Best, Oldest, and Newest Geocaching Websites

Recommended Posts

What are some geocaching websites you would reccommend that have been around for a long time, and what are some new ones that have great content, but haven't been popularized yet? This can be any geocaching themed websites, i.e. Blogs, Tools, Resources, Instructions, etc.

Replies to this question should avoid referring to alternative geocache listing sites.  Thanks.

My favorite websites besides geocaching.com are [censored].com, [cantpostthis].org, and [ifItellyouImightgetbanned].com.

There are plenty of complementary websites that are not listing services.  I'll kick off the productive responses with my favorite:  Project-GC.com.  I go there at least weekly to plan geocaching trips, study my statistics, see if I qualify for challenge caches, and use the cool mapping tools.

SEWdough got there first :P" Blogs, Tools, Resources, Instructions, etc " missed out on vloggers.  And there more than the obvious and most well known Joshua the Geocaching Vlogger...

Many may be just casual 'watch me cache' type vlogs, but there are many that are informative, helpful, entertaining, inspirational, highlights for caches you should visit on travels, diy guides, that sort of thing.   If you can wade through the mass when you search for 'geocaching' you'll find some gems.   Covering much of the english speaking community, Josh's "GCNW" (The Geocaching Network) includes quite a number of geocaching-specific channels you can check out.

If you want a classic and it's still up. Before Groundspeak had maps, the site below had a map of them.

https://www.brillig.com/geocaching/maps.shtml

If you use it in combination with the Archive Machine, it will give you very detailed maps of how geocaching was like in 2002, 2003, 2004

Snapshot of all the geocaches in South Carolina on Jun 2001

https://web.archive.org/web/20011113013343/http://www.brillig.com/geocaching/south_carolina.shtml

eventually Groundspeak got their own maps, Brillig got the DMCA to stop their maps.... But it was a very valuable tool at the time.

And vloggers miss out on those, like me, who create short films about geocaching. My films are GIFF entries, international geocaching collabs, and some other fun films.

haha, true enough, though I tend to include all video creators in with the 'vloggers' label. That can be misleading. I don't think of 'vloggers' solely as self-pointing cameras. As I mentioned there are people who do more documentary style videos and whatnot, so maybe instead of "vloggers", imagine I just said "video creators" :) (Youtube refers to channel owners as that as well).

But I digress!

Since someone already mentioned Project-GC I'll mention cachetur.no instead. It's a great complement to Project-GC, with more detailed tools for making a tour plan, routing and things like that. There are also interconnecting tools so that you can use Project-GC to easily find caches you need for your Jasmer (for instance) and then easily insert them in the appropriate places in your cachetur tour.

I forgot about that one and the woman that has been posting a puzzle a day on that blog since 2011 is a local to my area.

The woman who runs the blog is awesome.  Without even knowing me personally, she has helped me dry run and troubleshoot puzzles that I was creating, and I even featured her as a character in one of my puzzles as a thank you.  I highly recommend this blog for really interesting geocaching puzzle caches from around the world.

That she is.  I worked on a puzzle or two with her while at an event.   She's slowed down her hiding considerably the last couple of years.  Once one of her puzzle caches is found, she responds quickly to anyone asking for help.  She has collaborated with several puzzle cache CO's on the west coast as well, exchanging ideas and using each others caches as part of a puzzle.
