Poi Loader For New Garmin "x" Series

Recommended Posts

everytime I think Im getting this figured out it comes back to bite me in the behind... got a new computer Yeah downloaded GSAK and I think the right POIloader tried to put some caches in to make sure Ive got it set up right and it told me it downloaded 470 POI's yet nothing is there???

You might be able to check which POI Loader version you have by going to Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Software, scrolling down to the Garmin POI Loader entry, and clicking the "Click here for support information" link - should pop up a little window telling you which version you've got installed. (Works for me on WinXP with POILoader 2.3.2) If you can't tell for sure whether you're running POI Loader 2.3.2 (the current version, released earlier this month) then you might want to just uninstall the one you have and get the current version from Garmin's POI Loader page - might be best to know for sure exactly which version you're dealing with, since some of the previous releases were a bit ...hmmm... "quirky"? :laughing:

Also, if you ran POILoader in "Express" mode, try it again using "Manual" mode and make sure it isn't turning your poor little points into alerts. (Whatever POI Loader defaults to in Manual mode is how it would treat the file in Express mode - so if Manual mode defaults to proximity alerts for your file, then Express mode was turning them into proximity alerts.)

second question... I couldnt find my original Mapsource disk but I did install my CSv7 and got it set up through Garmin is this going to be a problem??? should I be tearing up the house to find it or is that same info on CSv7??

Shouldn't be a problem - at worst you ended up with a newer version of MapSource than whatever came packaged with your GPSr. :) Still, it's probably not the newest version of MapSource - CSv7's been out for a while, and I think MapSource ver 6.11.3 only came out about 3-4 weeks ago. Just fire up MapSource, go to the "Help" menu, then select "Check for Software Update..." - that'll bring you up-to-date if you're not already running the most recent MapSource/CSv7.

app:poiloader

at:08/30/2006

os:windows xp service pack 2

WIN_FOUNDFILE.HPP-81-2.2.1

Windows error code:267

the directory name is invalid

HELLLLPPPP

ive tried using a different directory when exporting from GSAK but when I bring up the POILOADER it says theres nothing there

Hi all, I found solution of my problem with "None Found" message in list of Custom POIs (in my GPS Legend Cx, sw. 2.50)

It seems to be bug in Color schemes. I got this wrong message if I use Diamond, Emerald, Pearl, Sapphire and Topas scheme. If I switch to Amethyst, Aquamarine, Opal, Peridot or Ruby it's ok and I can see in "Custom POIs" list of all my POIs from all databases I imported.

I hope this'll help :tired:

Anyone get the TourGuide.mp3 function working? I have the 60csx and Proximity is on. I am playing around with the promity and speed options, but I am not hearing it yet. Isn't the POI loader suppose to move it to the MicroSD?

By the way, the past information on this board is awesome!

Not to cut in on the subject of the TourGuide.mp3 particularly, but I just wanted to relay this tech support reply to my question on POIs and proximity alarms. In part here is what I wrote to Garmin;

"I have gone through the Setup menu and changed every possible tone setting

but the proximity beep does not change. Is there any way to get a useful

(loud) proximity beep from my Custom POIs?

I'm using the most recent POI Loader v.2.3.2".

Here's their reply;

"Thank you for contacting Garmin,

I am sorry, there are no volume settings on the unit. I have no options for

increasing this. If you have any additional comments or questions, please do

not hesitate to contact us via email or call our customer service number

below.

Have a nice day"!

That helps a lot, and it applies to the 60CSx, too. My custom POIs suddenly disappeared from the "All Databases Near Current Location" FIND, although they could still be brought up with Menu > Select Database.

This was driving me freakin' crazy. I'd reloaded the POIs umpteen times, tried rebuilding the CSV files, even hard-resetting the receiver. I never noticed the glitch was tied to the day/night color schemes.

With a 60CSx (3.0), here's the lowdown on Find > Custom POI:

WORKS: Amethyst, Diamond, Emerald, Sapphire, Topaz.

FAILS: Aquamarine, Opal, Pearl, Peridot, Ruby.

Thanks, TantalCZ -- you just made my trip a lot better!

Wow ! tight up top the color scheme ??? This is frightening as these freatures are totally unrelated and give a scaring view of the way the programming is done !

Application software programmers have always seemed to me the least professional people in the technology field and this is an other proof. Imagine an airplane or a ballistic missile program built following the same lousy rules ? :)

...my problem with "None Found" message in list of Custom POIs...

I searched all over for answers -- sci.geo.satellite-nav, alt.satellite.gps.garmin, gpsinformation.net, the web at large, etc. Great to find the solution right here after joining just a week ago. In the interest of helping anyone else scouring the internet for this issue, here's a couple screenies:

Garmin 60CSx with software 3.0,

nothing changed but the color scheme -- sapphire to peridot:

Garmin60CSx-Sapphire.gifGarmin60CSx-Peridot.gif

On a 60CSx, the schemes that do not work are Aquamarine, Opal, Pearl, Peridot, Ruby.

