Where The Heck…?

Did you ever read a forum post and wonder where the heck that guy is coming from? B)

Seriously…how often I have wondered just where (geographically) that person is! Often, knowing a poster’s location would shed insight. For instance, when people are discussing prices, or cache density, or weather, locale is important. Besides that, it’s just fun to know. Remember, geocaching is a global thing!

Before the recent redesign of the forums, location automatically appeared near the user’s screen name.

About that, Jeremy wrote:

I liked it too. It isn't an "official" feature of these forums, but I could probably figure out how to put it back. I'll look into it.

Or, you can always check the user’s profile page or stats, but it’s nice to see the information right there, while your reading the post.

In another topic someone suggested that regular forum users could simply include their location in the signature line. Some are doing that now. I think it’s a great idea and it’s so easy, even I can do it.

Just go to your cache page and change your account information (be sure to ID). Scroll to the bottom and type in your location (or coordinates). Then log out and back in.:D

Hmm - maybe I am missing something here... I changed my sinature line about 2 weeks ago and I still have the same one here at the bottom. I just assumed that the system was broken, so I haven't said anything about it. I take it that you're not having the same difficulty I was?

Some of us don't know where we are, or how to get there ... That is one reason why I refuse to stop at gas stations to ask directions, I'm afraid I'll get directions from someone thats dumber than me. Wait, technically thats not possible because I am the dumbest and that would make them dumberer.

Have you been coming to the forums through a bookmarked link? If so, go to the main geocaching.com page, and click the 'discuss geocaching' link, which will update your info. You need to do this any time you make changes, like your sig line, avatar, or forum title....

back on topic, I too like knowing where people are from, and have included my location in my sig line.

I just changed mine and it worked. Have you tried logging out and back in to the site? Sometimes changes won't take effect until you do that. If not that, then I don't know!

Edit: Looks like Warrior beat me!

This subject was brought up by MrPeabody in the "User Location Appears To Be Missing" thread in the GC.com Web Site forum on Nov.20, 2003, the last post was 1/28/04. That is probably the proper forum for this subject, but I can see why it was brought up here....more traffic.

I have a feeling that Jeremy is quietly working on this. I haven't followed the controversy about stats and images in the sig. line. Jeremy may not want to draw attention to those items. His low profile on the subject is probably a good idea. ;)

This is a worldwide game so it makes sense to know where people are. A lot of times I've seen someone hype up a particular cache and wonder whether or not it was near me. Odds are it isn't but having that info right there is helpful. I have a link to our local organization in my sig... hopefully "Maryland" is detailed enough to show where I am. ;)
