Using only the photo and GE I played around with some analysis stuff... I think I can Quack... Not the same as our WICquiz in the Canada forum... we use the GE air photo shots of caches to find them... This was done by analyzing the photo for information and then plotting it out... Never been to the area... but I can say "gnarly" legs or otherwise eh! BTW the problem is the lack of SURF... if you use that term... Anyway I'll duck out and go to the fridge... I'm out of something sweet to drink... maybe water and sugar will do. Did a puzzle cache up here last year the same way... after I deleted the final coords from the GPS by accident... remembered that I did the photo provided for fun... still found the cache, but found my solution of the photo was out a bit... misjudged the angle to one object... so I over estimated the distance... Similar to my use of Point Loma... This time two of three runs came out within 50 feet of the coordinates... not bad. Still love the pics... Keep up the good work! Doug 7rxc Elkford BC Canada Doug, Good on y' ... photo forensics are great fun. The body of water shown in the photo is Sweetwater Reservoir so that clue might help to refine your analysis. Well, that and checking my Geocaching profile to see what hides I scored recently! Well done for spotting Point Loma in the shot. Also that white water tank seen on the horizon is a useful landmark for working the angle and distance with Google Earth. Reminds me of the day I used Google Earth to pinpoint the location of Bin Laden's compound in Pakistan based on the name of the town and knowing that it was near a military academy. Google Earth ... it's just amazing to have access to such a marvelous service. Harmon SD Rowdies Edited June 19, 2011 by SD Rowdies Quote Link to comment
7rxc
Thanks for the confirmation... but I got the log bit last... not that I haven't ever done it that way... Tools are tools, right? First thing was the water... Since I had to assume it was SD area, it didn't take much to ID the coast area and then the angle of view (rough bearing)... then to the distinctive shape of Sweetwater... really the only large water there... Point Loma is obvious to use and then the point where the light shoreline became the darker bit gave me a line to the right of the viewpoint... there are some hillsides visible too... one way across the lake just visible... several of these gave lines of position to the bottom center of the image... Once in the area via GE it was easy to guess what was missing and then figure the angle of viewing down... thus the alt. Not many places fit... I guessed it would be near a trail or roadway... First shot put me a couple of hundred feet towards PL but the second and third runs bracketed the site when I ran the cache viewer to see how I did... I like doing that with photos I see, just to figure out where it was taken... All tricks I learned from my Grandfather... a WW I air observer/photographer and interpreter with the Royal Flying Corps in Canada... been doing it ever since for fun... Will keep watching this space... nice to see someone is having fun these days... Snow has mostly gone away now up here and I've nabbed a few even though it's raining a bit... Next comes fire season... then winter... It's why I don't rush cache finding... mostly collect puzzle caches over the winter months then find those when I get a chance. Bye for now Doug 7rxc Quote Link to comment

I don't think it was the award ceremony that was making her sick as much as the malted milkshake we picked up from the nearby fast food joint. Perhaps it was a combination of both. Just after Tom wrapped things up she proceeded to lose the contents of her stomach on the table. Did you notice how quickly we left? I did give one of the staff a heads-up about what was under the pile of napkins on that table. Harmon, thanks so much. I laughed so hard when I saw this that I pulled a muscle somewheres. D! Poor Claire! She sure is a cutie, thanks for linking the other shot. Just shows how far I'll go ... 125 photos posted for the event and I find that one. I just knew it would lead to an interesting story. My first impression was that she was hiding her eyes so's she wouldn't have t' look at that pack of theatrical rascals beside her. I'll just bet that the Barrister didn't even give her an award-ribbon to wear. Imagine that ... considering that I met another Geocacher yesterday that was wearing a M*A*S*H award ribbon even though she wasn't at the event. I wasn't there either and I didn't get an award- ribbon, how fair can that be? Well, o.k., I did get a slice of delicious PUD cake come t' think of it.
