  1. Like it says on the box, I'm looking for parts, well, specifically one part. The PCB cover, part # 145-00767-00 . I'm striking out everywhere I know to look. I'd probably need 2 as I'm a clutz. Can they be 3D printed? I'd gladly purchase a broken/inoperative 60 series just for the pcb cover, and maybe the unworn button cover TIA
  2. Hi, I just got a Geomate Jr Cache finder, and was wondering ahead of time if anyone knows whether it is absolutely necessary to use the proprietary cable kit for updating. We all know the pain of multiple cable formats and I for one resist purchasing yet another cable for my tech stuff if it is actually in the same format as my camera sync cable or my phone charger/sync cable. So, has anyone used a standard (non-proprietary) connection cable to update their GeomateJr?
  3. I use a 60CSx and still have not discovered how to set multiple proximity alerts (or a general alert for all caches if they are in range) for my POI loaded caches I hope I have explained this correctly: I use POI's as my cache locations (coz I can get thousands loaded at once) and I would like the Proximity alarm to sound when I am near any of them. Can this be done?
  4. There is a thriving community of cachers in Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall. The easiest way to find them is host a very simple event in a pub (or something like that) and they will all come to you It sounds like there's an opportunity to get a Plymouth-based forum started.
  5. Hi there, I'm originally from the Southwest of England, and have returned to Plymouth after many many years in <cough> the Colonies <cough> ('Gee folks, that's the USofA to ya'll") Despite my accent I love caching on Dartmoor and urban environments as well, but have as yet to find any group or forum for fellow Plymothians or West Devonians. Is there such a beast? Answers on a postcard, or better yet, right here thanks
  6. Martin. Thanks for all the hard work. I wish I'd known about this before I purchased the Europe mapset from Garmin, but I was in the US and in need of comfort before I left. Questions: (open to all viewers) How does your mapset compare to Garmins? does it have the same amount of detail? I guess I could strip out the Garmin version and load yours, then compare, but would like a few opinions first. What differences should i expect if I move over.. I did already load the GB mapsource files, but don't know where to load them (yes I did already load MapTk). any hints would be welcome. Thanks Kelt.
  7. some of it is in the POI loader helpfile, but there's better info on one of the GSAK macros help thread. HERE This macro worked best of all solutions. It does still require POI loader, and has issues with proximity alerts, but after trying proximity alerts in the field I found them annoying. Generally I know when I'm in the area because that's the reason I'm there Thanks for the input
  8. Okay, I leaped before I looked. The new GSAK has an "export Garmin POI" function, that DOES export POI's However, the are in the .gpi format and also must be hand-moved (using explorer and the 60CSx in USB mode) Also there is the Export GPX mode, which generates a .gpx format which is seen by POI Loader and therefore may be acted upon by using the "Manual" loading, where I may set a proximity for all POI's in that file. Strangely though, in the GArmin POI exporter (.gpi fomat) I can elect to add cache information as well as proximity data, but that additional information does not show up on the POI page after it has transferred, only the proximity settings show up. It appears that the other method also creates results that are similar (lacking any information other than the proximity data) In the grand scheme of things it's not a big deal, I use Cachemate on my smartphone for cahche information, and my original question to the forum has been answered. Any information as to the missing additional information would be welcome though. Thanks Kelt.
  9. OOPS, It's a 60CSx, I'm generating a .gpi file using GSAK and then mounting the GPSr using USB , and transferring the .gpi file using Windows Explorer. Perhaps you expect that I know a lot more than I do. I was referring to the proximity alarm that I can make using the GPSr's menus, not one written into the .gpi file (you can do that? cool)
  10. I've searched through the forums and now it's diminishing returns time (faster to ask and go do something else with my day) I've loaded over 500 caches into my POI folder, and they show up as expected in the Custom POI . I can write a proximity alert for a single POI with no trouble, but cannot figure out how to make a single Proximity alert that will act on all 500+ in one go. All I want is for my GPS to beep if I'm within 2500 feet of a cache. That's a lot of button presses if I have to write one for each cache. Please show me how.
  11. That is exactly what this macro is designed to do: http://www.gsak.net/board/index.php?act=At...e=post&id=11398 Pasha created it, and will help you configure it if you need additional help. Check out this thread: http://www.gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=1825. Good luck! Kelt.

