  1. Pardon my ignorance but what is it? Is there a link? Alan
  2. I use TomTom3 on an iPaq2210 to get to the general cache location. It shows unfound (by me) caches as treasure chests with closed lids and the transfer of this POI data is simple via GCUK. You can also load in a similar way the speed camera database for a quicker getaway! Hope this helps as it is a darn sight cheaper than the built in car system I had in my previos car. Alan By the way my version is the hard wired one with an effective suction cradle for the PDA
  3. Excellent Let us know the cost (and p&p) and availability when you can. Alan
  4. Kiwis Thanks for the tip, How did I manage without it? Ta. Alan
  5. Can I suggest (respectfully) these edits to the earlier post: SOME USERS OF Powered vehicles such as 4x4s and trail bikes have done massive damage in various areas such as the Dales and the S Pennines. We have had run ins with SOME trailbikers churning up aN SSSI in the nesting season who later on the same day knocked a 71 year old gamekeeper down and then threw his mobile and van keys into a drain. In the Dales as far as I know greenlaning is going to be stopped because of the damage already done.As for the comments about the scientific paper quoted Iam not convinced at all. Please highlight the selfish users of 4x4's indeed take their numbers and report them to the Park Authorities and or the Police as necessary(see above), but please don't lets fall into the trap of inferring that all are in the same bag. Those trailbikers were criminals, nothing less. I've not read the paper quoted so will reserve my opinion until I can. Alan (a non fourwheel drive driver)
  6. Billy I know Butes in the far north but can't you receive colour yet* Sadly most of my photos although in colour show a pink thumb! Alan * AB BSSRAPR VAGRAQRQ
  7. Thanks for that. I have an iPaq which I believe is a different operating system. Any how I'll have a play around with it to see if I can get automated! Alan
  8. Chris I'll ignore Birders' spoiler above and ask my daft question. I have spoiler sync and all the requsites including GSAK. Indeed I have run spoilersync then manually put them on my PDA. But what is Plucker and do I need to have that aswell? If so where from? or is it part of the program already? OK 3 questions, I told you I was daft. Alan
  9. You owe no one on this UK forum an apology! Far from it. In my short geocahing career I think you have both trodden a very difficult path with a careful and considered tread. You resignations are not un-expected though as you are both gentlemen in the true sense of that word. I'll refrain from being inflamatory about the cause of the trouble and ask instead in a tongue in cheek manner the following. As retired reviewers you know where all the boxes are buried so can I tag along on your next cache hunt? Please! Best regards Alan Gough
  10. That's there and here's here. Now lets move on to caching! I went out yesterday and did 3 local (West Midlands,UK) caches all involving pleasant walks, two next to a pretty canal, thanks Stu and Sarah and Jilly and Gray. My old Garmin 12 usually gives between 3 and 6m error message but yesterday it was consistently 10m. So much so that the last cache involved a good hunt for a easy hide. Has anyone else experienced this during stormy weather? Or should I put it down to coincidence? Alan
  11. Hello I'm new, since November 04. I'm English, since 57. I rely on the UK forum for my information on geocaching rather than the other regional forums as, sadly through another sport I have "enjoyed" the American way of posting (carry a big stick and frequently use it) which comes from a very vociferous few and I want substance not hot air. Remember always, its their ball and even if they do happen to employ a bad referee we still have to play with their ball.* So I for one am off hunting and with this real gale blowing I should get round my targets twice as fast. Finally, in answer to the topic title (and the several similar ones) my answer is YES. Its a hunt for a lunch box - lets not make too big a meal out of it. Happy New Year Alan * unless and until a viable alternative actually appears, of course!
  12. Thanks for the prompt reply which appears to have solved the problem and what's more I haven't had to retype. Isn't tinternet great. Alan
  13. Happy new year one and all. Now I use GSAK, and mark on it those caches I have found. I also lock the caches once edited. But for the third time when I import newer queries and load them to GSAK I loose most but not all found records which then show as not found. Today only 14 remained found out of 41 entered as above when I updated the gpx databases and I am very reluctant to re-enter the founds again. So is there a computer literate cacher here who uses GSAK and can spare the time to put me straight. By the way I do answer yes to the back-up option. Alan Gough
  14. Excuse my ignorance what is a geohike (links to explanation appreciated)? Subject to it being a hunt involving walking rather than a walk with some hunting I would be interested subject to the dates of course. Alan
  15. I'd like to come too. Weekend either day suits me. Alan
  16. I'd like to take five when available, please. How about (and apologies to Churchill) "We shall find them in the fields" Algy PS whatever motto is chosen could it not be printed in encrypted format?
  17. Can some one point me to a website in the UK which sells geocaching merchandise. I've done a search without success, but I'm sure I saw something on this recently. Regards Algy
  18. Just an update. Found problem. Loaded garmin upgrade to the firmware taking it from 4.58 to 4.6 and hey presto now have waypoints on the 12. Regards Alan
  19. GPS 12 firmware was 4.58. The unit is 5 or 6 yeaars old. Alan
  20. Thanks I have the latest version 1.2.4 and whilst checking this discovered on their list someone with the same problem, which is as yet unresolved - I'll keep an eye on that thread. I also found a firmware update for my G12 unit on the Garmin site and will install that this evening and retry. Fingers crossed! Alan The upgrade to 4.60 firmware allowed the GSAK waypoints to download! The name attached is the first 6 characters of the waypoint name with further details below the lat long. I'll now go and register with GSAK. Many thanks for the patience shown. Looking forward to the week-end. Alan
  21. Thanks very much for the help thus far. Alan
  22. Yes these are selected and when I send waypoints I get on the gpsbabel screen GPS_packet_read: No DLE (this appears four times) I have garmin/garmin Host waiting on the garmin12 Any Ideas Alan
  23. I've now downloaded wapoints from my garmin 12 onto trackmakers map, so thats a start. However I would really like to use it with GSAK. Alan
  24. Thanks for the reply. I do have a pda on the desk pc, so tried it with the laptop which dosen't and still get the same message. Alan
  25. Hello Firstly I'm a little over one week into this addictive pastime. Secondly if the topic has been raised before I apologise in advance. Now I have a Garmin 12 and want to down load waypoints to it from GSAK but I am encountering problems which are sending my non-electronic brain into spasms! I received today the garmin serial cable and have connected the G12 to my PC which runs MS XP and also on my laptop which runs MS98 , followed the set up garmin/garmin host etc but when I try to send the wpts from GSAK I get: Error sending waypoints GPS-Packet_read:No DLE Garmin: can't init COM1 I'm positive the cables in com1. What on earth am I doing wrong? How do I fix it? or where do I go to find the answer? or am I doomed to manually enter the waypoints! Alan
