Seriously, though... in your example, at least the guy wrote a fun log! I enjoyed the "we pump you up" tone to it. Quote Link to comment

+DanOCan
I was third to find on a cache and in the process of searching I put a treking pole right through the plastic container. Not much I could do but post my log along with a Needs Maintenance and apologize to the owner at the next event. Quote Link to comment
Skippermark
I broke a FTF cache once. It cracked when I removed it from the hiding spot. I felt bad. It was the guys first hide. I emailed him and posted it in my log. He said it was cool and replaced it a couple days later. Wouldn't you know it, the next guy to find it after it got replaced ended up breaking it too. +catsnfish
I went after an FTF with my son, and we pretty much walked right to it. While signing I dropped it into a narrow inaccessible place (that's pronounced fencepost ) it was just about dusk so we walked back to the car to get my tools and did our best to fish out the matchstick container. I worked on it for about 20 minutes in the dark while my son kept lookout. No luck and I had minor slices on my hand from the inner burrs on the post. Nothing to do but notify the owner and offer to replace the cache. I logged the FTF but lost out on 2 others new caches nearby because of the time I spent trying to fix my mistake. I feel so mad that archived that cache immediately. Hey! I logged a FTF and an FTB, as well as a Needs Maintenance! Thermos bottle hanging in a hemlock tree using fishing line. Got it down without too many problems. (The line snagged on the rough hemlock bark.) Pulled on the fishing line to get it back into position, and the line broke! Guess they need a stronger fishing line! I admitted to it! CO didn't get mad at me, or archive the cache. (Hasn't fixed it yet either...) Quote Link to comment
AZcachemeister
I don't hide 'cleverly camoed' containers that might get damaged if someone looks at them cross-eyed. I do own an adopted (ammo can) cache that was shot with a shotgun by some hunters...the can is still OK, but the latch suffered. Quote Link to comment

ao318
I lost the lid to a micro on a FTF. I swore I put in my pocket and couldn't find it. I placed the cache in some paper and labeled it and put in the closest cache as to not get lost. I then emailed the CO and told them what happened and where I put the micro. They were very understanding and replaced the cache the next day. Funny thing is I found the lid about 6 months later in my caching bag. I still believe I put it into my pocket. Quote Link to comment

+Stargazer22
We found a cache once that was a blinkie on an old tailgate from a pickup truck, lying in the forest in the middle of nowhere. I lifted up the tailgate on one end to look at it more closely and found the blinkie in the latch mechanism on one end. No problem. Opened it up, signed the log, and was replacing it back on the tailgate when it slipped from my fingers and went into a crack in the metal, disappearing inside. Spent the next 45 minutes getting the little bugger out of there. When it finally came out, it went flying into the sand and disappeared. Back to the jeep for some tools, I used a long box wrench, pulling it back and forth over the sand until I finally heard the metallic 'click' when the magnet in the blinkie grabbed the wrench. Believe me, I was REALLY careful putting it back where it belonged that 2nd time! Luckily, I haven't damaged one or lost one to the point where the owner had to fix or replace it. Skippermark
Agreed. And what the heck is a "blinkie"? Another name for a nano cache, those tiny little black thumbnail sized containers. The name sometimes varies by location. They are often called blinkies because they are actually some kind of LED container that blinks when originally designed. They are also called Mr. Magnetos (the original name they were sold under) in some other areas. Quote Link to comment

I wasn't thrilled to see a cache placed specifically on an item that I thought looked more like something we should CITO than use as a hiding place. However, the cache was hidden by a very prolific and high profile cacher in our area and I didn't feel like making an issue of it at the time. Some call them blinkies, some call them Mr. Magnetos, some call them a PITA! You can see from the size that finding one of these after losing it in a pile of sand can be a challenge! Found one of those, someone tucked it in the gap under a stop sign, between the sign and the metal post! It certainly was a PITA When we found it I almost lost the lid, it fell in the grass. I had to search by parting the blades to find it, which was super fun because it was raining out. Also it was hard to get the log out then it was annoying to try to roll up the log and put it back in. although I say it was PITA but it sure was cool Edited December 16, 2009 by lavender5215 Quote Link to comment

+Wooden Cyclist
Some nanos are easier to "break" than others. The magnet fell out of one of the first nanos that I found. After a futile search in the grass I put the container in my pocket and drove to the nearest hobby store. After purchasing a package of appropriate size magnets and putting one in the container I drove back to GZ and stuck it back on the sign post behind the reflector. The cache was out of service for about an hour. Nobody logged an FTF for that day so I guess I didn't ruin anybody's search for that particular cache. Everyone logs their DNF"s, right? +DragonsWest
Re: Blinkies The 'cool' factor will go away after about the fifteenth one you find. Some are nothing more than a Blinkie on a sign or signpost. I have found a few though which were very artfully done and deserving of praise. Like any cache, I think it's how you place it. In the open space between Stanford University and I-280 I found the remains of a blinkie, with the prior finder admitting in the log he had lost the cap in grass. Problem being, he said he would remedy it and never did. When I visited only the bottom of the blinkie was left, the log gone. I notified the CO and he/she looked after it. Quote Link to comment
