Sorry if I missed it in this thread, but is there a direct link to upload data? I cannot attach a file through the board emailer app, so if you want to message me, Moun10Bike, I can reply to that mail with the .gpx file.

 

Its just a small set of trails in a nature park in Abbotsford, B.C. collected with a Colorado, on 4 separate occasions, manually averaged in mapsource.

Current update is now in DeLorme format at http://www.totemlake.org/downloads.htm .

 

I didn't convert the waypoints and shapes this time but they are still in text format for download at the same location.

Thanks for posting these! I've been using the text format so I can adjust the appearance of the trails in Street Atlas to my liking.

 

And also thanks to all involved in the Northwest Trails Project. These maps are priceless.

Northwest Trails v1.37 is now available on the Northwest Trails Page. There is some good stuff in this version: most of the roads and a large portion of the trails in the Pilchuck Tree Farm near Stanwood, WA; most of the road and trail network between Dishman Hills and Iller Creek Conservation Area near Spokane, WA; and complete coverage of Dash Point State Park in Federal Way, WA. All this plus additional submissions from around the Northwest including Washington, British Columbia, Idaho and Oregon.

Go, Jester! I noticed last year that NWT had very little data from the South Sound area. I hadn't managed to get back down there, so glad he's on the case! ;)

Thanks! It's one of the things that has helped me lose 70+ pounds in the last year. I started off with a light 12-15 pound lumbar pack and have increased to a 55 pound pack, which I hardly notice now when I'm wearing it (with it, I'm still lighter than I was a year ago!). Because of this, I'm in the best shape I've been since my teens (maybe even better).

 

I'm getting as bad about trails as I used to be about cache sites. Now as I drive by woods I'm looking for trails to map, not places to hide caches... Of course, I do have a couple of ideas for cache hides - one on a trail I've mapped, but NOT sent to Jon ... yet! I've found a couple of places in Federal Way that I need to check out - which can be dangerous, sometimes what looks like a simple trail or two ends up with many miles of trail (such as Maplewood Park in the Renton Highlands).

 

It's been a lot of fun, and now when people are (hopefully using the maps) hiding new caches around here, I have a easy time finding them (either I remember the trails, or I'm following the map). And big thanks go to Jon for starting and keeping this project going!

I love hearing the positive stories that have come out of this project! :laughing:

 

I wanted to mention something that I forgot to regarding the Pilchuck Tree Farm data in version 1.37. That data came from a PDF and shapefiles that in turn had come from GPS data. However, the data had been massaged at some point in the past and did not line up with the aerial and road imagery I have - some places were accurate, others were shifted by as much as 250 feet or so. The roads should all be accurate now as I adjusted them to match the aerial imagery; the trails do not show up in the trees the same way, so I had to adjust those based on the roads around them. The short story is that the trails could be off by a significant amount; accurate GPS data for them and everything else is (as always) needed and appreciated!

This brings back fond memories. I made several trips to hike at Palouse Falls while in college, and we would roll large rocks off the cliff next to the falls, probably breaking some laws and certainly endangering our lives...

It looks like there's data-gathering to be done in the new Paradise Valley Conservation Area. The current NW Trails data for this area doesn't seem to bear much resemblance to the newly published trail map. This area opened to the public sometime in the last week, and there are already two geocaches, a terracache and a series of letterboxes in place. I'm hoping to get to explore it some this weekend, if I can shake my plague.

I'm way ahead of you - it's already done and loaded on my GPS! :anicute: Of course, the data I've added is all taken from a rectified image of the PDF (which says right on it that the data is not accurate), so there is still a lot of data-gathering with GPS to be done!

:laughing: Currently, MAC Version, of Garmin BaseCamp Beta is not compatible with NW Trails.

 

BaseCamp only works with maps that include digital elevation model (DEM) data.

Just wondering if anyone else is having a problem upload the Trails Map from MapInstall. The regions that it highlights for me are WAY OFF.... can't figure it out.

I just installed Mapinstall to check it out and it is working perfectly for me. What version of Northwest Trails and Mapinstall are you running? Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling?

I am running MapInstall 3.13.1 and NW_Trails 1.39. MapInstall is only allowing me to select the eastern half of WA and OR, all of ID (except for the panhandle), western MT, nearly all of WY, and the very southern part of AK. I have e-mailed you a screenshot of what it allows me to select.

 

I am going to revert back to 3.12.1 on MapInstall and see if it helps me any.

 

**EDIT**: Nope, still won't let me select the entire state... bummer

I don't see 3.13.1 available on the Garmin site. Could you post a link to it? The only version I can find is 3.12.1 with no mention of a beta anywhere.

