> Geocaching.com Scheduled Downtime - Feb 23, 2010, Database Upgrades

Recommended Posts

On Tuesday, February 23rd starting at 8 PM Pacific Time (GMT -8), we'll be performing upgrades to the Geocaching.com database server in preparation for the increase in Geocaching over the spring and summer months.

The expected downtime for this work is 4 hours and during that time, all Geocaching.com services including the web site, Pocket Queries, the Geocaching iPhone application, Geocache Navigator, and other 3rd party applications that access our API, will be inaccessible.

We'll have a webpage set up on the Geocaching site with this downtime notice and we'll provide status updates if the downtime exceeds the 4 hour maintenance window. We'll also post updates to this forum thread as well.

Thanks,

look on the bright side ;) they're preparing for the busy summer period, So that a couple of hours now that you can't access GC :) will mean that you don't face what used to be a regular experience

The database crashing due to the extremely high work load, meant the servers could not cope. Something those who have been members for years will remember with horror  Something we don't see now days

Also their backing up the database, which from the sounds of it, its a extensive backup and not the usual backup that is taken. In all the time I've been a member [and that goes way back to 2002  ] I can't remember anyone ever complaining that their cache data had been lost. That's because Groundspeak Staff work extremely hard to insure it does not happen.

So a few hours of no access is a small price to pay for that.

And I do believe it does say all Groundspeak sites on the current landing page <_<

Oh and Maintenance is usually at the time of the lowest level of hits to the Database, which is about 08:00 GMT.
