besem Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 Some of the following caches may not be active any more - it is hard to keep up to date with archived (and newly published) caches. I have my doubts about the actual age of the first cache on the list - its code does not correspond with its placed date. The oldest surviving South African cache (bottom of the list) comes in at number 176. 74 of the oldest 100 surviving caches are in the USA. Rank Code Name Country Placed Date 1 GC1HTTN Daylight Saving Time Machine United States 2000-05-03 63 GCKXM5 HAJ 4: zero-nine-left Germany 2000-10-24 64 GCKXM6 HAJ 2: two-seven-left Germany 2000-10-24 65 GCKXM8 HAJ 3: two-seven-right Germany 2000-10-24 77 GC1F11 Sydney Geocache Relocated! I don't think one can really trust the "placed date", since it's editable by the user, and you can select any date you wish, or it could be wrong by accident (e.g. for my own PopCo I reused an old cache page I created but never published, and forgot to alter the placed date - it was wrong for several weeks before I fixed it). Is there a way to compile a similar list by "Published date"?
+Carbon Hunter Posted August 9, 2010 Author Posted August 9, 2010 Good point - I also noticed that yesterday when reading - but did not put pen to paper. They must have been "resurrected" caches - or converted from another caching game possibly?

+Jors Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 Is there a way to compile a similar list by "Published date"? The only way to know when a cache was published, is by the date of the published log, however, that type of log only came into use much later than the first caches. What I'm trying to say that most (or all) of the old caches does not have a published log, and thus is of no help.

Obviously cachers with a low number of finds could probably top this, but say for anyone with over 300 finds? I have a finds to placement ratio of 671:182 [3.68] but that is attributed to not having caches to find around here. 80% of my finds are found in other countries when I am on holiday. When I arrived here there were only 8 caches in the country so I set about hiding caches - we now have over 200 of which I have found all of those that are not mine! Well done Paddawan - a great achievement in an area where there are also 100's to find. I look forward to finding some of yours when I am next in the Western Cape.

+Danie Viljoen Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 [what happened in KZN & Eastern Cape between August and December - both their totals have dropped? Were many of the new caches archived? Also - can you indicate the breakdown of the 421 archived caches per provine too? The two messages refer to two different periods - the first one was for the year September 2009 to August 2010, and the second one for January 2010 to December 2010. Remember, the numbers only show NEW caches published in that period, not the total number over all time. So it is quite possible for some provinces to show a drop, even without taking the archiving of caches into account. Unfortunately I can not give you the breakdown of the archived caches; I only have the total and I can not think of an easy way to do it.

+Gr8Scot Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 I was explaining geocaching to a friend the other day and he asked me how many active geocachers there were in SA and what the breakdown per province is. I've no idea how one defines a cacher as "active". Maybe someone who has logged a find or placed a cache in the last three months? Is it possible to get such statistics?
+Louise_Gerhard Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 Danie, maybe I can help with the question on the archived caches. Unfortunately GSAK is at home and I am work. I do keep a list of the archived caches in a separate database. I have a database called Default for any caches not found by me which is updated every Friday. If a cache is not updated during this period I then run a check on the status of the specific cache. Normally it returns as an archived cache. I then move them to the archived cache database. If no one else responded then I will run a query on this archived database per province for year 2010. Gerhard
