Danie Viljoen
Possible to do similar for favourite points? Favourite points are unfortunately not included in the Pocket Queries, so the only way I know to get them is to enter them manually. Given the large number of caches with FPs, this is not practical. If somebody has figured out another way, (maybe via the API?) please let me know! Link to comment
TechnoNut
Possible to do similar for favourite points? If somebody has figured out another way, (maybe via the API?) please let me know! Danie: In GSAK, set a filter of the caches you want to update (e.g. SA_All), then use the API call 'Refresh Cache Data'. In the subsequent dialog box, choose the 'Light' option. This is very quick, and you can run 10 000 per day - so it will do all of the active caches in SA. This 'Light' option refreshes the cache page info and FPs, but does not fetch any logs. +Danie Viljoen
Geographical distribution of finds per cache: Somebody once asked about the number of finds for rural vs. city caches. At that stage I could not think of an effective way to visualize the numbers. In my opinion the following two maps give an interesting answer to this question. The first shows the geographical distribution of the total number of finds per cache, and the second map shows the relative number of finds during the past 12 months. What surprised me was that the highest find rates (red) are not concentrated in the cities OR in the rural areas - but along the busy national routes! Especially the N1 from Gauteng to Cape Town, and the N3 between Gauteng and Durban. The second map also clearly shows the areas with below average find rates (blue): Eastern Cape (Transkei area), the northern part of Limpopo, and of course the big hole in the Northern Cape where there are no caches at all (white). (And I am not talking about Kimberley!) Edited September 13, 2013 by Danie Viljoen Link to comment

Danie Viljoen
How many of the GPS caches have survived and are still active? Temporarily disabled would not count in this. A bonus would be the find ratio on them - are they still being hunted or not? Of the original 655 Gauteng Power Series caches, 536 are still findable (82%). The series has recently been extended by a further 31 new caches. The total number of finds on the original series is 42110 (plus 359 on the extension). This represents 8% of all the finds in South Africa over all time. The total number of finds on the original series during the last 12 months is 14327 (plus 359 on the extension). That gives us an average of 24 finds/cache during the last 12 months (11 finds/cache for the extension). This is slightly above the average for the area (22). So yes, the Gauteng Power Series appears to be as popular as ever! Link to comment

Hesamati
Fascinating - thanks Danie! The interesting interpretations of favourite point stats is great and underlines its complex nature. E.g. the likelihood of a favourite point for a large cache of course also indirectly says something about where it's placed - something along the line of "caches aren't great because they are large, they are large because they are great"... +Danie Viljoen
Favourite points vs. Difficulty & Terrain: What this graph means is that a cache with a Difficulty rating of 5 could be expected to have 7 favourite points, compared to 1 FP for a cache with D=1. I was surprised to see the strong correlation between Difficulty (or Terrain) and the number of Favourite points given; it seems that we are masochists - we reward our own suffering! Link to comment
Hesamati
Suspect both the above have more to do with numbers than nature. I.e. low number of letterbox vs traditional. Think you'll see significantly different patterns when you look at FP / nr of finds for most of the above. Link to comment
Danie Viljoen
Suspect both the above have more to do with numbers than nature. I.e. low number of letterbox vs traditional. Think you'll see significantly different patterns when you look at FP / nr of finds for most of the above. Let's see: I am not sure if I follow your argument, but the number of finds per FP for a Letterbox is about a quarter of the number of finds per FP for a Traditional, which in my opinion agrees with the original graph - for some reason Letterboxes appear to be about four times as popular as the Traditionals which they resemble. I think the reason is quite simple - by their nature Letterboxes are normally a decent size. There are actually a disproportionate number of Large containers among them, and only one micro. And as we have seen yesterday, larger sizes are definitely favoured. So I think it is more a matter of size than anything else. Link to comment

Danie Viljoen
Finds vs. Favourite Points: Does having favourite points cause more cachers to visit a cache? It turns out it does, but not as much as I would have expected: The average number of finds for a South African cache without any FPs is 42, and this number stays roughly constant up to 6 FPs. Only then does it begin to rise, at a rate of about 3 extra finds for each additional FP. This means that a cache has to be in the top 7% (of FPs) before the effect of the FPs becomes noticable. (It may be more complex than this; I may be confusing cause with effect - it is possible that more finds lead to more FPs.) Link to comment

CapeDoc
Hi I am wanting to approach Table Mountain National Parks again. It has been about a year since I approached them last. They have not given me an official reply since last year Oct. It may be usefull to have some statistics for them, to help see that geocaching is a minor risk to the Park. Would it be possible to assist? Number of caches in peninsula reserves? Total number of finds on those caches? Ave number of finds per cache per year in last year? Most found cache (excluding TMTB hotel and Table Tope Trove) in the last year? Least found cache in last year? Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance! Link to comment
