Brian,Lauren&Mom
I've recently hidden my first 2 caches. Now I'm doing some more reading in the forums and realized that I may have committed a faux-pas. Is it customary to have a special item is the cache for the "first finder". if so, should it be identified as such withing the cache? Quote Link to comment
+Criminal
NO! It is not customary to have FTF prizes, very few caches do. Actually, it is customary not to have them. Some people put these in as a way of rewarding the first finder, others do it as a way of getting people to visit an out-of-the-way cache. http://fp1.centurytel.net/Criminal_Page/ Quote Link to comment
+Smitherington
It is just a way to increase the interest in the cache. In some areas there is some competition to be the first finder. Then one can do either a real or a virtual first-finders-dance!! Some people do not take the first finders prize. There is a broad range of people types in this here geocaching thing. From time to time we put a FTF Item because we are in the boondocks, but that is a rare situation. Quote Link to comment
+Brian - Team A.I.
I've only put one FTF prize in a cache. It was in a cache themed around a movie, with gift certificates...for a movie. I think my next big cache is going to have something special in it, because it's going to be more difficult to solve than my last puzzle-type cache, and...giving anything else away might give some readers of the forums an edge. The title alone will strike fear in the hearts of geocachers. Brian Team A.I. Quote Link to comment
+Touchstone
I've put FTF prizes in a couple of caches. They don't have to be any great expense, and it seems that the response is very positive. I think finding signature items is pretty cool and almost as good a FTF (of which I've been nixed on a couple of occassions). Quote Link to comment
+Kealia
quote:The title alone will strike fear in the hearts of geocachers. Brian Team A.I. C'mon, how scary can something that Scrat came up with be? I like ot leave a little something for the FTF but it's by no means a requirement. It's fun to read the logs of cachers getting up at the break of dawn to beat each other out. Quote Link to comment
+9Key
A FTF on many 9Key caches will get a one-of-a-kind key chain. The keychain is a clear plastic fob that has an exclusive design that matches the cache theme. For example, this tag was claimed by Akulakat. People go buckwild for these things in the Dallas area. Attached to the key ring is a brass tag with a unique identifier engraved on it. This ID will be used for something, someday. I wish more caches had a FTF prize, especially caches that are extremely difficult. Its rewarding to have a token of your achievement. +flask
for reasons not known to me our area cachers DO put in FTF prizes. it's usually a little medal or tag. sometimes it's good loot, but we'll do amazing things for a cardboard circle with some ribbon around here. quod est, est. cenobite07
I have put FTF prizes in my caches but I also like to hide and seek the more difficult caches in the area. The higher value prizes tend to get people motivated to get out and do the work before all the hints and spoilers show up in logs. "We have such sites to show you..." Quote Link to comment
+PastorDIC
Is there any way to find the FTF Prize caches without looking through each new cache listing? Quote Link to comment
+yumitori
quote:Originally posted by minister:Is there any way to find the FTF Prize caches without looking through each new cache listing? Nope. there's no special designation. The cache owner announces its presence on the page if they put such a prize in. That's it. Ron/yumitori --- Remember what the dormouse said... CacheMonkeez
On some of my caches, I've honored the FTFer in the cache description. On this cache I named the cache after the FTFer. Quote Link to comment

We've been caching at 2 or 3 am. Quote Link to comment
+GIDEON-X
Myself I have been putting in a FTF PRIZE (CA, AZ Scratchers) --- the latest one is a chance to win $25,000 a year for the rest of your life! Check it out "Baker Tanks" cache (members only for the first 30 days) ~~~ "And now where" ~~~ Quote Link to comment