Yes, I reported this to Garmin.

I'm glad that this help u and hope Garmin will repair it soon.

Seems that with another firmware and unit there're another bugged color schemes, interesting...

This is a great thread, but it's getting massive.

Would someone be willing to provide the step-by-step instructions to simply get geocache POIs (with hints) into the GPSr? There seem to be bits and pieces everywhere, but nothing complete. Thanks in advance!

Yes, this is a bug with the POI version 2.3.1

You can use the workaround I have given.

Where is this work around? I looked through the whole thread and did not see it. I also receive the unknown notices instead of seeing my hints and comments...

thanks,

…Would someone be willing to provide the step-by-step instructions to simply get geocache POIs (with hints) into the GPSr?…

well, here we are:

1. in gsak: filter the caches that should become pois

1a. create a poi folder where the files should exported to

2. run this macro -> HHL’s PoiMacro

2a. looks similar to this:

poi_eintrag.jpg

3. load the macro generated pois (i.e. csv files) with garmin poi loader from poi folder onto the unit.

4. be happy ;-)

ps: custom icons for corresponding poi files has to be bmp files (max size 22x22 pixel) named as the csv (i.e. tradi.csv = tradi.bmp)

happy hunting - the old fashioned way (trads only, exceptions may appear)

I just ran through this and it works great!! I like this filter beter than my attempt.. thanks for the information and steps! :D

Why use a macro????

From GSAK:

export

GPX/LOC file

In the "Waypoint Name" add in what you want. It will take up to 44 characters. I use "%name-%code"

In the "Cache Description Format" field add what you want up to 88 characters. I use "%con1-%hint=86"

Hello, everyone,

I've been here for a while but I guess this is my first post.

This is a great thread, I must say... although it took me some time to go through it.

I managed to upload some POI into my GPS (60Cx) based on your suggestions.

Searching on the Internet I found this web site - http://www.elsinga.net/poi-icons.html - where you can find a whole bunch of icons that you can associate with your POIs (mostly for speed limits - signs are the European format, not the North American).

Also, Garmin has a list of POI sources on their web site: http://www.garmin.com/products/poiloader/POISource/

And now, a question regarding geocache POIs.

I read that one can include the hint into the description field. I downloaded a couple of loc files from www.geocaching.com for testing purposes but I can't find anywhere the hint. Is this available to premium members only? Or am I missing something in this picture?!

Have a nice day,

Laurentiu

loc files contain very reduced information.

<loc version="1.0" src="Groundspeak">

<waypoint>

Halloween V - Event by Lafite

<coord lat="50.583333" lon="7.25"/>

<type>Geocache</type>

</waypoint></loc>

you have to use gpx files.

Happy hunting – the old fashioned way (trads only, exceptions may appear)

Only a few models have the Tour Guide function. I think they're all dedicated navigators (not hand-held units).

I'm new to all this so apologies if this has been done before...

When I export a .gpx file from GSAK, it tells me, for example, that there are 239 caches that I am exporting.

POI loader also tells me that 239 have been loaded into my my 60CSx.

But when I FIND the Custom POIs, only 50 appear on the screen.

Now if I choose a different point of reference in the MENU I can get a different set. Is the 50 visible a standard setting for the GPSr? Can I see more than this 50?

I did not realize it was fifty, however, it does limit the viewable waypoints to the area your at. Also, as you have done, you can change to reference. I have separated my GPX files by type. When using the POI-Loader, it will create separate databases for each named file. Example: Found.pgx and NotFound.gpx will show as Found and NotFound databases to select. I hope that was clear..?

Select Find, Custom Points of Interest, then select menu to select database.

I also have a home database that has family waypoints in it. I can't find my way out of a box, so I use it to auto-route out of unknown areas. :antenna:

In my 60CS, it only shows ~50 when you are searching by "Nearest". When you push the "Find" button, I believe this is the default. Anyway, while this list is showing, press "Menu" and select "Search by name" or some such thing and you'll be presented with the whole list. You can also search by symbol.

hopefully someone help me out here, besides loading waypoints as custom POI files can I use custom icons with these too? I already have some custom icons I use, could some explain exactly how I go about using these with the custom POI's?

EDIT: nevermind, I see whats up now. I have to have a sepereate file for each cache type for this to work.

I currently use GSAK to dump my 500 caches into my Garmin legend C. When traveling to multiple cities it requires me to bring a laptop to use GSAK to reload a new batch of 500. Can we use the POI loader with GSAK and gpx files? Would incoorporating GSAK just add another layer of complexity?

Absolutely you can use GSAK and .gpx files to create custom POIs this way. I do precisely this and export all my geocache PQs as .gpx files and load THOUSANDS of caches. I use smart names, and up to 88 characters for the hint.

Is there a way to add an icon to the menu page? Or are we stuck using the custom poi icon only? Would be nice to be able to have each database have it's own icon tent for camping chest for geocache. I already have icons on the map screen itself just looking to get them on the menu screen.

thanx garmin 60-CSX current software as of current date.
