+Snake & Rooster
Was anyone else at the Sandcastle Competition in IB over the weekend? Thought this guy was pretty cool: Oh, and (to get back on topic) I found a benchmark which doesn't appear to be in gc.com's list. What should I do? We were there! I liked the one with the cards, and the ace up the sleeve! The octopus eating the pier was pretty cool too. Yeah, those were ok, I suppose. But for some reason, I found myself spending a lot of time looking at these sculpted lines . . . Edited July 26, 2006 by Snake & Rooster Quote Link to comment

+TrailGators
San Diego's Consensus Favorites! Miragee and I worked together to compile a list of caches that took everyone's favorite caches and combined them into one list! So it basically a consensus of the most enjoyable caches in the San Diego area! It took at least 3 votes to be included on the list. The caches are in order of those that appeared on the most favorites lists! You can see the number of favorite bookmarks a cache was on by simple subtracting the index number from 100 (thanks to TFTC for that idea!). Note that it is a work in progress. I will update the list every so often but it is a manual process so please be patient. Hopefully this list will entice everyone else to share a bookmark list of their own favorites caches in San Diego so we can include those to this list! P.S. Please post any needed updates here! Aug 19-20 is good or 26-27 I would lean towards 26-27 Keep us in the loop I think last time I checked the gate the island closed at 10pm They have a bunch of rules listed at this web site http://www.sandiego.gov/lifeguards/beaches/mbay.shtml Large Groups: The basic rule of thumb is that any gathering of over 75 people requires a permit from the Park and Recreation Department. A permit is also required for a wedding, water event, athletic event, voice and/or music amplification, or use of special setup equipment (such as an inflatable party jump, dunk tank, canopy, etc.) For permit information call Regional Parks at (619) 235-1169 Quote Link to comment

Can you spare a couple minutes and give me some direction on what programs are best and why?? Thanks!! Tony CacheMate with related math library at smittyware.com and GSAK at gsak.net. Good functionality, good support, and many knowledgeable local Geocachers that will help you through the setup process. Practically free at twenty-eight dollars for both installations. You will also want a good mapping software such as Garmin "City Navigator North America" (MapSource) or Magellan "MapSend Topo United States." You can get these locally from REI. You will still wind up printing maps to aid your power-outings. Edited July 27, 2006 by SD Rowdies Quote Link to comment

Can you spare a couple minutes and give me some direction on what programs are best and why?? I used GSAK and Cachemate. GSAK -- This runs on the PC at home (and the one at work )It'll let you manipulate cache information anyway you want -- Filter it almost anyway you want, change the names, etc. It'll export to just about anything on the planet (GPSrs, PocketPCs, Palms, GoogleEarth, map software, etc.) It does almost everything -- which is why it's called what it's called: Geocaching Swiss Army Knife. Cachemate -- I run this on both a Palm and a PocketPC (One is my phone, the other is the old reliable ancient Palm that I've always carried -- two different executables, but the $8 I paid for it covers both...) This is the tool I use in the field to record my logs (and to look up hints, when stumped...) Are these the best? I have no idea. These work good enough that I stopped looking... +Auld Pro
Hey folks, I would like to extend an invitation to an interested geocacher. I have a Wilderness camping permit for Thursday, Aug 10 (Thursday-Friday is my weekend) at Round Valley in the Mt San Jacinto Wilderness State Park for two. My hiking partner had to cancel. I am still going and if there is a backpacking cacher in the area who would care to join me I would enjoy the company. I am going to take the Tramway ($21.95 up and down) to Long Valley, overnight in Round Valley, up to the summit the next morning, then back down Friday afternoon. I will be looking for about 15 caches in Palm Springs, at the Tram Station, in the Wilderness area, and at the summit. You will need to provide your own gear and Tram fare. I can provide transportation to and from the Tram. If anyone is interested go to my profile and send me an email. Note: I am not too proficient in Forum use. I mistakenly started this as a new topic but I wanted to post it to the San Diego Thread. I see I messed up, so here is the San Diego Thread post also. Quote Link to comment
