  1. We pitch our tent at Skillet's place in the desert and go caching from there!! The only time I pitch a tent is at the caching campouts. We have one coming up next month - you do know about the event, don't you? Camping, Caching.. when - where.. really???? Can I, can I, pleassssssssse??? Seriously. No idea this was gonna happen. If we can fit it in the schedule and it's kid friendly, I'd love to go. Mary
  2. Hey! Maybe we need an event just for Harmon....a kind of 'bake - off' dessert event. Actually, it would be kind of fun. Desserts. Im there. I love desserts. And I can bake too. Go ahead gimmie an excuse. Mary
  3. Great pics up there. I'm looking for some things closer to home. Laguna, Cuyamaca type stuff. We have a Dodge Dakota so the serious 4WD stuff is a little out of our league. This is after all a street use vehicle too. I was thinking Kitchen Creek Rd, Thing Valley Rd would be doable. We've been through those areas quite a bit already. Most of our found caches are on the Otay Truck Trail although more toward the Jamul end. So we have some left to do on the Otay end. I am planning a camping weekend. Trying to decide between Cuyamaca and Laguna. I dont' remember but it seems like ther are no driving areas in Laguna, just hiking. Personally I like the hiking but the 3 kids (ages 2, 5, 8) are lets say a PAIN. Gotta get them started sometime.
  4. 4 of the top 5 for the DAK Girls! Nice going. Thanks for the list Pat, pretty cool......now if you'd made them all hyperlinks so we could all just click them from here..... Or, if someone would make them into a bookmark list... couldn't we then do a pocket query of them to see where they were all located?
  5. I totally agree. My family gets a bit cranky when I make them walk. I was thinking maybe I was just not finding them yet... Hopefully they will start to show up here soon. There are supposed to be some very good ones up in Big Bear. 3+ hour drive for me. Maybe a camping trip will get me there. Mary
  6. For the most part I think I'm getting it. And hey if I'm wrong who cares it's working for me. LMAO Once I create my pocket queries, and get them loaded into GSAK as well as my GPS, what is the easiest way to remove a selcet group of files from my gps? I get how to filter and remove in GSAK but other than deleting everything on the gps and starting over, or deleting one at a time, I'm not quite sure what to do. Is there another option that I'm missing? Mary
  7. Mt. Laguna or the Beach We recently trailer camped at Laguna campground and cached some nearby caches. It was cooler than most of San Diego, but warmer than the beach. We reserved our site at http://www.reserveusa.com/ which is a must for weekends. If you tent camp, either THE Laguna or Burnt Ranchita campgrounds would work. If you go mid-week, you don't need reservations, we stayed an extra day and had the campground to ourselves. Excellent info ty so much.
  8. Mt. Laguna or the Beach Anywhere paticular in Laguna better than the rest?
  9. It's been a while since we've gone camping. Lived in San Diego for ever though... Any thoughts on best places to camp for a weekend (1st weekend of August) where we will have some good caches? Don't want to go somewhere so hot that daytime activities will be out of the question (kids to consider). Mary
  10. Last time I checked, being in posession of projectiles (e.g. rocks) is not the same thing as being unarmed...perhaps someone's been swimming the shallow end of the gene pool? ROFLMAO Gotta tell a story... Went camping out at Kitchen Creek a few years ago. Guy from La Mesa was camping across the road from us (we were on the creek side between the parking area and bridge that goes across - he was by where the host usually is). He was sitting next to his fire pit in a low chair, with a can of white gas... ...yes you can figure the rest. When the can started expanding, he picked it up, it was hot so he threw it towards the road. Unfortunatly (I think) the lid was still open and it caught fire. So as it flew through the air it left a trail of fire. No worries. The can landed in the street so the only fire risk left was the trail of fire that was over the ground. A few shovels and some dirt fixed that proble. But geesh... I was sad to say he was from San Diego.
