexcal refused to ride down this one (and others) with RM and I.

I felt like a had to change my shorts after we were done.

Some shot, sort of a Heaven's Gate for good little Geocachers. Not sure how you guys got included.

 

The hard part was getting the windshield spot out of the tire track.

 

Guess I'll have to work up the other view, Dante's Inferno for bad little Geocachers.

 

Truth is that I was just experimenting with that burnt-in edge effect but it didn't turn out well. I wanted a smooth blend so that the transition from gray background to image wasn't apparent. O well.

While out caching with Snake and Rooster, and Trovamo on Sunday, we ran across this hat laying in the bushes. We called around to no avail, TT wasn't anywhere around.