 

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Northwest Trails?

 

Also, could you tell me what operating system you are using?

3.13.1 is not available to the public yet. It is only available when you install the TOPO 24K Northwest DVD. It is not a beta, either.

 

I use Windows Vista Ultimate edition.

 

I was able to load NW_Trails 1.39 using MapSource, but MapInstall still only allowed me limited selection.

 

I have it installed, so no worries.

Garmin MapInstall Special version 3.13.1

 

(Update not available from Garmin's website, but inlcuded in 2010 maps)

Northwest Trails v1.40 has been posted!

 

Memorial Day arrives here in the states on Monday, and based on the number of submissions that I have received for the Northwest Trails Project in recent days, it looks like I'm not the only one itching for this traditional start of summer to arrive! It's as though people are dusting off their old tracks and waypoints in anticipation of getting out and enjoying them in the woods. Lots of data came in from new and familiar faces alike in the past couple of weeks and I can only hope that the trend continues; nothing makes me happier than seeing new or updated trails popping up on the maps and in the GPS!

 

Now, if only we could get more involvement from people outside of Washington State! It is the only state represented in updates this version, which is a trend I hope won't continue. Any ideas on how to get people from Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, et al. excited about this project? Please post any suggestions or ideas you may have.

Hey all,

 

I've finally gotten around to moving Switchbacks.com to a new web host and in the process have moved my blog to the site so it is a little better integrated (http://www.switchbacks.com/blog). The big change, however, is the introduction of a completely new feature - a user forum! I'm hoping that people will like using it for discussions of maps, GPS mapsets, and everything else. Come on over and have a look around (and maybe start a thread or two, as things are a little bare right now! :blink:).

 

With this change I will no longer be posting map and site updates here (but will continue monitoring the thread for questions, etc.).

That is a code that removes the trailing words/characters when zoomed out. So, for example, "Tiger Mountain Trail" will appear as "Tiger Mountain" when you are zoomed out and labels start conflicting. It helps to reduce clutter.

 

My question is where are you seeing this? The code should not appear on the GPS or in Mapsource unless I goofed somewhere. (You will, of course, see the label if you are extracting the data directly from the image files in the mapset.)

Elsewhere in this thread you describe how to extract the trails to MP files via GPSMapEdit. Those MP text files show the ~[0x1f] and I was curious. However, one does not append road, then why append trail? Cannot the line type show trail.

 

Since I have your attention, indulge me a few more questions, since your experience exceeds mine via an order of magnitude.

 

Tracklog filtering? I like to use Mapsource because I can see the underlying map. The filtering options are many: time, distance, auto, etc. I've found I can delete at least 75% of the points from the track and not affect the look. What filtering have you found you like best?

 

Some of your "trails" have route or primitive, again from the MP file. How do these differ from ordinary trails?

I append road as well. I'm sure that there are some that I have missed along the way, though.

I do not filter the data I include in Northwest Trails (short of deleting obviously stray points, places where the line crosses over itself, etc.).

You are seeing data that is automatically attributed to data by cGPSmapper based on line type. It is used to classify roads and trails for routing (assigning speeds, etc.). I do not use it in Northwest Trails.

Had you considered doing something at Geowoodstock when it's in the Seattle area next year? Maybe a talk or some kind of a presentation/booth about the NW Trails project? Maybe some people from Montana, Wyoming, etc who are unfamiliar with the project will come to Geowoodstock and this can be used as a way to get the word out? If you decide to do something like this, I would be happy to help.

Great idea to have a presentation on NW Trails. There was a series of sessions on various topics at this year's GW (e.g., Twitter, GSAK, Wherigo). Maybe it would encourage similar projects in other areas of the country, as well.

The submission form saves all of the details entered into the form in a file accompanying the upload, and it also generates an automatic email notification to me so that I know there is new data available.

 

Let me know if you run into any problems or have any suggestions!

Jon, I imagine it's often a trade-off between what's easiest for users and what's easiest for you when submitting and processing tracks. I encourage you choose what is easiest for you (like you have done on the gpx vs gdb issue) rather than always cater what's easiest for the submitters of tracks. Hopefully that way the work you take on will not become too much for you to handle and you will therefore continue to update the map sets. I can't tell you how useful they are every time I hit the hills.

The big reason for adding this change was the fact that people not familiar with the project did not know how to send in data. The email thing just wasn't apparent. In addition, the use of the form helps to automate some of the things I was doing manually (naming conventions, for example) and to limit the file types I was getting, which were starting to expand.

 

That said, I don't want to do anything that discourages people from submitting data. I don't feel like we are quite at the point of critical mass where I can demand too much! :)
