Premium member caches

Quite a few of the PM caches that are published, are done so for only a period of time. They are later changed to an any-member cache.

Reasons for this vary quite a bit.

One of the more prevalent reasons is to help entice others to become PM, thereby aiding in monetary support to the site. Presumably, you cannot log the FTF (not entirely true) unless you are PM.

Another reason is that the cache may be on (personal) private property of the CO, and they desire only PM at the cache site, rather than marauding hoards of everyone.

Those are only a sampling of reasons -- am sure there are of other reasons, too. :P

I am going to wade in deep on this one and wait for the inane comments to be hurtled at me from the far corners of PMerhood. BTW and for those you who may be concerned for my safety, I am wearing my personal floatation device and I do have my puncture repair kit handy for any leaks that may occur. OOOPPPSSS, too late...SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

Some folks think it makes their cache safer from cache maggots.

NOT True! "Cache Maggots" come in all Types, Shapes, Sizes and Membership Levels.

Others think they are promoting support for GC.com.

GC promotes itself through advertising fees from various businesses, along with the products they convince you to buy.

Some like to see the audit logs. Some do it just because they can.

Could it be a way of "spying" and/or "harrassing" fellow cachers? Or, maybe it just gives you the feeling of control?

And even if you don't have a premium membership there are lots of caches to find that aren't PM only.

That is so very true! And, even if the cache is limited to Premium Members, you can still log them through: Boulter's Express Logger website.

I seem to recall Jeremy Irish making the following public statement in one of the forums:

"I, Jeremy Irish, CEO of Grounded, Inc. will never make this a pay to play web site for Geocaching. It is in the best interest of all players that the game remain free and the non-commercial sharing of these coordinates through the web site."

"Not that I'm planning for anything, but in the case that there was some sort of gambling cache (who knows, weirder stuff has happened), I suppose that would be in essence a "pay to play" cache. But the traditional game will remain purely free."

"How's that?"

"Jeremy"

======== END OF QUOTE ========

If I ever become a PM, it will be for the extra functions attributed to the use of a PDA and other simular devices and/or programs. Furthermore, I will never "segregate" any of my caches, so that only a select group of cachers can or cannot find them!

I see 'em either way. And even if you don't have a premium membership there are lots of caches to find that aren't PM only.

All of my caches are PM because I like the Audit Log. That, and it drives a couple of local cachers nuts. :P

I suspect it was originally created to in order to add perceived value to the Premium Membership.

I don't think it makes the cache any safer. There are lots of ways for non-PM's to find out the cache details.

Ok, now I have to ask, what an Audit log is...? Sorry, but I haven't talked about this before. :P

It is a list of which cachers have visited your cache page, when and how many times. However, there are lots of ways to get the details without it showing on the Audit Log. For Example, a Pocket Query does not show up in the Audit Log.

I own two. They are in locations where I wish to keep the traffic down a little more than my other cache placements. This is one way to do that.

May I ask which locations? Or let's say: why do you want to keep the traffic low?

To minimize the exposure of the cache. They are in very public locations.

cyber stalking tool used to see who has even viewed your cache listing.

my introduction to it came when someone mentioned a cache listing (as a cool cache) and i checked out the listing. the next morning i got an email from the CO asking me why i was browsing their listing (as I am 1500 miles away).

hehe.

What? You're saying it's not true that some people think it makes their caches safer? I say that a LOT of people think it makes their caches safer.

The cache pirates, as you yourself said, come in various membership levels. Just because a pirate CAN pay for a PM, and just because SOME of them do, doesn't mean that making a cache a PMO Cache won't help keep it safe from the pirates that don't pay for the PM.

As I remember the history, cache pirates were the original reason that the PMO Cache option was created. It helps sometimes.

I've read several people's post about similar emails, and almost always they're upset about it, or have gotten all bent out of shape that someone asked them. I guess it has to do with your personality and how you view most things in life.

In my mind, I see the cache owner being excited about a PMO cache they've hidden and have either just found the Audit Log or they're just watching it closely out of curiosity. They see all the locals looking at the cache, some looking at it a lot maybe, and then they notice a cache name they don't recognize, so they check out the stranger's profile.

"Hey neat-o! A cacher from 1,500 miles away is looking at my cache. I wonder how they heard about it? Maybe it was mentioned in the forums, or a friend of theirs told them about it, or perhaps this person just likes looking at cache pages from all over. I think I'll email them and ask."

So they email you to satisfy their curiosity, and because they're excited that their new cache is getting some attention from far away. I've read how some of these emails are replied to with an email blasting them for even asking.

It's a bad assumption to make, that the cache owner asking you why you're looking is doing so because they're upset about it, or cyber stalking, or anything else negative. It's probably a much safer assumption to make, that they're excited about you looking at their cache, but they're just curious how you heard about their cache in order to want to look.

they weren't negative in the email, but they were very curious why someone so far away would be interested in their cache (it is a night-time cache). they volunteered to escort us....actually, in the cache listing they said they'd be happy to escort anyone who wanted a little moral support.

"cyber stalking" was only used in the loosest of ways. i'm wondering how many locals they email trying to garner visits. night-time caches don't seem to be too popular around here....although there are plenty of people here that go out at night to do caching.
