+one4zorro
A few of us have mentioned the possibility of a North Midlands meet for cachers in Staffordshire/Cheshire/Derbyshire/Shropshire/West Midlands and anyone else! I might be interested in putting something together in the Cannock Chase/Stafford/Stone area, but could do with some idea of how much interest there would be. It would probably be early February, low key, drink, pub meal. What do you think? Martin Quote Link to comment

+MarcB
Yes deffo for me, early Feb is okay but it'd have to be at a weekend, preferably Saturday. MarcB Quote Link to comment
+DomHeknows
as long as i'm still in the country, I'm up for it - Saturday is best for me too. Quote Link to comment
+Algy
I'd like to come too. Weekend either day suits me. Alan Quote Link to comment

+The J J Noodle Fan Club
If it's a weekend we'd try and come up for it (relatives to pop in and visit in Stafford & Stoke). The JJNFC. Quote Link to comment

davester
Actually although I posted above saying I'd be interested in a normal meet, I was also thinking about a GeoHikes meet sometime in the spring in this area. Who would be interested in that? Probably would look at a 8-10 mile walk with a possible extension for the more hardcore people. I normally restrict myself to a circular walk but have some good linear walks with many a cache enroute with public transport links. Of course, if enough people are envolved a large taxi/minibus at the start or end of the day would be economical. Thoughts please. Edited December 10, 2004 by davester Quote Link to comment
+Algy
Excuse my ignorance what is a geohike (links to explanation appreciated)? Subject to it being a hunt involving walking rather than a walk with some hunting I would be interested subject to the dates of course. Alan Quote Link to comment

markandlynn
In know a a good geohike in staffordshire. Its got 3 good caches on it as well. 10 miles is ok for our kids but the hike provides a short alternative. I could come up with a much longer version for the more hardcore as well. An on the day bonus cache is quite possible in the area as well. Quote Link to comment

This is getting a bit complicated As I am a big suporter of your site and would like to promote it as much as I can, how about we combine the two events. Here is an idea. We use a GeoHike that has a pub half way. Those that want to, could meet up on the walk and meet others at the pub. In the afternoon we could then complete the walk. People that don't feel up to the whole walk could just join us for the second part. Just an idea - what do you think? Martin Quote Link to comment

I'll have to start having a think about suitable places. I guess I should really go and seek out a walk on Cannock Chase, as that is nice and central. My Churnet Valley walk would also lend itself very well to this, but is far too muddy in the winter/spring time. Quote Link to comment
markandlynn
Brewood has lots of pubs and lots of walks nice and central as well. Shall check the maps for a longer walk. Quote Link to comment

davester
For those with kids, I think the Churnet Valley would be a pretty good place for a meet., especially with the Churnet Valley railway linking much of the route. There are also plenty of very nice pubs and a lot of Forrestry Commission and Staffs County Council land (for easier permissions). If it were moved to late Spring, then I have no doubts that the nearby draw of Alton Towers might help attract a few further afield cachers too. Quote Link to comment

I am currently planning another cache for Cannock Chase - but this will be no 'park and ride namby pamby cache'. This will be hardcore The only problem is that in a fit of madness my wife and I decided we wanted to do 100 caches before the new year, so time is at a premium until January 1st. +The Hokesters
Either way for us but definitely a circular walk to save on a support team being required. We are happy on 10-15 miles but similarly happy on 1-2 miles with plenty of caches Quote Link to comment
Deego
I am easy either way . But 2 meets might be better than one one in Feb and one in March Edited December 10, 2004 by Deego Quote Link to comment
+MarkGPX
I think this could get tricky trying to please everyone. Personally I would go with Deego's suggestion of 2 separate events, a "low-key" event based in a pub while the weather's not so good and a walking-based event a bit later in the year. Just my £0.02 Mark Quote Link to comment
Abominable Abomnible
Definately interested, will let you know for sure nearer the time Owen + Carolyne Quote Link to comment
+Belplasca
I'd like to get to these meet(s) but two Saturdays in February are already taken - 12th and 26th. If the Pub meet is not on one of those dates, then I'll probably be there! As to the Geohike, I'd have a go at that, too. But I think it might be better to make it a bit later, with slightly longer days, although I did walk 15 miles on the Sussex Downs last weekend, so it can be done even in December (Unfortunately, I'd already found the nearby caches...!) +wigglesworth
Very interested in an event - mind you we are short distance walkers and consider 7 miles a LONG walk. However there have been occasions when we have walked further, especially if we do a few caches and don't realise just how far it was! Peter Quote Link to comment
davester
I was having a good look at my maps last night and thinking about this one, and I did come up with a very good place which is cache free that could benefit from a good multi-cache trail. There are also a fair few caches nearby for those who want a longer walk, as well as a very agreeable pub, cheap all-day car parking AND reachable by public transport for those who would need that. Tittesworth Reservoir Not really got the time myself at the moment, but perhaps worth chasing up permissions with Severn Trent via the site manager? They are very keen to promote events like this and it would open up a fair few other sites for permissions if it goes down well. Quote Link to comment
+The Hokesters
There are caches on ST land such as A Reserview by Kinswad. Perhaps it is worth speaking to those who set them to find out if they sought permission and from whom? Si Quote Link to comment
markandlynn
If you struggle to get through to Severn Trent i have some high level contacts we could use. (as a last resort though please) Quote Link to comment
+MuddiBootz
Tittesworth sounds a great idea to me. Theres an all year camping Club site at nearby Blackshaw Moor and a reasonable pub for refreshments at the Three Horseshoes which I beleive may have accomodation. A couple of nice caches on the Roaches too! Quote Link to comment
+browni
Yes count me in for this. The 8 mile walk is just about my limit, any of the locations would be fine. Quote Link to comment

+MarcB
It might be an idea... historically there has been very few Midlands meetups (Lathama did a few ages back) - being situated in the centre of the country I can imagine they could be very popular (this thread alone proves that). I still like Tittesworth as a good area for an event. Perhaps a few of us could do a reccy run up there, and perhaps show the local ranger/manager what it's all about? Quote Link to comment
+DomHeknows
we had a meetup near tittesworth - at Don't Look Down a while back - was a great time. The resevoir itself is really nice and really needs a cache near it. Quote Link to comment
