Geocaching, photography... and animals.

Recommended Posts

I was caching yesterday and on the way back to my car I decided to take a pic of the nearby creek. As I stepped off the trail, I accidentally stumbled upon a nesting duck. The duck scared the beejeebers outta me  Anyway, he left behind an even better pic to post in my log.

Duck eggs!

That's so cool. I've never seen duck eggs in the wild.

That reminds me - when I was younger, we lived for a while at a place that had a pond. We had a couple White Pekin ducks for eggs (sigh, I miss duck eggs). They bred with wild Mallards that came in to enjoy our pond. We had a bunch of duck mutts running around after that. They were quite attached to us, more so than the White Pekins, probably because they were handled by us right out of the eggs.

The most interesting picture I might have taken was when my daughter and I rounded a bend in the trail and there were two rattlesnakes, staring at each other and trying to see which one would be the tallest. It might have been the only time I have been hiking or caching without some kind of camera. But Moose (as we were on the way to an earthcache) or Tule Elk (a locationless cache for me back in the day) are always photogenic.

This was a great encounter! It met this marmot on the way to the cache GC1ZQY2 - Schwarzenberghütte.

I didn't find the cache, but it was a great walk about 10 km through a stunning mountain area.

I have a few others on my profile, and more picture on my photography page. It seems like whenever I run into a deer or something more interesting than a bird my camera is away, and in my bag, I have no time to get it before the creature runs away. :(

A few more photos near the cache at Mikumi National Park in Tanzania

About a half mile before the entrance of the park

I forgot my pen. None in the cache. I tried the old chlorophyll trick (leaf and key), but that didn't work on moist paper. Hmm, how can I leave my mark?

Then a little idea bit me on the arm...

While there was a noticeable lack of caches on the Albion River, I used this photo for a cache near the kayak launch. Fish for Lunch:

Found these lounging seals while boating early in the morning on the puget sound. I like the lighting, because the town had been completely obscured by grey fog before taking this picture. The sun is casting a warm color on the buoy, and just starting to burn off the fog, leaving the city almost colorless.

We went down to Moss Landing and a Morning on the Beach, but the real attraction were the whales. Whales breaching ten feet away, diving, the smells and sounds of whale breath. Not to mention jellies, otters, sea lions, and thousands of birds...

Wow, I'm jealous. I live far away from the sea. Great pictures!
