The smartname code that RM and I use from GSAK (%typ1%con1%drop2 %ter1) replaces the "GC" with a two digit code that tells you the type of cache and the type of container. Here are the codes for the first two digits:

1st digit: %typ1

T=Traditional

M=Multi

B=Letterbox hybrid

C=CITO

E=Event

L=Locationless

V=Virtual

W=Webcam

O=Other

G=Benchmark

R=Earth

Y=Mystery/Unknown.

2nd digit: %con1

R=Regular

L=Large

M=Micro

S=Small

V=Virtual

U=Unknown

We use the four main digits from the GC code so we can cross-reference the cache in our Palms or so we can use the next cache feature in the cache log page. Finally we add one digit for the terrain rating at the end.

Cool New PQ Feature

In case you folks have not noticed, you can now do a PQ of all your finds. The featrue shows up below your normal list of PQ's. It is being discussed here.

Edit: You can only run one every 7 days.

That's nice to know Miragee but....

RM and I were trying to work with Jeff Boulter (the author of the "Express Logger" website) to see if he could add an option to his website to support the smartnames that we use from GSAK.  :anibad:

I had a feeling I had jumped into a conversation . . . but I didn't see the other posts . . . sorry about that. :unsure::D

Edit to add my latest San Diego/Imperial County map from the Keep People site. Look at that cluster out in the desert from the Geo-Campout weekend . . . :ph34r:

However, I really like the NG Topo one. I may have to invest in that software someday . . .

Very cool! :D

A little heads up to anyone who wants to hike Mt. McGinty in Jamul. I placed five more caches there yesterday. I figured as long as I had to hike up there to check on one of my other ones, I may as well make it worthwhile . . . :huh:

I'm still waiting for the approval process to be completed . . . :)

Introducing Yrium Memorial Series #23 - The Vulture:

Thanks, again, to Harmon, for the design.

Great card! Nice job Harmon and congrats to Vulture! :ph34r:

Another great job by FlagMan.

Thanks to everyone that suggested names for YMS #23. I went with the strongest recommendation and with the best find/placement statistics. It's nice to know that there is still a long list of deserving YMS candidates. Long live the Yrium Memorial Series.

BTW Pat, I submitted a similar photo back in 2004 but I didn't win. I wasn't smart enough to post it in the forums to get some votes.

Thanks for the vote and nice YJTB photo! It looks like you got closer to the edge of the 2000 foot cliff than I did. I'll admit it.....I was chicken. :ph34r:

Mrs. Rocket Man was yelling at me the whole time to get away from the edge. Too bad the background wasn't in better focus. I think your photo is better. RM

It was a tricky shot. I guess I favored focusing on the background and luckily the WJTB didn't come out too blurry. The weird part is that the background almost looks like as if it was painted.

I see Mrs. Rocket Man has stalled out after only one find....

O.K. ~ when did you sneak that white Jeep out of my swag bag?

We took some pics at Top of the World also, but they were too far away, and you couldn't see the Jeep in the pic. However, the picture did make it on to the top of the geocaching page!!

GPSDiscount.com.  I think that Garmin will upgrade you to 7 for free if you buy 6 (Call them).

$104! That's a great deal! Garmin will upgrade you for free! Kawikaturn told me that he just got a free upgrade.

The upgrade is $75.00

If you purchased it with in a certain amount of time....Garman will upgrade one time for free. At $75.00 and with the upgrades coming out annually I think I will stick with REI' free upgrades for life. But that is just me.

PS Sorry for the slow response...just getting caught up.

Cegrube and Chuy were FTF on all of my new caches . . . and they did them in the dark . . . :rolleyes: The views from the caches are really great, so I don't know how much they were able to see . . . although the lights were probably very pretty. :P

So, now that there is a whole passel of caches on Mt. McGinty, I hope more people will venture out to Jamul to enjoy that hike all the way to the top to No Hinty on McGinty -- which now has many hints in the previous logs. :)

Only one place to buy a GPS ...go to REI you will pay a bit more but you have an unconditional lifetime warranty. I have been caching for just over a month and I am on my second GPS. Say a new model comes out...take it back and get the new one. Say you want to upgrade...take it back. Say your wife says "no more caching" take it back...yes if you don’t want it any longer you get your money back. Say two months after you purchased it...the company offers a rebate...take it back and submit your new receipt. Say a rock falls on it...take the parts back and get a new one. The only thing that is not covered is loss/theft...you must at least have the parts/unit (lol I said “unit”) to exchange. REI Return Policy

I don't know about you but I am sure I will kill one or two a year.

