The foolishness continued..

Well - we had a great little cache all set up to go for some April Foolishess but unfortunately the actions of TPTB and their particularly officious approach to cache approval has caused us to decide it is just not worth the hassle any more. We already made one set of changes to try and accomodate their request but apparently that wasn't enough - we're far too busy to deal with all this. I doubt we shall be setting any more caches in the future.

Sorry - PM us if you want to join us for a drink in the pub on Tuesday night to commiserate (PM only since, heavens above, it would not be appropriate to actually name a commercial establishment here  ).

Could always just 'publish' the coordinates privately, and forget about the smiley.

Your cache reviewer provided you the same mandatory disclaimer language that I'm required to provide in similar situations in my review territory. In *every* case, the cache owner has readily agreed to add the warning text for the downloadable file.

Far from being "foolish," your cache reviewer is simply doing their job. Is there some reason why you feel yourself deserving of special treatment? Why should you not have to follow the same procedures that Groundspeak asks us to apply to everyone else?

I disagree with the subtitle of your thread.

sure are alot of good cachers leaving lately..

Shame. The April fools day event was one of the great yearly events that I looked forward to every year.

Oh well, I guess I can just go grab the 70 new parking lot micros in my area instead... what.. fun?

I too have quit putting out caches. I don't need the grief that our local reviewer seems to revel in.

The demise of the April Fool's Event truly is a loss for the geocaching community. It was the single event that I looked forward to every year. The creativity and fun was great.

The subtitle of the thread refers to the fact that the thread owner had an annual April Fool's event/caching challenge that was the envy of the GTA,.

They already stated there would be no event,

http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...p;#entry3355290

Why is everyone jumping on the reviewers for the demise of the event, the issue was a guideline issue that is clearly stated for everyone. Please keep this thread in line with the forum guidelines or it will be closed. Thank you.

While we stated there would be no event cache we never said there would be no physical cache associated with April 1st 2008.

Anyway, in an effort to turn this into something positive we have reluctantly complied with the request and resubmitted the cache. It remains to be seen if this will be satisfactory.

I suggest no futher postings are made to this thread until we see how that turns out.

please do not think that tequila speaks for everyone :)

I know its not the reviewers fault that the guidelines seem to be designed to turn all geocaches into grey wordless and meaningless numbers. I think you guys just have to hear us vent since nothing seems to be getting done through "official" channels

I have to admit that I’ve scaled back my caching activities over the last couple of years. The reasons for this have been primarily due to the proliferation of s***ty cache hides and the “micro management” of new hides and events. I’ve always proposed the 20 minute rule where any cache find will take you at least this amount of time to find. Whether that time is spent solving a puzzle or getting to the cache location is not important. This alone would almost entirely eliminate all the waste of time caches. Truth be told I’ve never been a fan of what I call the secret society of geocache approvers. I’m currently evaluating two other ‘cache sites now.

Cheers!

Why can people just not follow the guidelines and stop complaining? :)

It must be miserable being a reviewer. Everyone trying to stretch the rules and then complainingwhen they don't get their way.....

Reviewers can make their own lives more or less miserable depending on how they treat their clients. We are clients. Not Joes, Not Marks, Not Perps.

As for stretching the rules there are two ways to do that. One by being creative and placing caches that you think people will like. That's a good thing and a good way to stretch the rules. Then there is pushing the rules just to see them bend and break and make reviewers squirm, because that's the real fun. That's the bad way. Your paint it as all bad. It's not. Thats life and reality and a reviewer needs to know the difference. Some do. Some don't.

Then you ask that people who spend their time and energy on their caches that they want people to enjoy to not be annoyed when a perfectly viable cache is not approved? You ask too much. This activity is built on cache owners hard work placing caches. Those owners take pride in their caches, they take pride in their work. Even if the cache falls short on some community standard or a guideline they are still vested in that cache as their own creation. You would do well to recognize that, that's often the root of the 'complaints' and even if the complaint isn't a good one, they are still vested in that cache as their own hard work.

The simpler answer to your question. That's human nature. :D

Please don't *** out a portion of a word to pass the forum filters, this is the same as using the word.

Foul Language and obscene images will not be tolerated. This site is family friendly, and all posts and posters must respect the integrity of the site.

It still violates this portion of the forum guidelines, I don't want to see it. Thank you.

Sure creativity is a good thing.

HOWEVER, that still does not give someone the right to COMPLAIN about it when their creative idea does not get approved. Coming to to a public forum and complaining about hard working volunteers is not a nice thing to do.

Of all the forums that I frequent, this one just has to have the most understanding mods. :)

Nowhere else (family friendly) can you use derogatory nuances and not be handed a time out.

Oops! Back to the original topic........ Guidelines, rules, whatever, are a fact that you acknowledged when you decided to post an event. The reviewers are not at fault for enforcing what they have been told to enforce.

I see by your post that you have decided to comply with your reviewer and resubmit. That, in itself, shows the mature side that is contained in a good geocacher.

What, only 70? Sounds like your area has some catching up to do.

Don't worry, no one is leaving. It's just an April fools joke. I think.

Per the guidelines taking your case to the forums is a reccomended practice. You can complain about it if you must.

Geofellas never actually mentions the reviewer, and now that his april fools day cache is actually published it makes sense :)

Reviewers will also often tell people that if they don't like something, take it to the forums. Forums since Roman times have been a place where people can express their discontent, and I for one am grateful that the reviewers are much more tollerant of dissent then the Roman Prefecture

Hm...

...and next week on the Soap Opera. :)

I for one am satisfied with how things are run here. Rules are rules. Sure maybe things were a little more slack a couple years ago, but things change. I'm pretty sure the rules are in place so that Groundspeak as a company has a method of covering their arse. I don't see the need for all the drama... As long as rules are followed, caches get published and we can all do what we originally came here to do. GEOCACHE.

So - a cache was published, a whole bunch of people found it and joined us at the pub for some good socialising - fun was had by all. A big thank you to all who played the game, but especially to our reviewer CacheDrone who rose above all the flak and showed that he has a good sense of humour. "Laughter is the best medicine" they say. I think "they" are right :(

What can we do next year

Why does everone dislike IRS Agents when they come calling? Being the messenger for bad news is not the must fun you can have.
Because Geocaching shouldn't be "taxing" on my enjoyment of the outdoor experience? :D

Check my "joined" date. The hobby now isn't as good as it used to be for the reasons I outlined above. This is really a shame. Its also avoidable.
It must be miserable being a reviewer.
More likely an obsequious ego-cum-power-trip under the masquerade of anonymity, by my reckoning. :)
Everyone trying to stretch the rules and then complainingwhen they don't get their way.....
The rules seem to be somewhat of a moving target, depending upon whom you deal with.
Please don't *** out a portion of a word to pass the forum filters, this is the same as using the word.

I didn't. The asterisks were entirely automatic. Shame on me for using the word "shifty". Hey, it worked that time. :D

Oh brother...

Yes, but at issue is the rules, and the interpretation thereof, resulting in a less-than-satisfying Geoexperience.

In any event, I must get out and do some 'caching to blow off some steam. Did I say "event"? Um, can I get an approval first? :D
