+creadman
This would be an interesting project. Many of us go places such as hotels, restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, campgrounds, schools, etc. How about a new addition to the site where people can submit business location using an estimate/actual GPS coordinates near the entrance or parking area. Why do we want to do this? It's a good way for people who doesn't lived in this area to find a point of interest (POI), such as McDonald's, Subway, Pizza Hut, or get a location of a specific hotel in their GPS. Perhaps suggesting these business owners/website developers to add the GPS in the location for travellers. This can be another search feature to find a nearest POI. Have a drop down menu selecting what kind of business....such as Hotel/Motel (another drop down or type in name of restaurant) Gas Station Airport Restaurant (another drop down or type in name of restaurant) Schools (Elementary, Middle, High School, etc) Public Parks Zoo and many more Quote Link to comment
knowschad
It already exists. Its called "Waymarking" At least, I think that's what you are talking about. Quote Link to comment

knowschad
I am not a "waymarker" myself, so I have a question about it for those that are... is there an equivilent to our Pocket Queries that would allow you to, say, download the coordinates for an entire category or group? Quote Link to comment

Many of us travel and don't know where most of these places located. You need to eat sometimes, or refuel Petrol/Gas, and other places they need to go before/after geocaching. Not everyone goes geo caching, but hopefully this might help inspire them to join in the sports. Quote Link to comment
+the family bu
my sat nav gives me directions to POI - is that not the same thing? Quote Link to comment
+buttaskotch
That would violate the no commercial guidelines. Besides what you are suggesting is that other Groundspeak project called "Waymarking" I tried it a bit at the beginning and got quickly board with it. Besides, if I want a nearby gas station or some place to eat its easy enough to go to the POI on the GPS and find something close by. But liking the way you think and it would be a good suggestion otherwise! Welcome to the game! Quote Link to comment
+Panther&Pine
This feels like Gowalla + POIs. Probably not something that Groundspeak is going to get into. Quote Link to comment
+orion X
I would venture to say that at least 89% of that is in my POI's in my trusty ole Garmin 60. Everything else is on Waymarking.com as knowschad has suggested. Edit for spelling Edited August 19, 2010 by orion X Quote Link to comment
+The Cheeseheads
I'll assume from your request that if you're traveling, you already have a means to look up this information, i.e. a smartphone. I can't speak to other platforms, but the iPhone has many apps available for looking up POIs near your current location. Quote Link to comment

Nope. That's one of the major issues with Waymarking. Besides that, there is no real great way to weed through the nearly 1000 categories of waymarks. There is a search or you can work your way through the hierarchical link structure. Quote Link to comment
+roziecakes
I get POIs from my Garmin Nuvi. Quote Link to comment

As someone else mentioned, social media apps like Gowalla provide these kinds of points of interest (POIs). Waymarking.com would also provide waypoints for all of these POIs (hmmm, anyone heard talk of a Waymarking mobile app?) If you have a Garmin GPS most models support their City Navigator product and granted it's not free (and not inexpensive) it also includes a detailed basemap of roads along with thousands of points of interest. It really depends on what kind of device you're using. If you have a smart phone there are lots of navigation apps that have this kind of information (including Google Earth). If you have a handheld or auto navigation GPS there are additional products you can buy which contain the information that you're looking for. If you're looking for waypoints for a specific area sometimes just a google search for that area along with the waypoints keyword will reveal a collection of waypoints others have captured. For example, when I went to Rome a few years ago I found a site which had a GPX file that included every metro/bus stop in the city. Quote Link to comment
Clan Riffster
Or Groundspeak could just bring back Virtual caches, sans any "Wow" factor. If the recent power trail silliness is any indication, I'm sure your problems would be solved. Quote Link to comment
+sTeamTraen
It already exists. Its called "Waymarking" At least, I think that's what you are talking about. From what I can make out, it already exists, but it's called Google Maps. Quote Link to comment