Dave

Here is the info...and the link.

REI does have a generous return policy . . . which is why their "Used Gear" sale is such a success.

However, since I have seen well-worn and damaged items at that sale, I think their return policy should be a bit less-generous.

Being able to return sandals on which the straps had been cut short, or a GPS cigarette adapter that had been "modified" beyond usability, or four-year-old pants with ripped lining, or a stuff sack that had been abused and torn seems a bit too generous. :rolleyes:

Maybe REI wouldn't stand for "Really Expensive Inside" if their return policy was a bit less generous . . . :P

Hey SD GCers. New member here! Starting close to home and working outward. Man we have a lot of nice canyons around here!

PS REI rocks. In '88 I returned a tent I'd burned up with a malfunctioning stove. There was nothing left of the fabric but a portion of the floor. I told them I think it should have melted instead of burning, and they gave me full store credit for the list price, even though I bought it on sale. I didn't even stretch the truth, just told them everything that happened and answered their questions, and they ponied up. I used the store credit to replace the tent with a smaller, lighter model, and a svea 123. No more stove malfunctions. Still have both items.

OIC....I think we got our wires crossed.....we were talking about Garmin Mapsource City Select software upgrades.

As far as hardware, I already bought a 60CS on Amazon almost a year ago. Ironically, it is back at Garmin with one month to go on the warranty.....

Welcome Taylor! :blink:

If you become hooked, pay the 30 bucks/year for the premium membership. It's worth every penny! 30 bucks won't even pay for a round of golf and golf isn't half as fun as caching! :rolleyes:

They are rated one of the best companies in the world to work for...and financially they are doing quite well. Why change what is working.

Yes...some people will always take advantage of a generous return policy...but because of that same policy REI has gained a tremendously loyal following.

To me it is a no-brainer...If I need to buy something...and REI sells it...I buy from REI. However comma I would never return a pair of pants or shoes that were worn out. But I have gone through sevral GPSRs in less than a year. Not only do I not have to worry about the MFGs warranty I do not have to ship it across the country to get it repaired and do not have to wait for a replacement.

So the bottom line is, I save money and do not lose valuble caching time.

The same applies to software. Surprised me... but when we purchesed our GPS. The sales person told us that their software was returnable also...told us to keep our eyes open for new versions...and to exchange our software when they come out. Also told us if Garmin comes out with a new model in the future that we like better...we can return our GPS and the softwere for the new model. REI gives me a peace of mind that no other company has ever offered me. I do a lot of research before I make a large purchases (ask my wife)...and after I researched REI and how they came to be I was sold.

PS Sorry for beating a dead horse...If you would like more info or if I can be of help...e-mail me.

I actually "worked" for REI for a couple of days (interesting story...no, I wasn't fired for insubordination). Anyway, at the employee orientation they explained in very great detail how the company works. The reason they have such an outstanding return policy and can still have competitive pricing is because REI is a co-op and not a corporation. Basically the consumers run the company by becoming co-op members and they have the opportunity to vote on the direction of the company and its policies. The also "vote" through their purchases and those products that are durable, efficient, and customer-friendly are the products stocked at REI stores. For every purchase made, the members increase their stock in the company and they are paid dividends accordingly. Kind of a neat way to operate isn't it??

Anybody want to carpool to these events from Escondido?

I figured I could drive to the first one, which is way out in the sticks in Ramona. Then the other carpooler could be the designated driver for the second one! So the plan is to pick up trash at the first one and then to get trashed at the second one! :rolleyes:

HEY!! sticks? :blink: That's actually a compliment for us wanting to get outta the city.

Might want a high clearance vehicle to cruise through the MTB series by Toby's Gang and a few up the way to the top of Black Mountain.......see the Black Canyon Area Caches bookmarks.

By the way, I have a 4x4 Durango. Is that high-clearance enough?

Should only be a few hours with an orientation and breakfast at the Forest Service Headquarters before we head out

It will be very laid back compared to the Cedar Creek Falls Ironman Clean-up Event. Pretty much picking up trash around the bridge and up at the swimming hole, maybe help spraypaint over some of the graffitti on the bridge. Heck, for those heading out on the truck trails they can cache and trash-out at the same time.

However, if you want to do "Plan B" and run up the Black Mountain Truck Trail with Gecko Dad you can do that too. :D
