jthurle2
We usually pass a buoy or two while cruising on the lake , I think it would be cool to hide a cach on a buoy or even a lighthouse . My husband thinks I'm crazy? Any thoughts on this ? Has anyone ever searched for a cach while boating? Would be interested in what people think, maybe I am crazy! Quote Link to comment
+simpjkee
There are caches around lakes in AZ that require boating or suggest boating as the best method of finding them. I know of one that requires scuba gear to reach and another that is on a rock island in the middle of the lake. I have never boated to a cache, but I hope to change that soon. I don't know of any that are connected to a buoy or lighthouse. Quote Link to comment
+cerberus1
I don't believe buoys are free to tie to, other than mooring buoys and most lighthouses are either Park Service/State Park Property or privatly owned. - But there are many boat hides. We have one. Search either for the boat attribute or caches with a 4+ in terrain. Quote Link to comment
+Mr. Wilson & a Mt. Goat
If it was a buoy for a swimming area, I'm sure you'd be fine, I've found a few like this... but having said this, you don't want to bring a boat around there. Like cerberus1 said, I don't think many buoys are free to attach stuff to, unless you get permission. Quote Link to comment
Keystone
Geocache placements must comply with all applicable laws. Be sure to check the laws and regulations governing interference/tampering with a navigational aid. For example, I would not publish a cache hidden on a navigational aid maintained by the United States Coast Guard. For the lake you have in mind, your mileage may vary. Quote Link to comment
+T.D.M.22
We have (Had??) one around here. We have a swimming pond and it's 6 feet the drops down. The put a buoy where it drops down to something deeper. There is a cache on the cement block that holds the buoy in place. Or at least I think it's there(haven't found it) There's also This Cache Quote Link to comment
+releasethedogs
lots like that in San Diego. Quote Link to comment

I see that you live near Lake Ontario, so I guessing that when you say 'the lake', it is Ontario that you are referring to. Most buoys that are in navigable waters, such as Lake Ontario, you had best consider them as USCG property... unless you know positively otherwise -- even then, somebody owns or is responsible for it. Permission is the key. Edited February 19, 2013 by Gitchee-Gummee Quote Link to comment
+Andromeda321
Usually you're not allowed to attach things to buoys because the powers that be don't want you tampering with them. That said I've found many caches in a lake, on islands! Quote Link to comment
+MartyBartfast
Not exactly a lighthouse or a buoy but there's a cache at Red Sands Fort just off the coast of the UK:- Quote Link to comment
+cerberus1
Very cool. Looks like it could be a scene for another Mad Max movie. Quote Link to comment
+BBWolf+3Pigs
Very cool. Looks like it could be a scene for another Mad Max movie. Or a sequel to Water World. (just joking...they shouldn't have made the first one!) Quote Link to comment
Mr.Yuck
Very cool. Looks like it could be a scene for another Mad Max movie. Yes, very cool. I vaguely think I stumbled on info on those forts while surfing the web. I'm much more familiar with Mirconation of Sealand Someone should ask them if they want to host a cache. I'll bet they would, they seem to like to promote themselves. Like with all the "official Sealand Merchandise" on the bottom of the page. Quote Link to comment
+J Grouchy
I was recently in Reno visiting family and saw this one pop up on my screen: Phantom at a Fathom I don't know exactly what the setup is since we didn't go for it, but since the description says 'no swimming involved' I gather there is some sort of buoy or floating object attached to the cache. +Danbike_Lizbike
We had the help of a friend who dives and placed one 110' down about 1 mile off shore in Lake Michigan. Only one find. Quote Link to comment

jthurle2
I guess I will have to give up this idea of setting a cach out on the water. Maybe on the beach or at the marina Quote Link to comment
