  1. CORRECTION!!!! We accidentally posted the wrong year and date for the above hike. This is for the 2015 hike prior to the Going APE Mega event on August 16th. For some reason we are unable to edit our previous post.
  2. Like last year, we are leading a hike to one of the oldest existing caches, GCD, before driving the short distance over to the Going APE 2014 mega-event on August 17th! To accommodate the timing of WSGA's Ape event, we will start the hike very early in the morning. We'll meet up at 6AM with a hike time of 6:30AM sharp. Parking and the trail starts here: GC1GMZN - Mt. Margaret Trail Head - N 47° 21.841 W 121° 21.475 There are more caches in the area but we are hiking as a group to GCD only. If you wish to look for other caches in the area, we will not be doing them as a group as most people will want to get over to the Ape Event. Please come prepared to walk a minimum of four miles (roundtrip) AND a little over 1600 feet of elevation gain. Some items you may want to bring are: sturdy hiking boats, extra water, basic first aid kit, and some trail snacks. PLEASE be aware that this hike is not meant for everybody! You will be hiking uphill for 1-2 hours straight. Know your limitations! Also, you will need a NW Forest pass to park at the Mt. Margaret Trail Head. You can buy these passes: Online: http://www.fs.usda.gov/main/r6/passes-permits Please remember that you need to allow enough time for the pass to be mailed to you. OR….. Pay Station Available - Can purchase up to three NWFP Day Passes with VISA or Master Card. We hope to see lots of people there. Last year we had about 40 people go on this hike!
  3. Ok, the one I mentioned on South Sister is the highest physical container but it's the end of a multi that starts much lower. Looks like the Steens one is the highest if you only look at starting coords in a multi. Yeah, depends on definition of highest cache I guess. That multi is interesting, though. We don't have something like that in WA. It really throws a monkey wrench into the definition of "highest cache."
  4. Does anyone know what Oregon's highest cache is? I found this one: http://coord.info/GCXK3C This is a multi with the final on top of South Sister which is Oregon's 3rd highest peak. Anyone know of a cache higher than this one?

  6. The dirt road is quite good, passable for any car. It's a well-traveled road and popular trailhead. We hiked up to GCD a week ago. While the road is passable by any car, right now there are some large pot-holes to be avoided by cars with low clearance. If you drive slowly and avoid the pot-holes, you should be okay.
  7. Since Staci hasn't responded yet, I'll chime in. A lot depends on how fast you hike, but if the group leaves by 7:00, you should be done by 10:00 or so. I recall the hikers getting to the Ape event last year around 11:00. A few earlier (speed demons). Staci will never chime in. It's a forum. Our group leaves at 6:30AM not 7AM. Last year most got back by 9:30-10AM. But it all depends on individual speed and how long everyone wants to spend standing around shooting the breeze!

 GCD Hike 2013

  9. It was a great hike and we ALL made it to GCD! Thank you for joining us, everyone. Here is a pic of most of us.
  10. We'll meet up at 6AM with a hike time of 6:30am. We are really excited to see you all Sunday morning!!!! GrnXnham
  11. Just a reminder that this is Sunday! We hope to have a great turnout for the hike up. The more people you can talk with the faster/easier the hike will seem to be! Also, going early in the morning the weather will be cooler and easier to deal with than having the afternoon sun directly hitting the majority of the trail. Also, we don't want you to miss any of the wonderful APE event. Please come prepared to walk a minimum of four miles (roundtrip) AND a little over 1600 feet of elevation. Some essentials you may want to bring are: sturdy hiking boots, several bottles of water, basic First Aid kit, extra hiking socks (non-cotton,) and a snack. PLEASE remember that you will need a NW Forest pass to park at the Mt. Margaret Trail Head. See you Sunday! GrnXnham
  12. A Northwest Forest Pass is required to park at the trailhead. They are $5 for day passes, and available in many local shops or online. PLEASE remember that you will need a NW Forest pass to park at the Mt. Margaret Trail Head. 13. Have you ever wanted to visit the oldest cache in Washington? If so …. Come join us! We are hiking to GCD on August 18, 2013, before heading over to the infamous Ape Event! To accommodate the timing of WSGA's Ape event on Snoqualime Pass we will be starting very early in the morning. We'll meet up at 6AM with a hike time of 6:30. The trail starts at GC1GMZN - Mt. Margaret Trail Head N 47° 22.1076' W 121° 21.1112' On the way you can find: GC2F9DV - 56 Miles and 4 Days GC1W7KE - I've fallen, and I can't get up.... Arriving at: GCD – Geocache Of course there are more caches in the area, but these mentioned caches are on the trail from the parking lot to GCD. (We will be turning around here, but you may feel free to continue on.) Please come prepared to walk a minimum of four miles (roundtrip) AND a little over 1600 feet of elevation gain. Some essentials you may want to bring are: sturdy hiking boats, several bottles of water, basic First Aid kit, extra hiking socks (non-cotton,) and a snack.
  14. This is not a new or recent problem. We've been caching for 10 years now, and this has been a problem since we've been caching.
  15. These maps have been invaluable in our geocaching experience!

What time are you looking to start this hike? BTW, nice avatar! Where did you get that pic?
  17. Premium Members are elitists. I'm not an elitist. I just don't like the idea of doing something that may be illegal. If Groundspeak knows about it and doesn't mind, I don't have a problem with it. To the OP, congratulations on getting gifted. I don't know who did it, but as others have said, pass it on somehow. Whoosh...
  18. Same problem when mounting my GPSr on a motorcycle. The vibration makes it shut off. A small dab of di-electric grease at each end of the contact points fixed the problem.
  19. I collect only wooden nickels from other cachers. So far, I have around 200 different wooden nickels collected from other cachers all across America. A few I have traded for by mail, but most I have picked up in caches where we always leave one of our wooden nickels in exchange. Unfortunately, signature items in general seems to be on the wane since we started caching in 2003. In our early years, it was common to find one or more signature items in a majority of caches that we found. Today, we find very few. It's too bad--we found some really cool signature items back then.
  20. The current mac version of communicator has fixed this problem.
  21. We plan to hike up Beckler Peak (off of HWY 2) this Sunday (8/26) This is a new trail that just opened last year. So it's well maintained and is considered a "family" hike. It sounds like there are excellent views from the top. lucyandrickie got on the stick and placed a cache up there soon after the trail opened last fall. We are finally getting around to going up there to find their cache. Since this is a fairly moderate hike, we thought we'd post on here to see if anyone else was up for a day hike this Sunday. Here is the cache: http://coord.info/GC36AC1 and the link to the Washington Trails Association description of the hike: http://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/beckler-peak We plan to be there at 9AM
  22. "Best in sunlight" is relative. You said you think your Etrex 20 is great in sunlight but it's your first GPSr. Have you ever had the chance to compare it to any other units in the sun? The eTrex 20 is manageable. I'm not going to return it or anything. It's just not as good in the sun as my other two units. All of my GPSr's are better in the sun than any other electronics with screens that I've ever owned.
  23. I got quite a chuckle out of reading this thread. If someone today was starting a new thread to talk about finding 25 caches in a day, it would be a complaint because they had an "off" day or because they only had 30 minutes of spare time for caching that day.
