Jason and Jack Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 Any one else hit this wall and what did you do until you got your GPS. I went to 9 today and found 1. I think I just won't go until I get a GPS. And yes I know its meant to be done with a GPS. Quote
M.TEX Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 ok I you found Caches without GPS , that is very good for you ... If you no longer can find because you don't have GPS...so you must buy one to get even better rates. I have been out to search for 10 in one day and I got just 1 or 2....So the problem is that I need to search better , and always read CLUES and take good directions to the cache before you get on the road.... So , you're not alone....Gedt a GPS and enjoy ! M.TEX Quote

+Bear and Ragged Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 20 without a GPS? That's good going! I think the wall is still there with a GPS... Just gotta persevere! Quote
daveindeal Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 I manage 12 before i got a GPS. I still have no handheld but upgraded my contract and got a blackberry which i am still using today, my contract is due an upgrade in about 3 months and am planning on getting a HTC Desire and using an adroid app. Quote

+Juicepig Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 befriend and offer to drive a GPS-holding geocacher. When they get out of the car and run into the bush FOLLOW! If they ask you to stop following, stop! simple as that Quote
+Smilin' Dawg Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 I tell new caches that they might be comfortable until they hit 300-500. Keep playing and make friends with someone else who caches. Quote
+Klatch Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 This geocacher has about 3K finds without a GPS. Quote
Jason and Jack Posted May 22, 2010 Author Posted May 22, 2010 This geocacher has about 3K finds without a GPS. God bless him... I'd quit way before that. The plethora of pine straw and dead ungroomed, LOL, palmetto is about to drive me batcrap crazy. Quote
+moose61 Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 If you have a car navigation system you might be able to switch it to ignore the roads and use the very small arrow to get close to the cache. I once found with the navigation when I did not have my GPS with me. You might even be able to load the caches as POI on the navigation system. Quote
+Proud Soccer Mom Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 If I didn't have a GPS, I'd be letterboxing. + 1 Quote
+GeoGeeBee Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 If you don't have a GPS, do you have a cellphone? Does your cellphone have a navigation function? I use the BlackStar app on my BlackBerry for caching. I did eventually buy a "real" GPS receiver, and it works better than the BlackBerry. But I still use the Blackberry a lot, especially for urban caches. For one thing, I always have the BB with me. Quote
+niraD Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 The plethora of pine straw and dead ungroomed, LOL, palmetto is about to drive me batcrap crazy. I'm confused. Is the problem your lack of a GPSr? Or is the problem that you're finding caches hidden in places you don't enjoy searching? I found hundreds without a GPSr before I finally broke down and bought one. I still don't use it for every search, although now I'm using GeoBeagle on my Nexus One most of the time, so I don't find many without any GPSr at all. Quote
Jason and Jack Posted May 28, 2010 Author Posted May 28, 2010 I want to search for the 'in the woods way out of sight of Google Earth sight' caches, but without a GPS that ramps it up a bit. Basically I'm tired of nanos hidden in lampposts. I'm SO ready to do the Difficulty 3-4s in the middle of nowhere. Quote
+silksmybaby Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 If you do not have a GPS I suggest picking up letterboxing. It is similar but there is not swag but they give you clues to follow rather than coordinates. It is actually quite fun as well. Quote
+edscott Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 I disagree. Letterboxing is following hints and clues. If you like route finding, using a satellite image, and practicing tracking skills, then GPS-less caching is a much better choice. One good thing about Letterboxing however, is that there has to be room for a stamp and ink pad. No micros. Quote
