+talkytoaster
Another week another update... For all those interested: I have just compiled the latest GB/Ireland map tiles with contours into new maps for the Garmin GPSrs. The GB mapsets I compile include the following areas: England Wales Scotland Isle of Man Channel Islands The Ireland mapsets I compile include the following areas: Northern Ireland Republic of Ireland Both the full GB/Ireland mapsets come with contour data [contour data is from the Scottish Mountaineering Club] and are now routable. The updated ones are prefixed with 100223 [the old ones are prefixed with 100216] and should be available on the following link as of now. These new ones include all changes made to the OSM mapping data up to the 22nd of February 2010. If you want to grab them then you can find them here: http://sites.google.com/site/talkytoasteruk/ukmaps As these are new, please report any problems directly to me, via my profile on Geocaching.com or via my Gmail account [talkytoasteruk@googlemail.com]. All the maps have been either been tested on a Garmin Oregon 200 or checked in GPSMapEdit on a Windows PC (just to ensure they load and render). This update not only includes newer routable versions with contours for GB/Ireland, but also routable versions without contour data (I have had several requests for this). More details about the routing features can be found in the FAQ on my site. I now have workable versions of the GB & Ireland mapsets which are compatible with MapSource, and have also been tested in MapSource before release. Details can be found here: http://sites.google.com/site/talkytoasteru...ree-uk-maps-faq and the maps here: http://sites.google.com/site/talkytoasteruk/ukmaps This should allow those that have Garmin GPSrs with limited memory to select small areas to upload to these devices complete with contour data. If anyone wants similar maps (without contours) for other parts of Europe or elsewhere, then please feel free to contact me to discuss your needs. CAVEAT: No mapping solution is perfect. From OpenStreetMap:- "By the very nature of the wiki-style process there is no guarantee of accuracy of any kind. Then again, few proprietary maps carry a guarantee of accuracy, either. In fact, some have artificially-introduced errors." Furthermore, I and others have already confirmed this with even GB OS maps; deliberate errors and moved paths (some from 10 years or more after the change was documented by the local council/county are not reflected on the latest OS maps). Not everything is accurately mapped, even on 1:25K. All maps should be considered a guide and not a factual statement. To participate and help improve the maps you just need to go to http://www.openstreetmap.org; create an account, upload your tracks from your GPSr and then edit the maps. Help on how to do this can be found on the OpenStreetMap site. The contour data is from The Scottish Mountaineering Club, more details about them can be found here: http://www.smc.org.uk/ContourMaps.php I have tested these maps on a Garmin Oregon 200 [the full GB & Ireland versions with contour data] and also on a computer using GPSMapEdit and in MapSource for those versions designed for use with it to ensure that they load and render as expected. I do not test all the map data or functions as this is not possible in a reasonable time-frame. Hope this helps? Regards, Martin Quote Link to comment
+Cache U Nutter
[ hope you find them useful? Regards, Martin Useful .... They were brilliant ! Have just spent a day in Bath and the step by step guidance was as good as my Tom Tom. The contours and footpath inclusions so much better than the original Garmin base map. Martin also down loaded European Piste maps for me ... Which were Crap ! the scale and speed of travel renders them useless on the mountain unless for some reason you got lost off piste -say in a white out. Quote Link to comment
+rob.marsh
Is there a way of breaking the map down into custom tiles within mapsource rather than the perset ones? I only have 8mb of memory and occasionally find that the areas i want span two tiles but the two tiles exceed my memory capacity on the gps. I have tried using gpsmapedit i think its called, but it runs really clunky on my machine and crashes when I try to export a custome area. Quote Link to comment
+talkytoaster
Hi Rob, Is there a way of breaking the map down into custom tiles within mapsource rather than the perset ones? I only have 8mb of memory and occasionally find that the areas i want span two tiles but the two tiles exceed my memory capacity on the gps. I have tried using gpsmapedit i think its called, but it runs really clunky on my machine and crashes when I try to export a custome area. As far as I know there is no easy way to do what you want; Mapsource and most mapping tools work at specific or pre-defined tile sizes. Regards, Martin Quote Link to comment

+Kelt.
Martin. Thanks for all the hard work. I wish I'd known about this before I purchased the Europe mapset from Garmin, but I was in the US and in need of comfort before I left. Questions: (open to all viewers) How does your mapset compare to Garmins? does it have the same amount of detail? I guess I could strip out the Garmin version and load yours, then compare, but would like a few opinions first. What differences should i expect if I move over.. I did already load the GB mapsource files, but don't know where to load them (yes I did already load MapTk). any hints would be welcome. Thanks Kelt. Quote Link to comment

