  1. Thanks. I didn't even pay attention to those links before.
  2. I looked at everything on that link and couldn't find a list of individual state contacts. I'm wondering if it's just too early for something like that? You would think that they would eventually put links up to the individual states. I could be wrong though. It happened once.
  3. It seems like it would be a nuisance to have a bunch of us email Debi for pretty much the exact same information. It would be nice to have a list of the individual coordinators for each state in one nice location (say, in this thread??) Then each of us can bug those people instead
  4. If I lived even remotely close I would jump on that. Sounds like it would be a great adventure.
  5. Awesome! I sort of forgot which marks I reported, so I held off for a bit. Now I have to check back and add the ones I've missed.
  6. I have to agree that if it truly is destroyed, it should be marked as such. If I'm looking for a water tower or smokestack or something like that, I want to see the actual structure. Having someone tell me, "back in the day, this used to be here" just doesn't have the same effect. I mean, what's the point of looking for something you can never find?
  7. Good point kayakbird. But it sounds like the surface mark cannot be reset due to the map that was built directly over the underground mark. I suppose in this instance, I would agree with removing the mark from the boulder and displaying it somewhere else. Maybe they could put a little info sign near the map telling the history of the MAG disk that used to reside there?
  8. Can you post the pictures at all? Or at least tell us what is written on the disks?
  9. Don't worry LSUFan, I never noticed the box either! Guess we'll have to split that bottle of meds
  10. Even though nobody has logged it as destroyed, at least 5 people have found the correct mark. You gotta give them props for that.
  11. Back on topic for me too There are a few LSC rods on bridges over creeks in my area that the USPSQD logged as "not found," then go on to explain that the bridges were rebuilt. Are they not considered destroyed because there is no photographic proof?
  12. The best comparison that I can come up with is geocoins. A person has one and shows it off to a bunch of people, then tells them they can be found in caches. (While not telling them about how to log them.) The people newly acquainted with geocoins now take and keep the coins whenever they find them. But it's okay, because there are more people interested in geocoins now. I know it's not quite the same, but being taught to do something wrong is never a good thing. Especially when the bad practice is propagated. Geocaching is largely a word of mouth game/sport/whatever. If people start going around saying that you don't have to pay attention to what the datasheet says for benchmarks, it could spiral out of control in fairly short order. Again, just my two cents. *breathe* *stretch* All is well. I can't stop it from happening, so I'll just have to accept that it exists.
  13. The BM has no reference to the PID on it. The owner has to be telling them or have it on an info card. If the PID wasn't shared, the benchmark couldn't be logged, simple as that. Obviously the people 'recovering' the disk would not even be able to do a nearest benchmark search. IDK, this just really bothers me for some reason.
  14. Wow, those people really don't get the point of a benchmark. It's great that it might get them interested in recovering them too, but I'm afraid it would lead to more people taking them as trophies. It would have made more sense for the current owner of the mark to make it a discover only travel bug.
  15. I've been finding a lot of GPS benchmark disks. Most of them are from 1999 and 2000. Today I found one from 1993. It got me wondering when the first ones were monumented. Anybody know?
  16. No need to contact the locals, DaveD already helped me on this one! Here's a copy of what he found for those that are interested:
  17. Couldn't have said it better myself DaveD!
  18. Missed the deadline to reserve some, so I'll definitely have to keep my eyes peeled for when these go on sale! I'd love to have a few.
  19. Very informative article. Thanks for sharing it!
  20. I keep a similar log for my personal reference too. I go as far to add the last previously recovered date reported to NGS. That way I can see how many marks I've found, when and what type they are. The only thing I don't have are the links, but that sounds like a good idea. I might just have to implement that
  21. Did you mark the coordinates? You can do a search on the NGS site that will bring up all marks in a certain radius.
  22. I looked on the new bridge first. That would have been pretty obvious. When I talked with NorthWes and he vividly remembers it being near the old bridge.
  23. Utility Pole...now that makes sense! I knew it stood for something I just shot NorthWes a message. We've been chatting back and forth. I'm sure he'll drop in (these will be the first pictures of the area he's seen!) And thanks for that illustration of an abutment. That actually does clear a few things up for me....still don't see where it would be in the pictures though Note --Just added a fourth picture. It shows the opposite side of the bridge, but a pretty good shot of what it looks like underneath. Is it possible that it's actually submerged right now? We have had some pretty good rains here recently that raised a lot of the waterways.
  24. Yup, I noticed the cross. Kind of made me curious, but nobody to ask about it 20.8 feet from the center puts it at about the point of the scuff mark in the grass on the third photo. As for the "1.5 FT. NORTH OF U.P. NO.68," if I remember correctly, that is a power pole designation. Alas, there are no power poles remaining in the area any more (the highway was moved East and now this is part of the driveway to a golf course.)
  25. I'm pretty familiar with what a bridge abutment looks like on the newer highway bridges, but the mark I'm looking for is on the abutment of an old stone bridge. I've looked all over and even used a metal detector (which is newish to me so I'm not the best at using it yet!) I took some photos of the location to see if any of you seasoned vets could point me in the right direction: The station I'm looking for is: OM0547. I've been in touch with the previous finder and he seems like he remembers the site pretty well. He didn't have a chance to take any pictures, but he remembers that he didn't have to dig (only scrape a little with an improvised tool -- an old license plate!)