Your enjoyment really depends on your preferences... The Nomad sets some fiendish PuzzleCaches... both Overrover and Hiddenrock have set some great multis and lovely places to visit. Other favourites of mine are anything by the Geezers (CondoMax and Zbeard) or Team Geoduck, and let's not forget Jackie and Bob, and certainly not forget Clan Riffster and his hilarious day long Multi, Great Scott! (A Riffsters' Tale) or his night cache The Etch O Sketch Night Cache What are you looking for?..speedy numbers, pretty walks..or mind bending puzzles..there's some of each of those here. Drop us a line and we'd be happy to host/chauffeur/welcome P.S. Navi is a Teacher as well as a cacher and quite sporty to boot! Kelt
  13. I am a hiker, not a geocacher, but the issue is the same: I want to drive to the start of the hike, then hike up the mountain. I find that using the directions to the start of the hike, plus paper maps, plus my GPSr with TOPO software, is all I need. Sure, not all roads are shown, but enough of them that I really do not see the need to buy automotive software. Of course, I know how to navigate the roads with a road atlas, but the TOPO software helps me quite a bit. If, however, you need. or even want (not the same thing!!) to be led from your home to the parking area you will need to buy one of the auto products. When you all say "TOPO Software", I am assuming you are using Garmin's US Topo software to upload to the GPSr device, correct? I just purchased my first GPS Garmin 60CSx and determined that there are no 1:24,000 Topo maps/software that can be transfered to the device. Garmin's Topo software has scale of only 1:100,000 which is pretty useless when I can get printed USGS topos with higher details. There are ways to create smaller scale topo maps that can be loaded onto your Garmin gpsr (and maybe other gpsr's too) Unless you have a really good grasp of data handling and GIS programs , the process is rather difficult .. I use a lot of surveying applications daily and am still grappling with the four or five programs needed to work seamlessly to create small-scale, zoomable, high definition topo maps. The results promise to be good.. in some cases better than 1:24000 scale , with trails, streams, water features, contours etc.. here's the link: CustomTopo maps good luck, if you succeed, please post a step by step , Idiot -proof guide . Kelt.
  14. Greetings, I've been watching this thread as it pertains to my new line of work as a researcher at a survey company. The whole business is new to me, but thankfully I have some very patient and talented teachers and supervisors. In your experience, are there any "must -have" applications for this field..I already use autocad LDD, and have a picture viewer that will handle .jp2 images (for DOQQ's). I'm in Florida, and am blessed with a site called LABINS ( www.labins.com) that collects lots of information in one place.. CCRs, GLO etc..., I'm beginning to learn how to collect data and change it into a format that can be uploaded to my handheld gpsr , but that's personal, albeit tied closely to the professional side of my life. So much to learn, and thankfully resources like this place to help me along.
  15. The image you wish to show in your post must first be hosted by a photo hosting service (or your own personal website) an example of a hosting service is photodump.com go there and check out the concept As to the software versions... dunno 'bout that yet
  16. pants, schmants..... unbifurcation rules! I wear my utilikilt just about anywhere, though I might choose my undergarments wisely for those colder days or the days with more burrs than grass... Loads of pockets, built in key clip, hammer holster that doubles as a gps sling/beerglass holder, best of all........ free flow airconditioning
  17. I'm about to purchase one of the CSx receivers and pass on my CS to my wife. I already own a copy of City Select, will I be able to use it on my new receiver as well as the existing one (multiple licences), or do I have to buy new software for the new hardware? Also does the Garmin 60 series have both the USB and the Serial connections? Kelt
  18. Do both come with the 4-pin NMEA/serial connector..can't seem to detrimine that on the Garmin website
  19. Thanks Impala Bob, I use a Palm One Treo, currently with Plucker to read the spun cache pages. Does Cachemate have a section for recording notes, comments or thoughts when you find a cache? I guess I'm not totally paperless, as I use a spiral bound notebook for my records, field notes etc. I can see benefits to both methods, I am certain that my handwritten notes will still be readable in twenty years, but appreciate the paperless, digital version as well Kelt
  20. I had no luck today, even though all my geocache icons were already loaded as closed treasure chests. Following the link to the FAQ page helped me this evening though... To clarify ALL the steps neccessary I have included the pertinent paragraph below: Thanks to the publishers of the FAQ page and their sources GEOCACHE: The manual isn't as clear as it could be for finding caches. For optimum use (and to call up the compass page, as the manual shows) if one in: Setup, Routing, sets Guidance Method and Follow Road Method to "Prompted", then when accessing a Geocache waypoint, you can select Off Road, and the compass page will appear. Also the waypoint selected must be a geocache waypoint. Thanks for leading me to the appropriate configuration, Happy Caching Kelt
  21. Thanks for the information, I'll try that today. My geocaches are already marked with the threasure chest, but I saw nothing in tha manual that indicated the "off road" selection was necessary to operate in geocaching mode. It makes sense though. Kelt
  22. Yes, they both have the geocaching mode feature. I've been trying to get my 76CS to operate in the Geocaching mode for a while now. I have followed the instructions in the manual, but the compass page does not display the geocaching information /buttons as shown in the pictures on page 37 of the manual. Are there more steps that I need to perform to get this function to work? Is there a firmware upgrade that I need to perform? Currently I edit my found Geocaches manually, and appear to have no log of them in the calendar, even though the "log in calendar" preference is selected Help Kelt
  23. Thanks for the info, I must be missing something though, I've yet to see the Geocaching mode, I've tried by selecting a cache, hitting "goto" and all I get is a route to the cache, no "Found " button Edit: I reread the manual, and attempted to enter the Geocache Navigation mode in exactly the manner indicated, but the Compass page only displays the compass ring and the data fields at the top. What do I do to enable this mode ? it's a GPSMap 76CS tia Kelt
  24. Hi, scrolling thru the setup menus for my 76CS I see an option for "Calendar Entry when found" in the Geocaching setup page. How does this work? How do I see the "found date" and does it transfer back to Mapsource? Does this really have a use, other than dating finds on the gpsr?... can it be used to log finds online? multi -part question, any hints appreciated Kelt
