# Geocaching Territory

## Recommended Posts

posted a link to his cool Challenge Checker for your geocaching territory.

I wondered how big these territories get, so it would be nice if you post your territory sizes!

I have one with 206.9 km^2 and one with 121.6 km^2.

Maybe @arisoft can even create a checker with 5km max distance, since 3km is a bit short for sparsely cached areas.

Here is territory tool with 5km separation

Please, note that HQ has not (yet) accepted this kind of territory based challenge, but the result may be of interest to many.

Thank you very much!

With the 5km tool my areas are 381.5 km^2 and 327.9 km^2 big

I guess I live in a fairly densely populated area.  For 5 km separation:

The largest area covered by linked caches between [GC2PK3M](https://coord.info/GC2PK3M) and [GC46AB8](https://coord.info/GC46AB8) is 2513.8 km² wide.

Probably off topic, but what is this checker testing? I fail, but it doesn't say what the criteria are and what I can do to qualify.

P.S. The largest area covered by linked caches between GCxxx and GCxxx is 212.8 km² wide.  - bad wording here. An area isn't x km² wide. It's simply x km².

It’s finding the largest area constrained by the caches you’ve found, linked such that no find is more than 5 km from the next. To pass the challenge the area needs to exceed 1000 km².  The checker can be configured to change both the proximity and the area.  It’s pretty cool, and I’m amazed at how quickly it runs.

True, but I wish my Finnish (or any other language, for that matter) was as good as arisoft’s English!

With 3km my largest is 2016.7, with 5km it's 2774.2.  Interesting.

I love this challenge.  My largest 5km area is presently 1909.2 km².

Nearby, I also have a 101.9 km² area.  That one includes two countries.

If I temporarily change my home co-ordinates, will I get different areas?

Unfortinately it was not accepted as a challenge because the result looks like a polygon. I hope that some day it could be reconsidered because it is an interesting  challenge.

Your home coordinates have no effect because the checker doesn't know your coordinates - it processes all your finds.

Ah, makes sense. Most of my finds are in Ontario - and we have a giant lake to the south, so that almost automatically halves my potential caching area. :) If this were made a challenge, I don't think I could reach it without some serious travel-caching.

No idea what this challenge is, but I have 4137 kn.

Interesting tool. For me, the "5km" area is 8610.8 km².

However, the territory has a few exclaves, e.g. this one:

Is this a bug or a feature of the algorithm?

It is intented feature.

Looks like we have a bit of an overlap .

If I could fill in the gap between Woking and Cobham it would pull all of Central London into mine, and another couple round Basingstoke will fill that space in the top left. It's a shame it's not allowed as a challenge as it provides an interesting statistic/map and I might be tempted to fill those gaps if there was a challenge for it, though I have 2332 km² at the mo.

Too bad it's was declined as a challenge

My result is 2400 km2 in Quebec. I was expecting to get Nova Scotia instead but I guess I have too many gaps.