Kelt, You'll find that GB Mapsource has very few footpaths on. Clearly, in England and Wales, it's very difficult to cache without knowing where footpaths are because there is no automatic right to walk where we please. OpenStreetMap maps have many of the footpaths (and every time i download a new map, there are more!) Also, because it's constantly updated by real people, it's much more up to date (2 new mini-roundabouts near me appeared on OSM the day after they were build) Stu Quote Link to comment
+talkytoaster
I did already load the GB mapsource files, but don't know where to load them (yes I did already load MapTk). Everything you need to know (well most things ) on installing the mapsource version of the OSM mapsets I compile can be found in the TEXT file in the zip; see the description on my site (copied below): "GB Map (With Contours) - Routable For use in Mapsource only! See the Mapsource-GB+Contours.txt file in the zip file for instructions." Simples... Regards, Martin Edited May 10, 2010 by talkytoaster Quote Link to comment
Sagina nivalis
These are brilliant. I routinely use them as my main nav aid in the mountains (admittedly I take a map if I'm doing something a bit complicated or long...) I could wish that the 10m contour interval comes in at maybe 300m instead of 120m, if it's possible, maybe on a trial basis? Rob Quote Link to comment
+talkytoaster
Another week another update... even on my Birthday week For all those interested: I have just compiled the latest GB/Ireland map tiles with contours into new maps for the Garmin GPSrs. The updated ones are prefixed with 100511 [the old ones are prefixed with 100504] and should be available on the following link as of now. These new ones include all changes made to the OSM mapping data up to the 11th of May 2010. If you want to grab them then you can find them here: http://talkytoaster.info As these are new, please report any problems directly to me, via my profile on Geocaching.com or via my Gmail account [talkytoasteruk@googlemail.com]. Details and the maps can be found here: http://talkytoaster.info/ukmaps.htm This should allow those that have Garmin GPSrs with limited memory to select small areas to upload to these devices complete with contour data. If anyone wants similar maps (with or without contours) for other parts of Europe or elsewhere, then please feel free to contact me to discuss your needs. PLEASE NOTE: The maps are now hosted on a dedicated site rather than DropBox and Googlesites. Regards, Martin Quote Link to comment

Not sure how I could do this, if anyone knows, then please feel free to contact me. Bear in mind the the countours are pre-compiled by the Scottish Mountaineering Club. Unless I can change the data elsewhere then I suspect that this won't be do-able. Regards, Martin Quote Link to comment
+Madproforg
It is possible to adjust the zoom levels using the data The Scottish Mountaineering Club. After playing around a little I've managed to create a modified version with the 10m contours appearing at 300m in mapsource, haven't tried them on the GPS yet. For each of the 14*.img file I followed these steps Open the file in GPSMapEdit Save as .mp (Polish format) file Open the .mp file in a text editor, change Level0=24 to Level0=23 NB: this could be done in GPSMapEdit in the Map Properties before saving and there is no need to do this for the 149*.img files as they are the POI's rather than the contours Once all the .img files have been converted to .mp, compile the .mp file back into a .img with cgpsmapper If you want to replace the original data you should just be able to copy the new .img files over the top. I didn't want to do this so had to do a few more steps. Create a copy of test_pv.txt and edited it to change the name and ProductCode so it doesn't overwrite/override the originals Compile this with cpreview (comes with cgpsmapper). Compile the .mp file this produces with cgpsmapper to create the overview map. FINALLY, edit the .reg file to point at the files so it can be added to MapSource It does take a little bit of time, but should only need be to done once. Hope this helps. +watsonic
Bit of a problem moving from 'GB+Contours' to 'UK+Contours' in MapSource. Having taken a couple of hours to perform an unnecesssary reinstall of MapSource and trying to modify the .bat file, the less-than-obvious solution was to uninstall the GB version ('uninstall.bat' in 100504 or any earlier download) and install the latest UK version. D'uh. The OSM maps are still brilliant. Thanks, Martin. Quote Link to comment

Got it here working fine alongside the old GB mapsets. Hope this helps? Regards, Martin Edited June 6, 2010 by talkytoaster Quote Link to comment

Versions for Mac OSX (RoadTrip/BaseCamp) are also available. The contour data is from The Scottish Mountaineering Club, more details about them can be found here: http://www.smc.org.uk/ContourMaps.php I have tested these maps on a Garmin Oregon 200 [the full UK & Ireland versions with contour data] and also on a computer using GPSMapEdit and in MapSource/BaseCamp for those versions designed for use with it to ensure that they load and render as expected. I do not test all the map data or functions as this is not possible in a reasonable time-frame. Hope this helps? +needaxeo
All feedback and comments are most welcome. I was very impressed that these maps navigated turn-by-turn around Milton Keynes Redway. I wasn't expecting it (and I'd been googling around for some kind of "sustrans in garmin format" without much success) Most of the caches we've done have either been local or on country footpaths, and I've overlayed an OS custom map at 1:50k of most of the area the PQ "500 nearest" covers, and I'd just been looking for the footpath using the 'as the crow flies' line between me and the cache to get the direction. On Sunday, I decided to go and find a few caches I could cycle to. I was sat on my bike at Caldecotte lake and I hit 'recalculate on road' just for laughs, to see what death defying route via MK's roundabouts and dual carriageways it would give me. Instead I got 'go E on trail to redway...' and a complete off road route (bar a couple of very quiet side streets / cul-de-sacs) I had to use a bit of intelligence to navigate back across MK towards home (It wanted to send me down the road to LB) but once I'd navigated back to Caldecotte Lake it sent me down the canal towpath. +The Other Stu
OK, I'll admit defeat. I have 2 different versions of TT maps on our 2 Colorados. The Tigers shows caches on the maps. Mine doesn't. It only shows caches on the base map when I've turned these maps off. What am I doing wrong? Or should I use this map for the base map and not have any additional maps? Quote Link to comment

Some suggestions: Tried updating the maps on the Colorado that is being awkward? Got the latest firmware on the Colorado that is being awkward? Checked all the settings are the same on both Colorados? Let me know if you get to the bottom of this mystery? Regards, Martin Quote Link to comment

All feedback and comments are most welcome. Also, I am now hosting the UK Geocaching Records that were originally hosted/maintained by Mongoose39uk There probably won't be any new maps next week as I'm away on business in France.
