Problems with owner emails from Groundspeak

Not sure if this is the appropriate place to post this, since it is not exactly a website issue.

 

I am unable to open emails from "Geocaching" (for example TB owner or watchlist). The symptoms are I try to open the email (via comcast web connection - email provider is comcast.net) and it just sits there trying to open. I have let it sit for as long as two minutes. Pocket query emails are not causing any problem. No other emails from other sources are having this problem. This appears to have started within the last week or so (possibly less).

 

Is anyone else experiencing this?

 

I have tried from work and home.

 

Browsers: IE7 and Firefox 2.0.0.9

OS: Windows XP on both

i'm having the same problem. it's been happening for a few days. i have comcast, too. no problems except with geocaching.com. :D

I have been experiencing the same problems with opening e-mails from geocaching.com relating to watchlists and logs, notes, etc. Queries are not a problem either. I checked all of my settings and nothing has changed on my end. I even turned off the phishing filters and that hasn't helped. I did send a note to comcast.net pertaining to the problem and am awaiting a reply. This has also just happened in the last several days. If anyone gets good info on this to correct the problem please post.

I'm having the problem too, so it appears to be widespread, as least among Comcast users (which I am as well). Is anyone have the problem who isn't using Comcast?

I'm not sure, but I wonder if this problem could be related to the problem discussed in this long thread.

 

If GC.com changed the format -- finally -- perhaps something else got mixed up for comcast . . . :D

 

I am not having problems viewing the emails on gmail. The emails are also correctly formatted in Eudora now, with correct links. :D

I edited the topic title because the problem is greater than "TB Owner" e-mails. It's any owner logs sent to a Comcast e-mail account.

Sometime in the first half of October, the encoding format of owner emails changed from clean 7-bit to base64. I hate that because I can't read it with my creaky old ASCII email client. Comcast doesn't much like it either; they add this header line:

X-SpamDetect: ***: 3.717000 Gives a lame excuse about why spam was sent=0.4, From3consonants=0.3, Whole message is base64 encoded=1.0, Message text disguised using base-64 encoding=2.0

I started this as another thread and was referred to this one.

 

For the last several days we can't open messages from Geocachers who are making a log entry of one of our caches. Messages through Geocaching.com from those contacting us come through fine. The problem is computer independent and browser independent (Internet explorer 6 or 7 and Firefox) at least for the three we have tried. Comcast can't explain it and they see the same problem if they look at the messages in our account. Is anyone else having the same problem? Does anyone know what is different between the LOG messages and Contacting messages? Does anyone know of anything that changed on the servers at Geocaching.com between Wednesday and Thursday (Dec 12 & 13)? We can open the messages through another application such as Yahoo mail with their POP mail downloader from our Comcast account.

 

Maybe we can get Geocaching.com to talk with Comcast people?

I've had the problem since 12/13/07 on about 6 GC messages. I contacted Comcast help today and had an interactive discussion with them. They are aware of the problem with GC but don't know how to fix it. I was told that there was a recent Windows update that has caused problems in email applications.

with me, if it's a owner log or a watchlist log, i can't see it. if it's a contacting owner message, i can.

I to use Comcast and am having problems with GC emails. The email will arrive but when it opens nothing is on the page. Comcast has been working on my issue since mid last week without any solution in sight. GC emails are the only ones that are unable to be opened. I have not attempted to run a PQ yet but will shortly to see if this comes through or not, It appears that this could.

We noticed the same problem starting on the 13th. The email information is present only if you download on to your computer into an email program (outlook, Outlook express, etc). The problem is viewing the messages through Comcasts webmail service.

I'm having the same problem with Comcast also. Discussed the issue with Comcast on Dec. 14 and didn't get much help.

:) It is the same here in Minnesota. I too, have Comcast and using webmail only, I can't open notifications of new logs or new caches placed. I did notice, however, that another frequent email sender from another company not related to GC has also exhibited the problem. That company also sends notifications of a different sort. There have been no error notifications, it just hangs up. I hadn't talked with Comcast yet, but may now do so since it seems system-wide.

 

The only solution I have is to wait until I get home from work to read them. My boss should be happier since I should be more productive....

Thank you for the reports everyone, we are aware of the issue and looking into it. Unfortunately, the person who is best equipped to investigate this problem - Elias - is AFK For the Holidays.

 

I would not suggest you abandon comcast email forever, but it might be a good idea to temporarily switch to a free gmail or hotmail account until we have this problem sorted out. I'm very sorry for the trouble.

I am now in a Live Chat with Comcast. I think everyone should do the same so that they will start to understand that it is not just an isolated problem.

