John Grisham Racketeer Trackable

I was doing some cleaning and found my John Grisham Racketeer Trackable that resembles a gold ingot. It's not activated and sealed in the original plastic wrap. It had a limited release during a promotion ten years ago.

Anyone know if it has any collectable value ?

I've moved this thread from the General Geocaching Topics forum.

As a reminder, in this promotion the recipients of the trackables were asked to place them in geocaches.  The trackables could be activated and owned by the recipients.

It's difficult to activate a coin if misplaced. Interesting information that may make this sealed trackable even more rare.

Not sure why it would.  Promotion trackables we've seen were to be placed in a geocache within a certain timeframe of receiving it.

Those interested would see it's a promotion trackable, so maybe if you find someone who doesn't care it could be...  :)

I've had one of these circulating for over a decade. I feel fortunate that the last log I got on it was a DISCOVER in a California cache on 10/31/23.

Sometimes I wish I'd kept this, but it WAS a promotional TB, so I was obligated to release it.

490 logs and over 33,000 miles traveled later, maybe I'll put a mission on it to make its way home......

It would be cool to discover that one on its way around the world!

I discovered one in the wilds that eventually went from Georgia to California, another one at two Events.  After 2 years of travelling, it was beginning to show some rust, but it still looked pretty cool.

I hope you are able to bring it home! That would be a cool item to have!

Through a series of "fortunate" events, I  will be able to return this to its owner very soon - and it is in absolutely pristine condition - amazing!!

Photo attached, and yes, it IS the same TB released by TeamRabbit Run....awesome story of how it came into my hand!

Here's an Update, Campers!

CaVinoGal & RattleSnack did indeed hold their New York event as promised on June 14th, and the Team Cap'n & I were thrilled to make the eighty-or-so mile trip.  See Caching at the Winery

We all had a great time at this great venue. I'm happy to say that the original THE RACKETEER Geocoin Travel Bug, with almost 50,000 miles on it is now safe and sound on a shelf and it's proxy, expertly crafted by MCL1080, CaVinoGal's son is ready to jump into its first cache to continue Dad's adventures.

Click the TB's link above ( or HERE ) to see pictures of the original AND the new proxy.

Here, at the bottom of this post is a picture of the hand-off. I'm the one on the left.

SO many thanks to CaVinoGal for her above-and-beyond effort to engineer this, from recognizing the opportunity to managing the retrieval from the field (along with @toycruiser), to holding this serendipitously-timed event on her cross-country trip.

It's a good story, from her side. Sue, anything to add?

With all the stories of travel bugs gone missing, disappearing, never to be seen again, it was gratifying and so much fun to be a part of this story with a very positive outcome!

Mission accomplished, and it only took 6 months!  The cache in California wasn't too far from me, and the trackable was retrieved by a geocaching friend (amazingly!) about 2 weeks after TRR's December post.  I contacted her, we met at an event in February and she handed The Racketeer off to me. In June, I traveled with it to NY, met TRR at my event and completed the hand off!

The beautiful coin I am holding in the photo is a gift/thank you from TRR to me - I plan to keep the original with me and send a proxy out to travel!  https://coord.info/TB8TMQN

Interestingly, on this same trip, RattleSnack also returned a travel bug to it's owner after it had been to the Netherlands and back.  Two great stories of TB's finding their way home!!
