Want something interesting while caching?

Recommended Posts

Here I am a Charter Member of Geocaching.com, and for the first time today I visited Waymarking.com. This is a section that GC.com created to satisfy the fans of virtual caches. Now I’ve never been a fan of virtual caches, so Waymarking has always been under my radar. After visiting the site I came away impressed. So impressed that I will list my first waymark tomorrow.

There were several things that appealed to me personally.

1. The categories are vast.

2. It kind of reminds me of old days were caches carried you to different interesting places.

3. Because I'm physically limited these give me an opportunity to participate.

4. There is something for everyone.

5. I can do this on a regular cache hunt.

Are you a fan of old barns? Historical markers? The civil war? The revolutionary war? Historical buildings? Etc... Then there is a waymark for you.

Anyways I’m excited about this! I'm sure it’s been discussed before…but like I said…I'm excited. These can be easily found while out on a regular cache hunt.

I’m so excited I’m going to give a El Diablo Hiking Staff to the first person that can create, and get approved a new category to the already over 700 categories that exist. The first person that emails me with a confirmation that their new category was approved will get the staff.

As a note. This thread is about the possibility of using Waymarking as a supplement while caching. It's not about the old virtual caches. Please do me a favor and stay on topic.

It was refreshing to read some enthusiasm for a change, I to have not really put much thought into visiting that site but after your post I just might have to as I know from geocaching there are a lot of historic places in the area.

Great thread, thanks for sharing.

What took you so long? :)

Actually I was in your boat until recently. When I was laid up over the winter and couldn't do much caching, I got into Waymarking and now I'm about to achieve the third level (75 waymarks).

Now I won't leave the house without my camera and GPS in case I run into a subject for an existing category. Like geocachers who can't pass a hollow tree without thinking that it might be a good spot for a cache, I can't pass an interesting object without wondering if it's an existing Waymarking category. Often I find out that it is and go back to take pics and coords so I can list it.

Just out of curiosity, can you run PQ's from Waymarking.com? That would really be cool!

The fact that you can't is my chief disappointment with the site. I'm hoping that it is an upcoming enhancement.

I have found one of the three withen 100kms of home.

My intention is to create(?) some but never seem to get round to it.

I would love it if they should up in my numbers as then when I check online it would match what I have in my folder, not a big deal at the moment with it being only one different.

I guess I could just work out how to past my Waymarking profile box thing on my geocaching profile page.

While I would love to win one of your hiking staffs :) , I already have some categories and have some in the planning stages, and so would rather let someone else have the joy of creating and owning a new category. I'm glad to see that you're excited and will have a lot of fun with this in the future. ;)

I checked out Waymarking when I first started caching and wasn't overly impressed... entries like a generic downtown main street, or an old-style McDonalds really didn't seem very interesting. But at the time I was more focused on the little box at the end.

But the way you're describing it makes it sound almost like a modified version of "Locationless" caching. They're called "Categories" instead of "Locationless Caches"... I may have to check it out again.

I believe that was always the intent. It might have taken awhile to get there.

I've always liked the idea but didn't like the navigation and search. But it's been a few years, I ought to check it out again (not gunning for the staff, though; I've got some. :) ).

Welcome!!

Be very careful you may find that #5 on your list will change around and it will be what cache can I fit into my Waymarking. :) I stumbled into Waymarking a couple years ago when I had some time to kill and I guess I got hooked. I got hooked for the reasons you listed (except #5 as I have "retired" from that and #3 but it is great that Waymarking has many categories which people who are physically limited can participate in). I too was never a fan locationless and virtual caches (though I several virtual cache finds) however Waymarking has evolved into something different from both (similar yet different but then geocaching has evolved too).

As mentioned earlier in the thread, currently there are not pocket queries. However, with a shift of mindset, my approach to this is to visit the things that interest me. If there is a waymark already for that location post a visit to the existing waymark, if not submit it as a waymark for others to visit. If there is not a category it will fit in and there is broad enough interest create a new category.

In Waymarking there are several types of people that participate, those that waymark occasionally while caching; there are those that are "gridders" and want to get a waymark in as many categories possible; there are "specialists", those that concentrate in a couple categories.... All are welcome.

I am not any of those types but I am still welcome :)

As a person approaching 5000 waymarks in over 575 of those categories and also approaching a thousand in one of his favorite categories (National Register of Historic Places)... I warn you... it can be addicting and enjoyable. ;)

I get most excited when I find an object that can be a 2 fer, meaning that it can be listed in 2 waymark categories. A few weeks ago I got my first 3 fer. It was a 100 year old Catholic church with a cemetery next to it. I listed it under Catholic Churches, Old Churches and Churchyards. I could have also listed it under stained glass, but forgot to take a pic of the windows. One day I'll go back and make it a four fer.

Welcome to the world of Waymarking. As XopherN71 mentioned, it's nice to see a thread in support of Waymarking. There really is something there for everyone, and if not, one could always try to create a category. I think those that mention it's all just McD's and uninteresting things just haven't probed deeply enough. :)

Not to take this thread off topic ... but Brian you could also list the cemetery in the worldwide cemetery category... and from the looks of things that could also be a country church. (being the oldest Catholic church in NJ could also put it in the superlatives too)

Now back on topic.. just another way people enjoy Waymarking along with caching.

I just submitted my first waymark! :) Now I'm waiting anxiously for approval. It's under the category of "Barns" I love old barns and I'm fortunate enough to have an old tobacco packhouse barn that sits on my property. It's at least 50 years old, but probably closer to 100.

As soon as it gets approved (I'm hoping) I'll post a link and everyone can come log it, or visit it as called over there.

Looks like a nice barn, and a good write-up in the description. It's great that it's on your property so you could provide some first hand information. Now I just need to find an excuse to get down that way to visit. :)

Wow, I love labyrinths and it turns out there's one just up the road from where I work. I'll definitely explore the site some more.

As a member of the labyrinth group, I can say we really enjoy getting more labyrinth waymarks... so get out there and get it :)

Sorry, I meant that there's one I didn't know about until looking at the Waymarking site today. I plan to go have a look-see.

I did pass one on the way home from an event several years ago, and that doesn't seem to be listed. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to locate it again. :D

WOW! I hit the waymark section when I first started caching almost 2 yrs ago but didnt really think to much about it til today as I was reading this. I have now spent the last 3 hours browsing the site & trying to get a handle on just what all it takes etc.

I have my 1st question as Im not sure of the clarity or lack there of in this area.

Can I list a waymark alone?

I like this idea & have several places I think would be good locations but I am kinda hung up on this 'group' thing. Maybe I need to take a break. thanks MW

Your waymark has to be in a category. If you have an interesting object you want to waymark, chances are there already is a category that it would fit in. If not you can start a category for it and get it approved.

If you need help figuring out what category to put your waymarks feel free to ask over in the Waymarking forums or email an active waymarker. There are several of us that have a good understanding of the all categories and can usually recommend a category or two or more for your waymark. I do recommend asking about what category before jumping in and trying to start a new category only to find out that there is already an appropriate category.
