Statistics - bend it anyway you like!

Would it be possible to give some statistic on Cachers compared to the number of municipalities in SA. This I think should rather be a badge than the number of provinces.

I am not sure I understand what you ask. Is it not answered in my message of 2 March, titled: Most municipalities found?

Most finds per province:

As requested, the highest percentage finds per province. (I calculated this using the number of available caches for each cacher. In other words, I ignored archived caches and I subtracted a cacher's own caches from the available number.) The headings are Cacher, Finds, Own caches, Percentage found.

I checked - my grand total for Natal is 911, which is the same as on the website. For eThekwini I have 365 available (and temporary unavailable) caches and 128 archived caches. I agree with your 18 hides, but I have only 289 finds on active eThekwini caches for you. My last update was last Thursday - maybe your numbers have changed since then?

I just checked again. Since last Thursday I have 1 Durban and 7 Pmb area finds.

My finds last Thursday was 548 total. Checked in GSAK and in StatsGen.

My full figures (and Durban details are as per current database, one new Durban cache placed since Thursday.)

Durban (Found, Not found, Temp Disabled, Hidden, Total) : 303 57 36 18 = 378.

Of these, there are 14 found which are now archived (including 7 archived events)

Cache size distribution:

Container RSA World

Micro: 29.1% 36.9%

Small: 40.9% 31.0%

Regular: 20.3% 24.7%

Not chosen: 5.0% 4.0%

Other: 3.4% 2.4%

Large: 0.9% 0.6%

Virtual: 0.3% 0.4%

According to this we have 8% fewer micros than the rest of the world, 10% more smalls, and 4% fewer regulars. (Whether we classify our sizes correctly is another question. Large, for example, should be in the order of 20 liter - most of those I have seen are barely Regular. Many of our Smalls should in my opinion be Micro.)

It is interesting to note that the percentage of micros is growing in South Africa - for the last 12 months the distribution was Micro: 37% (8% more), Small: 42% (about the same) and Regular: 10% (10% less).

Most social cachers:

A total of 563 different cachers have attended at least one event in Africa.

During the past 12 months, 318 cachers have attended at least one event. This is 6% of the total number of cachers who have found anything during the past 12 months. (Maybe this is of interest to the organizers of the Mega event?)

Average cacher age:

I came across the following interesting statistic: Based on a recent survey done by Groundspeak, the average geocacher age is 38 and a large percentage have children between 6-12 years old.

I wonder how we compare in South Africa? My guess is that our average age is probably higher, but I base this on the large number of grey (or no) hair I see at Gauteng events. Seeing that only about 6% of cachers attend events, I can be very wrong.

The median number of finds (worldwide) for cachers who have logged a find during the previous 3 months, is 34.

GSAK Databases - What is the best structure?

I have been using GSAK for about 8 months now and have got to the point where I need to have a look at the way I structure the databases I use.

Currently I have a "default" database which contains everything in SA and neigbouring countries, plus Zambia.

Then I have a "RestOfAfrica" for all the other African countries, including islands around Africa. Both of these databases are updated at least weekly via a set of PQs. KZN and my placed caches are updated at least daily.

Once a week I weed out unfound archived caches and move these to a separate database. Also weekly I copy my finds, my hides and my FTFs to separate databases. While this works currently, I am beginning to see that this is not ideal, especially with the 'default' database, as I need to get pretty far down page 2 to see my closest unfound cache.

So, the question is: What is the best way of structuring the GSAK databases to manage your caching most effectively?

I have one big database for the whole of Africa, including archived caches, my placed caches and my found caches. I found that this makes it very easy to keep everything updated. I have saved filters (searches) on GSAK for closest unfound caches, placed caches, found caches, etc.

What is the best way of structuring the GSAK databases to manage your caching most effectively

I prefer to keep everything in one main database which is continually updated through a series of PQ. I then have other databases that come and go into which I might load a "caches along a route" PQ simply because this is easier and when I've done that trip, I'll delete it because those same caches are usually already in the main database anyway, or I'll move them to the main database.

The main trick with using GSAK, are the filters. With everything it can do, filters are still probably its most powerful feature and its as well to get a handle on at least the basics of this. Each time I do a search for something that I think I might use again, I save it and over time I've built up a list of filters that make it very easy to manipulate a single database.

Of course, another reason for having everything in one database is so you can generate stats with some something like the FindStats macro. If thats something you want to do.

I agree. One Database for everything is the way to go.

Create filters and save them.

As new data arrives, they will be included in your filter.

So you can have a filter for:

All SA - Unfound

All SA

My hides

Bloemfontein.

....etc.

As you select the saved filter from the combo box drop down, you will see only the relevant caches.

BTW .. on the GSAK forum they are talking about 2Gig + databases that some people are using.

My "All SA + Logs" database is only .... drum roll ... 110 Meg big.

As it happened, in the last week I am also adding in all the southern Africa countries in.

My suggestion:

One database, saved filters, and if you really want, write macros to set each of the "important" filters, and asign the macros to a keaboard shortcut or function key.

Eg. ctrl-alt-F brings up your Finds filter.

I try to keep up with more or less all the active caches in the world. Unlike Africa, for which I collect all logs, I only sample the rest of the world every few months, for comparative statistical purposes. The size of my whole world database is 4.7GB, but this causes GSAK to be so impossibly slow that I have split it in 3: Africa (120MB), USA (2.1GB) and rest of the world (2.5GB).

Eg. ctrl-alt-F brings up your Finds filter.

That seems like a long keyboard shortcut, considering you can just double click the yellow box in the status bar at the bottom to set a "my finds" filter. Double click the white box for Not Found, red for Archived/Unavailable and green for Owned.

Another useful list I use all the time is location. These can be added through the option and over time, as with the filters, I've built up quite list of Towns, Suburbs, parks etc. so that if I'm going to that place I can quickly centre my database on that area, limit the radius, cache type etc with a filter and send it out to my phone and GPS all at the touch of a few buttons.

Danie - thanks for all the great stats that you supply. A point of correction though. By my calculations [and you can verify on my profile pages] I have 15 unique EC finds in South Africa in 5 different provinces. I also have 5 EC hides in 3 different provinces. Perhaps your macro needs a little fine tuning. :unsure:

Thanks for pointing that out. I have the correct number of finds and provinces for you, but only one hide. The problem was that your name appears as "cincol & Carbon Hunter" for 4 of your hides, and my script counted this as a separate person. This will be fixed if I use OwnerName in stead of PlacedBy.

Great - that is because we often "cross reference" with each other for EC data and descriptions and hence acknowledge each other's contributions.
