60cs Problem

Recommended Posts

I just tried it and mine does not shut off.

However, I know I've had mine shut off from some combination of button presses on the rocker switch before, and I think it was on the altimeter page then, too. I just tried mashing the rocker every which way, and couldn't get it to shut off, so I can't seem to repeat it. Perhaps this could be the "loose battery contacts" issue?

I also have no doubt that Garmin will provide a solution if there was a problem with the first batch.

For example, the glue which attaches the rubber to my Vista started dissolving more than two years after purchase, thus completely out of warranty. When I asked Garmin how much a repair was, they asked me to send in the unit and within 3 days I got a brand-new Vista in return - for free.

Yep! mine does the same thing. I have to hit the rocker button a few times , but it does it. The screen just fades out, and the unit shuts off. E-mail being sent to

Garmin now!

Good. let me know what garmin says. Hopefully this is one of those things that can be fixed with an update, and not sending it back to Garmin.

I had the same problem. I'll have to give them a call.

My 60CS just arrived. It took a while to initialize as it thought that it was Feb 29th. I had to get it to start a new search so it could get the right date and access the right almanac data but I digress...

I went to the altimeter page and hit right arrow, and it shut down - TWICE! It fades and then off.

Got my 60CS yesterday and did my first 2 caches today. Very fun! I almost got a Legend at Christmas time, but I'm glad I waited. Autorouting works great.

It did crash on me once today when I was using the rocker button on the map page. I can't get it to crash any more, though. I happened to be plugged into external power at the time, so that probably rules out the battery spring being the culprit.

I just got my 60CS, the first thing I tried after getting a satalite lock was to see if I could recreate this bug. I have crashed twice so far, but not on the altimeter page, and only with the GPS off. 1st time was while scrolling around on the map, the second time was just flipping through pages using the "page" key.

Ok, I've been able to reproduce th crash reliably now. If I turn teh unit on, and right away start pressing the Page key, it crashes every time trying to move off of the compas page and onto the next. I found another post that says pressing Up, Right,Down,Left on the trip computer opens a debugging window. I tried it and it works, there are a lot of "Abnormal Shutdows", and "RTL Traps" listed, along with what looks like Regsiter and stack dumps.

OK....I think I'll wait till the first firmware update to get a 60CS. :D My current units never crash. I don't need to spend $400+ for a semi-buggy GPS.

So far so good with my unit I have had no crashes. I am curretly running Metroguide USA version 5. I will install City Select latter after I play with it awhile. I wonder if there are conflicts between the 60CS and City Select causeing some of the problems here posted?

I'm using MetroGuide USA 5 also. I've eliminated teh crashing altogether by removing the Altimeter page from the page rotation in setup. I havn't crashed once since I did this. It's a temporary bandaid over the problem (i didn't pay an extar $100 for an altimeter to not be able to use it). Other then the altimeter page crashing the unit works flawlesly for me. It fits better in my hand then my Vista, and the screen is easier to read, plus map transfer over USB is soo much faster. The CS also picks up a satalite lock in about 25 seconds, and can even get a reading inside my apartment building. Once the software bugs are worked out it's going to be a wonderfull GPSr.

Here's the reply from Garmin about our problem:

Chris,

I am sorry that you are having a problem with the 60CS. There has been a small amount of units that power off when using the rocker key on the altimeter page. This only happens when the unit has no recorded track log. If the unit has recorded a track log you can customize and navigate the altimeter page. Please check our website for potential fixes addressing this issue. If you have any additional questions please feel free to contact our product support team at the phone numbers listed below or reply to this email.

Best regards;

That debug page is interesting. According to mine, I've had 7 abnormal shutdowns. Sounds about right -- where I've had to shut down the unit when it locked up in the middle of something. While that is a lot, it hasn't really phased me. I've used it quite a bit in the car and hiking and am pleased with how well it has worked, maintaining signals and tracking even while hiking through valleys in Shenandoah. I have City Navigator (from a 2610) and 24k Topo East maps installed.

I figure most or all of the bugs will be fixed soon enough. If I've had 7 crashes in a week of use, I can't believe s/w testers wouldn't come across the same things just as quickly. In the meantime, I'm happy with mine.

I got my 60CS today and sure enough, it does the same thing. Garmin says it doesn't do it after you've saved a track? I walked around the neighborhood and saved the track. It still does it. It will power off if I hit left or right arrow the first time going into the Altimiter page after being on another page. Doesn't do it hitting up or down. And once you've hit up or down, you can hit left and right all you want and no power down.

What mapsource software do you have on your unit if any? I can't get mine to do that no matter what I do. I turn the unit on without a saved track, Press the page button a few times to get the the ALT page and hit right or left first. Nothing happens it just changes the scale. What plot mode do you have the ALT page set to?

I haven't installed any maps yet. Just the basemap it comes with.

I was playing with it some more and noticed it only does it if you hit left or right before it draws the elevation profile. It takes a small moment before it displays it and if you hit left or right before then.. poof!

I suspect that's why they say if you don't have a track yet it happens.. because it never displays the profile. But even if you have a track and are able to hit the arrows before it draws the profile, you can kill it.

I just fired off a message to tech support basically telling them the same thing.

( Garmin Tech Support Form )

Couldn't hurt for you to contact them too. I think their "happens to a small number of units" line is wishfull thinking!

(although thinking about it, maybe it's related to what elevation you're at. I'm at 2400 ft, what about you?)

My 60CS has a problem. Started a few days ago, the buttons wouldn't respond, then they would, then they wouldn't. Then not at all anymore. So I email tech support and the tell me how to reset the unit, but I can';t use the buttons to reset it!

So I ended up sending it back today. Has anyone ever dealt with there service dept? Are they good, fast, etc? I mean I got caches to find!
