+Danie Viljoen Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Cacher name length: The following graph shows the distribution of the name length of all cachers who have logged a cache in South Africa: The shortest cacher name is: x (1 character) The longest cacher name is: bcrockcrawler, xstitcher, & BMXer (33 characters) The average length is 9.5 characters and the median is 9 characters.
+Danie Viljoen Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Cache name length: The following graph shows the distribution of the length of South African cache names. The name length varies from 1 character: ? to 50 characters (the maximum allowed length): THE BIGGEST TREE IN SOUTH AFRICA - AND 5 CHAMPIONS. The average length is 17.7 characters and the median is 16 characters.
+Danie Viljoen Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Log length: The following graph shows the distribution of (find) log lengths on South African caches. The average log length is 110 characters. The median log length is 75 characters. The peak log length is 4 (probably "TFTC"). It is interesting - there is a (weak) correlation between a cacher's total number of finds and his average log length - the more finds, the longer the logs. (One character longer for every extra 9 finds!)

It is interesting - there is a (weak) correlation between a cacher's total number of finds and his average log length - the more finds, the longer the logs. (One character longer for every extra 9 finds!) Hmm, thats a strange observation. I would have thought that the more caches one does in a period - (eg, lots of caches in one day), the less you would write, as it might be harder to remember specifics about the caches, whereas if you just went and found 1 epic cache in a day, you would remember the experience better and have more to say about it.

What are lots of caches? Five? 10? I would certainly think we can recall all the caches we visited if it is a handful. Probably a different story if one finds 50+ caches in a day... I think the graph should be interpreted that the longer a cacher remains active, the more "obliged" they might feel to write up a worthy log as opposed to the number of find per day. Although there is probably a correlation between number of total find vs. average daily finds... Having said that... Some time ago we found 106 caches in one day in Bloemfontein (mostly Oom Louwtjie's caches). I took a photo of each cache & location in order to write a proper log for each find. For me the length of the log I write is a reward for the effort a cache owner has put in to create a cache. Would it be possible to graph favourite points vs. log length?

I think what you will find happening is people do a lot of copy paste logs with very high word counts to keep their words per log up for badgegen.

For the same reason a number of cachers also have very long "signatures" in their logs.
+Danie Viljoen Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 there is a (weak) correlation between a cacher's total number of finds and his average log length - the more finds, the longer the logs. (One character longer for every extra 9 finds!) I think it is a combination of two reasons: Firstly, the cachers with lots of finds (hundreds/thousands) will be enthusiastic about their hobby and will know from experience how important it is to write a proper log. And yes, copy & paste logs have an effect, especially with power series.

+TechnoNut Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Heading towards 2000 caches in KZN - watch this space KZN: 1999 Danie Maybe I am being a bit of a purist, or maybe even splitting hairs Although event type caches are "active" - two in that total are past events which have not yet been archived, and five are future events, which "cannot be found (yet)" In addition, these will eventually have a guaranteed disappearance from the caching map, which is why I like to exclude them from the total of active caches. So my take is that we should exclude event type caches from the active total. In which case, KZN has 1992 findable caches at this point in time. Just my 2c
