The Hokesters Posted August 9, 2005 Posted August 9, 2005 (edited) I have altered the online java script that will allow you to get in to StuartP's Geocaching chat room without downloading a piece of software. www.hokesters.co.uk/IRC/ Click the link above and then bookmark it for future use. You will have to wait a moment whilst the applet logs on. When you see 'End of MOTD Command' you are logged on to the server. Now type the following; /nick *your cache name* (eg. /nick hokesters - there is a character limit of 14) and press enter. now type; /join geocaching Enjoy! Edited August 9, 2005 by The Hokesters
The Hokesters Posted August 9, 2005 Author Posted August 9, 2005 We seem to be having 100% success now. Thanks to LordElph and Lathama for helping me crack it. Simon

Wadders Posted August 9, 2005 Posted August 9, 2005 All i get is a white square with a red cross in it
lathama Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 this will either be because you have a firewall installed or because the server uses PDF to produce it and urs is out of date
The Hokesters Posted August 10, 2005 Author Posted August 10, 2005 Wadders - what browser are you using? Firefox - Tools>>Options>>Web Features - ensure both Enable Java and Enable Javascript are ticked. IE - Tools>>Options>>Advanced - ensure Java is enabled.
The Hokesters Posted August 10, 2005 Author Posted August 10, 2005 I have written some additional scripts which will help regular users of the Java script log on quicker. If you are regularly using the Chat room and use the java script to log on please let me know and I will right you your own login. Simon

The Hokesters Posted August 12, 2005 Author Posted August 12, 2005 cant find the java bit? Are you using AOL? If not please tell me which browser software you are using.
SlytherinAlex Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Not so much a chat room. More like the Marie Celeste. -
lordelph Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 I normally have a few IRC channels open and I'm in there all day - conversations are sporadic so it's best to stay logged in as long as you can. It tends to liven up in the evenings though...try around 7pm
The Hokesters Posted August 12, 2005 Author Posted August 12, 2005 (edited) If you see my name or any derivative (ie. HOKES|INandOUT) start a private message and if I am near the computer I will get a bleep Been really busy in there this lunchtime. Edited August 12, 2005 by The Hokesters
Wadders Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 cant find the java bit? Are you using AOL? If not please tell me which browser software you are using. Hi Simon, how do i know what browser software? Not using AOL though. Terry
The Hancock Clan Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 Worked fine for us (we had to download Java plugin for Firefox though).
Bill D (wwh) Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 Wadders wrote:how do i know what browser software? He needs to know which browser you're using, e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, etc.? And which version, e.g. IE 6.0, Firefox 1.0.5, etc. You'll probably find the version if you go to Help/About or something very similar.
Wadders Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 ok, thanks Bill ie 6.0 is what i am running then.
t.a.folk Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 seems we don't know how to follow simple instructions . ho hum .try again another day .
The Hokesters Posted August 14, 2005 Author Posted August 14, 2005 Wadders, Sounds like you do not have Java Installed. Java is a small bolt-on for Internet Explorer that should allow you to see the IRC applet. (I am assuming you couldn't find Java in the Tools>>Options instructions above). Visit this page and click the top option 'Windows (Online Installation)'. Follow the instructions to install Java and then try the login instructions at the top of this thread again. Good luck... Simon
paul.blitz Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 just tried it again.... still just get: "Unable to connect : java.net.ConnectException : Connection timed out: connect " Its the same in Firefox and in IE6.
The Hokesters Posted August 25, 2005 Author Posted August 25, 2005 just tried it again.... still just get: "Unable to connect : java.net.ConnectException : Connection timed out: connect " Its the same in Firefox and in IE6. Sorry Paul, I missed your post. Try fiddling with your firewall settings - I suspect that it is blocking Java. Simon
t.a.folk Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 We can only get as far as typing" /t.a.folk " which we enter .Then "unknown command " appears and we can get no further.
Dorsetgal & GeoDog Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 try /nick xxxx where xxx is your name
t.a.folk Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 (edited) Thanks for response Dorsetgal & GeoDog. We had already tried it with "nick " after the slash but seems the problem was too much punctuation! We omitted our "." between after "t "and "a"and hey presto . It worked once .Have tried several times since and get "geo guest nickname already in use "and "guest geo nickname already in use " and then after a pause it disconnects .