I am having the same problem when attempting to view GC.com email on Comcast via the web (using Windows XP and IE). However, these same emails when downloaded to my home computer (a Mac), are readable with Mail application.

Ditto everyone else - Comcast user... started middle of last week. Regular emails seem to be fine, but NOTICES/WATCH LISTS/BOOKMARKS are blank.

 

I've been clicking on the box (not opening the emails) and hitting the 'forward' button. This is taking many minutes, but the email will open up... the links are gone, but the addresses and information is there.

 

Funny, I checked the forums last week, and didn't find any one complaining - so I thought it was just little old me.

Oh Yeah... I also called Comcast yesterday... no help... didn't know what to do, gave me a ticket number to escalate the issue.

 

waiting... waiting.... waiting.....

 

(Klossner - thanks for that info - I don't know what it means... but I'm sure it's helpful to someone. Sorry to say, I'm kind of glad you are having problems with the rest of us (besides slowing you down <_< ) we've got a top notch 'geek' :blink::huh: on our side. I almost emailed you the other day for any helpful hints or suggestions. R)

I also had several conversations with comcast. Coincidentally, a fiber optic cable was cut over the weekend in the St. Paul, MN area so I let the problem rest for a couple of days. I have an open trouble ticket with comcast from Monday (yesterday) after trying some of the usual mods for security settings, etc.

Could this have antything to do with the recent change to the subject line:

 

It used to be as follows up to about a week ago:

[GEO] Copy of email to WeatherednBoston‏

 

Now it's:

[GEO] Copy of email <[GEO] trainlove contacting meandmydogs from Geocaching.com> to meandmydogs‏

 

I'm sure some mail handlers are going to balk at the < trying to redirect it into a backdoor or something like a buffer overflow.

No. This problem is with notices about objects for which you are the owner, not copies of email you sent.

I shouldn't think so. RFC2822 says the Subject field is unstructured.

I made the switch over to an account at gmail.com and started to receive the emails just fine. I also forwarded one of the notices to the comcast account and it came through without problem. The base64 was converted by gmail to 7 bit encoding and comcast web mail was happy. I am sticking with gmail for a while, even if it is not perfect.

As a temporary work around try m.comcast.net

I have done that and it is working fine when I open it with m.comcast.net. I will continue to use the mobile login until or if whenever Comcast and Geocaching.com are able to fix this. Thanks for the workaround hint

Comcast used my E-mail account yesterday to test the problem....but the problem has not been fixed yet. I just tested it and I can not open up a LOG E-Mail with comcast.net.

 

Will also continue to use use m.comcast.net until the issue is resolved completely.

I have comcast, and have been having the same problem. It has been about two weeks, but today I tried it and an Owner log E-mail worked. So I think they got it fixed. You guys should try and see if yours works.

I just tested it and it worked.....popped up right away. Maybe it really is fixed!

I just got an owner email for a TB and could read it just fine via the comcast web interface. :)

 

Looks like maybe now it is only an intermittent problem.

I tested some previous emails this morning, and they now open fine. I haven't received any new ones... so keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm still not getting my PQs or anything from Groundspeak through comcast.

 

Beware if you change your email address for your profile they send you a validation email and those did not work when I got them, then I was locked out of my account. I had to call up GS to get validated again.

Last week my GC emails on Comcast.net took 10 to 12 mins to open. I moved my profile email to AOL and everything works fine there. Today I tried Comcast again and my validation email took 20 minutes to recieve. I've returned to having my GC emails go to AOL. When the problems are resolved I'll be back. Cache On! ^

Having the same problem and also have Comcast. PQ are not arriving or if they do arrive they arrive hours/days later.

Today I tried Comcast again and my validation email took 20 minutes to recieve. I've returned to having my GC emails go to AOL. When the problems are resolved I'll be back. Cache On! ^

Maybe AOL is better now, but quite a while ago, they were guilty of throttling emails from Groundspeak. B) I know of more than one person who dumped AOL and got a new ISP because they were so disgusted with the poor email service . . . I think a Gmail account is the most reliable alternative.

I just called Comcast about the PQ throttling. The guy I spoke to claims no throttling is taking place of the IP addresses I could supply (from PQs that have actually arrived.) I have PQs from before Christmas that have never arrived and tried one three hours ago to my Comcast address that has not arrived. Switching to gmail, my PQ arrived within seconds of the run time posted on the PQ page.

There's no point. Comcast will lie on the phone even to an ISP. My ISP was looking at their mail logs with the "rejected as spam" responses from Comcast's SMTP server while the rep on the phone swore that this had never happened.

 

It's a hassle to do, but switching to another mail provider like gmail will relieve a lot of future pain.

Then perhaps all of us having issues should call Comcast and see if we can be more of a market force.