  11. Well since we are new to all of this we are still getting adjusted. We have a GeoVehicle and a GeoBag. lol In the Truck: First Aid Kit Cooler with H20 A survivor pack that's been in there forever and never used (reflective blanket and all) Hunting Knife Trash bags TP or at least paper towles Diapers (kid size) In the GeoBag: Snacks 2 way radios GPS pens/pencils Reading Material (always with me - it's what I do...) Palm Pilot Stuff to trade Keep forgetting: Baby Wipes Digital Camera
  12. Google Earth is awsome. Its free, when you get it take a look at the grand canyon tour! Mary
  13. Why suffer a step at a time when you can jump in and get it over with (deep end of the pool sink or swim). LMAO. Honestly I think I mostly got ahead of myself. Seeing the stuff I could do with a premium membership and now waiting for it to go through... Daddy I want IT NOW (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). Happy Swimming, I mean caching. LOL If this isn't the best game for electronic dorks I don't know what is! Happy 4th.
  14. If you clcik on page until you get to waypoint you can use the joystick to move through the different areas. Once yo uare on the area you want to change (name, coordicates, etc) push down on the joystick. That would be straight down or in as the case may be. That will select it and bring up a box with the abc's so that you can enter in your new information. It should be fairly easy to use your quickstart guide. Walk VERY slowly as you get below 20 feet. Circle ournd your spot and you'll get a feel for the area the cache is in. GL Mary
  15. http://www.garmin.com/products/etrexVenturecx/ Use Amazon.com and Shopping.yahoo.com for the best prices. Compare to what you find locally. I typed GPS Venture in the Amazon search and it came up with the right unit first try. Mary
  16. So many points to consider... I just got done with this whole thing so let me share what I discovered... Consider the features that you want not the brand. The features will set them apart. Maybe the easiest choice... external antenna or no? I have been told that Magellan and Garmin are the two best. Many Garmin models have a quad-helix receiving antenna. More on this item later. Do you want it to connect to your PC/MAC? Do you care if it is a serial or usb connection? Do you want a compass or altimeter? Usage - just for local caching, or will you use it for navigation as well during travels/journeys/trips? All of the units have different amounts of internal memory. Some of them allow for external memory cards (like the ones you use in a digital camera) Personal choices for me: I might drive long distances (other states) and would like to have fairly detailed maps when I go. For me more memory is better. My serial ports are a pain in the butt to get to, usb is better for me. My husband HAD to have a compass. Now I am one of those impatient instant gratification type people. I spent 3 days looking online, and going to a few stores, (Wal-Mart, Big 5, Circuit City, Cabela's, REI, Sears, Best Buy, Office Depot, Staples, Amazon.com, Yahoo Shopping to find a unit). Most of the stores carried the very low end or $600 types. I knew those were not for me. I did however come across the Garmin Legend for a decent price. I brought it home and the next night went to find my fist cache with family. We DNF 2/2. So user error, or technical difficulty?? Answer is both. After enlisting the help of my father in-law, we returned to the site of the elusive caches with GPSr's in hand. He has a Garmin GPSMap 60cs. I was able to compare the Legend to the 60cs and decided within about 10 min that the 60cs was worth the extra $100 for us. Comparisons: Satellite P/U Legend would have 6 satellites when dads had 8. This means that his area of accuracy was better than ours. We would be accurate within 60 feet and he was accurate within 35. More satellites more accurate. The Legend was less responsive - actually the response time was slower. We had to walk a lot slower for the satellites to keep up when we were within our area of accuracy. Was fine 300 feet away on both but when we got close ours was harder to navigate with. The Legend has a serial cable, and no external memory. I was going for cheaper and decided just wasn't worth it for me personally. So, I went to yahoo, found the cheapest 60cs I could find and bought it. It is supposed to be delivered tomorrow and it cost less with shipping that any of the locations I could find locally. Locally it was $299. I paid $251 total. I just had to wait for it - and borrow dads for the 4th's treasure hunt party. Good Luck. Mary
  17. Well Ive always hated coming up with email address, screen names, and the like. I want something funny, imaginative, descriptive... and doesn't get outdated every time Ichange my hair color... hmmm. So Team J.A.R. - its a family thing. We cache with my in-laws. My father in law, brother in-law, and youngest son all have the initials J.A.R. Now I'm trying to come up with something cool for my personal sn so we can use the other for a title.
