Chester_Copperpot Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 (edited) I've been leaving Scratch-Off lottery tickets in a few of the caches that i've found so far, ya know, to make it a bit more of a possible treasure hunt for the Next to Find. Since buying lottery tickets is technically gambling, does anybody here think that kind of leave behind is somehow innappropriate or otherwise against the rules??? I'm a newbie, and having a great time, but I want to stay in-bounds too. Edited January 5, 2006 by Chester_Copperpot Quote
+Renegade Knight Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Kids can't buy the tickets but they haven't yet hauled me off to jail when I let mine scratch the ticket. The worst thing that will happen is a 16 year old will will, hide the ticket from his parents until he's 18 because he won't share and then he finds out that the ticket expired while he was waiting. I don't see a problem. Quote
+Moose Mob Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Someone from CA needs to verify this, but I heard... You have to be 18 to buy a ticket in CA and give it to a minor. I believe they can cache it in. Quote
+reveritt Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 This question comes up from time to time. I believe that the general concensus has been that it is acceptable. Quote
+GIDEON-X Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 I've been leaving the as "FTF" prizes for several years now.............No complaints.. Quote
klenger Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 IMHO, it's only gambling if money is involved in getting the ticket. If the ticket is given to someone, where is the gamble for the receiver? They have nothing to loose. Quote
+BlueDeuce Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 I confiscate every one of them I find. I just haven't found any yet. Quote

+Team Red Oak Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 What a great idea. We're getting ready to hide our first cache and we couldn't come up with a FTF prize idea so we were just going to hide it without one. But now I know what to use. Quote
+Prairie Dog Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 I've found several caches in my area that are "lottery ticket" caches. The scratfh ticket and powerball Lottery is a new thing in SC and we are excited to be playing it. The general rule is that you may find the cache and sign the log book getting credit for athe find. A TNLN would apply here. But if you want to play a lottery ticket the owner asks that you buy a ticket and swap it with the ticket already in the cache. Scratch it off and see if you win. Just make sure that the ticket you leave is playable and not already scratched off. Otherwise it's just litter. Happy caching! Quote
+IBcrashen Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 I have one cache set up with those as the only trade items allowed and there are a couple more in the area like that. I even put in a false winner now and then, evil me. Quote
+briansnat Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 I would never leave an unscratched llottery ticket in a cache. I'd be really pissed if the finder scratched it off and won big. Quote
+Goldfinch593 Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 My good friend, Bubba Riley's lottery ticket cache: Scratch That Cache And my latest cache, which also has a lottery ticket theme (but the title comes from a song...): Scratch My Bach Everyone who finds them has fun trading lottery tickets in hopes of winning a real treasure! Quote
+Faith the Aquariaqueen Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 I think if someone who was offended by gambling, they wouldn't take the ticket....I would just hope they wouldn't take it and rip it up. Quote
Zoptrop Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 I've left scratch-off tickets as FTF's in two (of my four caches). I also stick them in the Christmas cards that I hand out to friends and co-workers (I used to put dollar bills in the cards as a joke, but the scratch off tickets are more popular). Quote
+WildGooseChase Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 In Texas you must be 18 to purchase a ticket, but not to play. It's probably similar in other states. I say go ahead and do it.
2.5 Payment of Prizes to Persons Under 18. If a person under the age of 18 years is entitled to a cash prize of less than $600 from the “BREAK THE BANK” Instant Game, the Texas Lottery shall deliver to an adult member of the minor's family or the minor's guardian a check or warrant in the amount of the prize payable to the order of the minor.
2.6 If a person under the age of 18 years is entitled to a cash prize of more than $600 from the “BREAK THE BANK” Instant Game, the Texas Lottery shall deposit the amount of the prize in a custodial bank account, with an adult member of the minor's family or the minor's guardian serving as custodian for the minor. I'm thinking Goldfinch was playing with words....as in Lbs of tickets TOUCHE.................. It made me think of a Recycling Event run by the MA Lottery Commission last summer. They collected 16 tons of scratched lottery tickets! They gave a free $1 instant ticket to anyone over the age of 18 who turned in 25 non-winning tickets. Is that Trash In Cash Out? Quote
+butbyice Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 I wonder what the issue would be if you left tickets in a cache in a state that gaming was againt the law. I think it would be fun to leave powerball tickets in caches but here in Utah could be a big issue. Quote
+Team Cotati Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 I really love leaving scratchers for my visitors to find. I also enclose stamped self-addressed envelopes to that they can mail me notice of their winnings. Quote
gridlox Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 I'd be really pissed if the finder scratched it off and won big. That's why it's called "Gambling" This has gave me a really cool idea for a small cache that I've been wanting to place!! Quote

If it's a $1 ticket, one hopes it wouldn't be a big deal. If you're really concerned, then don't note what you left in your log! Edit: "Took a dollar item, left a dollar item". I wouldn't necessarily classify lottery playing down at the 7-11 with other forms of 'gambling'. Most if not all states allow lotteries. Very few outside Indian casinos allow casino type 'gambling'.