  18. ROFL My evil computer nerd gene is showing isn't it??? I did hand enter my first few. On Saturday I spent all day (and I mean all day) entereing coordinates into google earth so I could easily see my map and the roads we would be taking. I then copied and pasted the Cache name, corrdinates, description and hint (encrypeted of course) to a word document. This allowed me to get the info on 17 caches on to 4 sheets of apper. I am down to green and black ink so I'm trying to conserve. About half way through the day my evil computer nerd gene decided there had to be a better way. Of course there is so I upgraded my membership, realized it was not instant, and kept copying. The area that we are doing tomorrow covers quite a bit of teritory and its an area that we frequent (even before the addiction of geocaching!) so we wanted to get as many points as we could. We have 4WD but our companions do not. We will be re-visinting for the harder areas I'm sure. Now I'm in between both worlds. My brain goes to the bigger solutions (more info, more transfers, less data entry, automated.. automated.. automated). Unfortunatly I'm just not caught up yet. This is how I ended up learning to program HTML pages and ACCESS. That evil gene knows there has got to be an eaiser way. Now I know too mcuh to go back. I truly am one of those people that knows just enough to get myself into trouble and not enough to get out of it! I'm better off when I don't knwo what I am missing. Mary - now if only my upgrade would go through, It will prolly happen Wednesday (also the day I am supposed to get my very own GPSr).
  19. TY so much. Glad I asked all my questions! Mary
  20. Very good. Thank You! Looks like I need to wait for my membership to go through. Going to dl GSAK. Thanks for the answers. Mary
  21. Oh when I fially imported the loc file into MapSource my waypoints showed up with their GC name. Will this get resolved when I start downloading in GPX format? Right now I can only seem to be able to download in loc. Am I doing something wrong or do I just need to wait until my premium membership is activated? Mary
  22. Wow thanks for the quick response. I will check out all the links you gave me. I just figured out how to get the loc files into MapSource (Trip & Waypoint Manager - newest version from Garmin site). When you say that I can export in the correct format for my palm, what is the correct format and where am I exporting it from? And yes, addicted is putting it mildly.
  23. Usually I do good reading other posts. searching forums and getting answers to my questions. Right now my brain hurts and I'm getting frustrated. So... just gonna ask for help from the experts! Lets see... so far we have bought and returned the Garmin Legend (just didn't care for it). We have now purchased, and are still waiting for delivery on, the Garmin GPS60cs. Since I am too impatient, and want to play tomorrow, we borrowed my in-laws unit (GPS 60). So all is good, right?? LOL Sort of. After getting my unused Pal Pilot Zire31 to work (dl new software, reboot a few times) lots of fun, I downloaded and paid for Cachemate. I also paid for and am waiting for my premium membership on geocaching.com. So here's what I have: Windows XP Garmin GPSmap 60cs (MapSource installed on PC) Palm Pilot Zire31 (with CacheMate) Basic membership (upgrade to premium pending) Oh and Google Earth with my trips waypoints manually entered. My issues: (Ill stick the the gps related ones ) 1. How to get waypoints onto my GPS. (Can I get them out of google earth into map source?) MapSource doesn't seem to want to take LOC files. Do I have to wait for my premium membership so that I can do pocket querries? 2. How to get all the info (not just basic) into my palm pilot. With the converted loc file I don't get the description or hint. I think i've got he rest of the basics. I'll tackle routes, pocket querries, and whtever else when my brian stops hurting. Thanks for the help, Mary (Team J.A.R.)
